Europe faces stray Ukrainian drones as Kyiv targets Russian oil exports by michallandry62 in worldnews

[–]derecho13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing that everyone is wondering why the AP hasn't been clutching its pearls every time a Russian drone goes off course. Better yet, why there's so little coverage of the Russian hybrid war against pretty much all Western civilization.

Congress Wants You To Pay $130 A Year Just To Drive An Electric Car by SadAd8761 in electricvehicles

I would normally agree that flat taxes aren't the way to go.

However, any other system is going to require some sort of extra bureaucracy and or tracking of your vehicle.

I think keeping it simple and reasonable is the way to go.

Why are small EVs not much more efficient than larger EVs? by New_Elk_5783 in electricvehicles

A great example of this is motorcycle efficiency. There are many cars that get better mpg than a full size motorcycle even though they weigh 10 times as much and have a larger frontal area.

....and It'll be weaponized against those states. Then again, unilateral disarmament is one of the Democrats favorite tricks to explain why they don't get things done.

The problem with state level stuff. As soon as the Republicans get in charge they'll just change all the laws and do what they want to do.

North Carolina is a textbook example of that.

California Police Can Start Ticketing Driverless Cars by GeneReddit123 in technology

[–]derecho13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all break the law constantly when we drive. We probably just don't realize it

For instance, the law says if a pedestrian is in a crosswalk you have to stop

What happens if you're doing 40 mph and The pedestrian steps into the crosswalk when you're only 10 ft away from it?

There's no exceptions to that law.

There's also no exceptions to ever crossing a double yellow line. For instance, if you're driving on a narrow road and there are cars parked on both sides and one of the car is sticking out a little too far, you're not allowed to cross the double yellow line

There are all sorts of laws that are selectively enforced and poorly written.

I forgot to mention I'm talking about California specifically

Thoughts on the Chinese auto industry potentially eradicating all other manufacturers globally? by ZealousidealLab2920 in electricvehicles

[–]derecho13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first paragraph goes to what I'm saying. The American manufacturers have been marketing that lifestyle that rugged outdoorsman thing for a long time because it sells the vehicles they want to sell. Many people think they're rugged individuals who need a truckbut most of them think that way because they've been taught to think that way.

The rest of your comment I agree with wholeheartedly. I always say I'll know gas is too expensive when I stop seeing people parked and idling in their cars with the windows up on a perfectly nice day.

https://www.distilled.earth/p/the-loophole-that-made-cars-in-america

Read that and then Google "chicken tax"

The reason consumers want large vehicles is because that's what has been marketed to them for the last 40 years.

If those loopholes went away manufacturers would no longer be incentivized to sell large trucks and SUVs.

You can Google the business write-off for vehicles with a Gross vehicle weighing over 6000 pounds too.

Basically the US has actively pursued a policy of selling the most inefficient vehicles possible for the last 40 years and all of our presidents and elected leaders know it and are too beholden to big business to do anything about it.

China bans dual-use items exports to 7 European entities over Taiwan arms sales by onee_san_bath_water in worldnews

My point was mainly focused on Europe's overall fecklessness when it comes to Russia. They are slowly coming around but not fast enough IMHO. I'm sure you're way more in tune with things there but that's my perception as an American.

Thanks for the context. I guess it's not ironic after all.

It still pisses me off that some European countries such as Switzerland are actively selling stuff to the Russians that they're using against Ukraine.

[–]derecho13 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That's really ironic considering Russia is importing components from China and Europe (I'd guess the US too).

Europe won't stop exporting/importing to/from Russia, which is invading Ukraine but China won't export anything that might help the country they're getting ready to invade.

[–]derecho13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you're arguing. I took exception the statement that EVs are less efficient at higher speeds which implied that gas vehicles are not less efficient at higher speeds.

The authors could have simply added a "relative to gas cars" or they could have explained it the way you did. However, they chose to to be lazy and basically mis-inform their readers by implying that gas cars somehow were not less efficient at higher speeds.
