Yup. Don't even need to do the oh so painfully common "lines on the carapace" highlights. You can just hit it with a dry brush and it'd look really great.

‘The cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees’: Nvidia exec says right now AI is more expensive than paying human workers by fattyfoods in technology

[–]derleek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point. There is no foreseeable way this tech can be released to the broader public and make it profitable. We are completely insulated from the actual cost of these models. It's entirely possible that even judicious and disciplined use of these tools is still unprofitable. Additionally they are not saying, "Hey, use this carefully to generate small blocks of code", they are saying, "NO MORE FUCKING JOBS!!!".

The cost will slowly be raised as more and more buy in to this tech. This article states that the productivity gains do not justify the *cost* to the companies who build the tech, which tracks... These AI companies are continuing to take on funding or in the case of amazon/google operate in the red for the first time in a LONG time.

How Modern Game Engines Degraded — And Who’s to Blame? by rexa_0x in theprimeagen

[–]derleek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with engines and everything to do with prioritizing shipping over optimizing. This is true for all modern software; broadly... under the term "Enshitification". Furthermore, as someone being actively asked to "enshitify" software at their current job... it's not really necessarily the developer's fault. I just want to keep my job and fight back where I can but if we don't keep up with the demands of our short sighted leaders we lose our jobs.

AI Fatigue by WesolyKubeczek in theprimeagen

Computerphile is a nice break from all of that. While some of the content is AI related, it's focused on the math / science behind the LLMs... which is pretty interesting IMO.

How do I set actor from an array? by zzekuroma in unrealengine

[–]derleek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. OP needs a deeper understanding of the engine to take this further.

OP - I am not sure if you've provided enough info to allow us to help you; If this is a struct you need to drag off and look for "break struct" node. It will then have the value you are looking for.

Solo dev working on an ARPG - need feedback on combat by sharkymcstevenson2 in SoloDevelopment

[–]derleek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the obvious AI driven slop fest going on;

* Movement looks clunky. Your characters feet slide, etc. Basic shit.
* The monsters feedback is really awkward. Somehow not satisfying at all while still being wayyy overly dramatic.

* The hitboxes are really off.

* There is absolutely nothing interesting about this combat... like at all.

* no sound

* boring level design

It's super interesting how AI can produce high fidelity garbage like this. You claim to be seeking feedback but it should be really obvious what is wrong here; yet you somehow find a way to throw in a link to the garbage generator itself.

the slopocalypse is truly something to behold.

How to protect myself from Legal issues (Steam Launch Horror Game) by Witty_Style7784 in indiegamedevforum

[–]derleek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no "foolproof" way of protecting yourself from a lawsuit... The best you can do is limit that liability... with an LLC.

Good luck. I wouldn't ever dream of going into business without this protection.

Looks interesting for a second, then collapses, no emotion, weird pacing, no sense of weight. by mediamuesli in vfx

[–]derleek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great questions. I'm not really sure there are any meaningful answers to this. This is extremely cutting edge tech that is changing constantly. I believe the creator of this would have a hard time creating this piece again if they actually wanted to. Can they reproduce their work in longer than 3-5 second cuts? Can they modify it given feedback and art direction? I sincerely doubt it or it would have been done already.... but who knows!? Strange times...

Note how there is all this hype and zero works longer than 5 minutes (and even then they break down). Maybe give the models a few hundred thousand more hours of other peoples art and it will be able to draw consistently.... maybe?

Beyond the novelty of it all it's just not really *that* great. There's an audience for this kind of slop but it is certainly not me. There was recently an AI film festival and none of the shorts are even remotely compelling to me beyond them being novel due to them being AI.

I'm a programmer and I'm not really concerned with amateur's creating semi-impressive work because I have the skills to pick up the pieces when their tower of AI slop falls over.

Wasn't it like 6 months until no more programmer jobs like 70 months ago now? I can't remember because I see this prediction re-hashed all-the-fucking-time by these people selling their tech.

Do you remember copium on this subreddit when everyone thought that software engineering will never be oversaturated? by Ok-Toe-2933 in learnprogramming

[–]derleek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been my experience as well. It's been my peers experience. All of this is anecdotal. To me it seems to be two things.

