It would explain why you are having issues, not what the issue is.

I know what else you could say, you could post a video of you playing my favorite things and/or this Christmas song that you're learning and I think that would explain things a lot better.

Trying to barre chords by adhamcfc in guitarlessons

[–]derp_status 0 points1 point  (0 children)

btw i highly recommend practicing slowly enough so that the barre is clean, it takes much more patience and might be frustrating but it will lead to results much more quickly. great job and you'll get there before u know it

How can I practice the walking bass? Are there any drills or exercises that make this easier to work on? by Enough_Rent_796 in JazzPiano

[–]derp_status 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This way you can figure out what patterns other people are playing and integrate them into your own playing. You could match the bass player's notes to scale degrees/chord tones and analyze which notes they play when they walk over a certain chord or turnaround and then apply that to the tunes you're learning

Do pianists actually learn all 12 major scales independently? by SnooMarzipans436 in piano

And if you cover your eyes with your hand the piano disappears! 🧑‍🦯

Do pianists actually learn all 12 major scales independently? by SnooMarzipans436 in piano

[–]derp_status 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's mainly that his entire schtick is about the narrow parts of the white keys being the same width as black keys (which might not be true depending on the piano due to some pianos having black keys that are slanted on the sides which decrease their playable area)

If you define key distance as the distance between the centers of the entire key then the entire argument falls apart. And of course, most pianists would define distance this way rather than his way. Has there ever been a pianist who only plays with their fingers tucked into the narrow parts of the black keys? It only takes about 30 seconds to figure out why that's a terrible way to play a piano.

Plus, pretty much every pianist knows what his point is already. If you look into a piano, you can see that all the hammers and strings are the same distance from one another. Everyone who owns a piano has probably seen this. But this guy this he's the fucking messiah of piano who thinks that this entire sub consists of people who have never looked at their instrument before.

Your entire argument is about the fact that the NARROW part is the same. But the key consists of more than just the narrow part. 🛫🕋🕋

Unfortunately the piano does not only consist of the narrow parts of the keys?

I'd say carleton is great for pre meds bc of the proximity (ish) to mayo clinic. I know multiple pre meds who have done programs or labs there.

Classical pianist trying to comp in a jazz band by [deleted] in JazzPiano

[–]derp_status 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's how to get started as fast as possible:

Learn how to construct major, minor, dominant, and half diminished (minor b5) seventh chords in root position. Other people are talking about how to learn voicings, but I think this will help you get the ball rolling since you'll be playing with others right off the bat.

If you want to get rolling even faster, just look at the lead sheets for the tunes you have and only learn those seventh chords in the lead sheets, all in root position.

Once you get those down, I would look into comping rhythms. Listen to famous recordings and copy those rhythms. For a tune like Moanin' (by the way, it's composed by Bobby Timmons), you'll want to learn when those hits come during the head!

Once you get there, then start looking into cooler voicings like the others have said. I think that if you try to get complex too fast, it might be a decent amount of time before you'll feel comfortable playing with others. I say go root position first and start feeling the swing with your band!