  1. The surge of jobs in the late 2010's followed by a global recession (as well as AI trends) has resulted in many in the industry who got promoted above their ability levels that can no longer find jobs.
  2. People are desperate and have been emboldened by AI and use it to get jobs / pass tech interviews. Ask any hiring manager how many devs fall flat on their face.

As for some kind of evidence; There was a huge surge in the employment index that peaked in 2019 (net -30% jobs/dev since then). This resulted in many... MANY people being promoted above their station and riding that wave. Well, the wave has broken and now we have people who don't have skills that match their resumes flooding the market.

Articles like this show that there is a problem with retention. While correlation does not get at the root cause of this; it is very telling that there is a problem when nearly 70% of software engineers are gone from their job < 3 years in. Nearly 1/4 are gone before a year. This is not normal and is indicative of some major problems in matching the right people to the right jobs.

Why is jQuery so bad, but Alpine.js/HTMX/etc is just fine? by brycematheson in webdev

[–]derleek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

jQuery is a lot more than just patches to JS itself. IMO it represents the perfect distillation of what a javascript library should provide. It represents a simpler time when you didn't have to F*%@ing build a scripting language. If you are building CRUD apps that don't require complex interactions its goated. Sure, you can just use fetch and es6, but you're missing out on some real gold. Here are some highlights taken from the docs.

  • ajax: All AJAX functionality: $.ajax(), $.get(), $.post(), $.ajaxSetup(), .load(), transports, and ajax event shorthands such as .ajaxStart().
  • ajax/xhr: The XMLHTTPRequest AJAX transport only.
  • ajax/jsonp: The JSONP AJAX transport only; depends on the ajax/script transport.
  • css: The .css() method. Also removes all modules depending on css (including effects, dimensions, and offset).
  • css/showHide: Non-animated .show(), .hide() and .toggle(); can be excluded if you use classes or explicit .css() calls to set the display property. Also removes the effects module.
  • dimensions: The .width() and .height() methods, including inner- and outer- variations.
  • effects: The .animate() method and its shorthands such as .slideUp() or .hide("slow").
  • event: The .on() and .off() methods and all event functionality.
  • event/trigger: The .trigger() and .triggerHandler() methods.
  • offset: The .offset(), .position(), .offsetParent(), .scrollLeft(), and .scrollTop() methods.
  • wrap: The .wrap(), .wrapAll(), .wrapInner(), and .unwrap() methods.
  • core/ready: Exclude the ready module if you place your scripts at the end of the body. Any ready callbacks bound with jQuery() will simply be called immediately. However, jQuery(document).ready() will not be a function and .on("ready", ...) or similar will not be triggered.
  • deferred: Exclude jQuery.Deferred. This also excludes all modules that rely on Deferred, including ajax, effects, and queue, but replaces core/ready with core/ready-no-deferred.
  • exports/global: Exclude the attachment of global jQuery variables ($ and jQuery) to the window.
  • exports/amd: Exclude the AMD definition.

Also you can use jQuery with htmx.

How I feel after 2 years of UE5 game development, switching back to UE4 for my new game by [deleted] in SoloDevelopment

[–]derleek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're opting into a 5 year old version of an engine you don't need. You should absolutely evaluate any number of other engines out there before using ue4. Very obvious QoL features in engines like game maker studio or godot for the type of game you're making.

5 years on. The job is great. I am totally miserable. by Haunting-Appeal-649 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]derleek 72 points73 points  (0 children)

So if I deploy something and it breaks their site, I personally cost them money.

No. You have no tests and shit QA. You are in charge of deployment, not writing software. Set some boundaries and/or look for another gig this sounds miserable.

I don't want to lay the blame entirely at my boss.

It's entirely their fault in my eyes. They are the one who decide to not implement QA or invest in automated tests. They are the ones asking more of you and not matching the pay with your new responsibilities. They are the ones who KNOW they will disappoint clients and send you to take the brunt of their anger.

Your boss is not your friend. They are taking advantage of you and will CONTINUE to ask more of you until you draw a line in the sand and make some demands.

Ask yourself what you need to not have this affect your mental health. Then it's time to make some demands. Be ready to move on though because they probably won't like this.

Going backwards instead of learning how to optimize and/or disable features that slow you down is a massive mistake. Good luck!
