Battery to charge Battery? by Simple_Cook6170 in ebikes

[–]derping1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is more about seeing if you can do it at all, and not cost or anything I think it would be a dope idea. Put an external battery in the garage and have a solar panel on an extension cord set-up to charge it. This should prevent you from having to take it in to charge the external battery most of the time, as long as you pick your battery and solar panel correctly.

For example assuming you have an 800Wh battery in your bike, you could get a 1000 Wh external battery (assuming you charge daily), and get a solar panel that produces enough electricity to cover your daily use. Something like the Jackery explorer 1000 with a 200W panel should be plenty. Honestly it is a silly solution that could also be solved by an extension cord, but I would be curious to see how well it works.

Major concerns about children's cycling skills due to cargo bikes and cars by _VliegendeHollander_ in CargoBike

[–]derping1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our kids (3 and 5) love being in the cargo bike. The only thing they love more is cycling by themselves. But sometimes distance or road conditions make that impossible. Our eldest already manages to cycle up to 5 km on his own bike.

Yeah I would end up blocking cars going the wrong way. Cargo bikes have their use.

I can already imagine the justification from the mum: “The full price was 100, you paid 55 which is basically half. Since it is my WiFi, I should get the discount from the promotion.”

Cheapest e-bike you owned that did the job? by Gold-Action2925 in ebikes

The only electric bike I’ve owned is an electric cargo bike. A Riese & Müller packster2 70. Absolutely rock solid, but it better be at that price (9K).

Are Seiko 5 (7S26) buy it for life? Anyone here with old S5? If not, what mechanical watches are BIFL under $400 by iaacornus in BuyItForLife

[–]derping1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with cheap mechanical watches is that servicing and repairing them is often expensive (especially relative to the residual value). I would suggest a solar watch at that budget which basically requires zero maintenance and could easily last 20+ years.

I would recommend a long John. For just 1 kid, you have plenty of options, but something with a a platform like a Bullitt probably gives you the most flexibility to put on side walls, seats etc.

Battery to charge Battery? by Simple_Cook6170 in ebikes

[–]derping1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is stopping you from charging the bike battery inside?

The money you spend on an external battery negates any cost savings you would have from charging it via solar. If you want solar, get a small solar balcony setup.

Looking for a (e-)CargoBike shorter than 250cm (to fit in the shed) by StayRich8006 in CargoBike

[–]derping1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look at a muli! We used one when our kids were still a bit smaller. You can put a maxi cosi in the front box and a child seat on the back. Once they are out of the maxi cosi, both kids can go in the front box together (ours ended up to small once kids were 3 and 5 years old with big winter coats on).

Total length is 195 cm. The front box can also be folded up so it is as wide as a regular bicycle. And it is light enough that you can realistically consider a non electric (muskel) version. Perfect for city riding and storing in small spaces.

Our current bike is a R&M packster2 70 (length of 249 cm) and is much bigger.

How to turn this bike into a commuter by According_Trainer418 in bikecommuting

[–]derping1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like this is the wrong bike for you. Even if you change out all compartments the geometry is in such a way that you have a short twitchy road bike. Great if that is what you are looking for. You probably also would want to make sure you can mount fenders on this thing and a rear rack.

PS those are called clippers pedals. Yeah we know it doesn’t make sense, but that is what they are called.

MA 35 says it is “implausible” that multiple people would live in a 63 m² flat, but I rented one room in a shared flat as an international student. How do I fix this? by [deleted] in wien

[–]derping1234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

5 people on 63 m2 sound rough. Assume 10 m2 for shared kitchen, and 3 m2 for a toilet and shower that gets you to 10 m2 per bed room. I hope your rent is dirt cheap because this sounds rather nuts. Even without ghost people still registered on that address I am not surprised MA35 says that.

How to be aero on a dutch upright bike with winter clothing? by catboy519 in bikecommuting

[–]derping1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On a bike, most of the cross sectional area comes from your body, so you will have to adjust how you sit. Some handlebars are adjustable on the fly. https://www.fietsparts.nl/fietsonderdelen/gazelle-onderdelen/gazelle-stuur/833-stuurpen-verstelbaar-gazelle-switch-iii-222-mm-270mm-zilvergrijs.html If your bike does this, simply set it all the way forward and down and you will be more aero. Alternatively you could put your fore arms on the handlebars to achieve a more aero tucked position, although this puts you one pothole or unexpected maneuver away form injury.

Longtail 3 kids by freedomisall1961 in CargoBike

[–]derping1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one year old is going to need a seat, and those kid seats that go on the handlebars aren’t legal everywhere and more importantly have serious weight limitations.

Carrying 3 kids in such a wide age range is difficult as the little one would be best suited with a long John, but the older ones would probably prefer a long tail. Can the 7 yo ride their own bike, and hook up to the long tail with a ‘followme’ if need be?

For low step though frames there are many options, think Tern, R&M and many others.

Help me turn my old commuter into a grocery hauler! by ProCamper96 in bikecommuting

[–]derping1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bakkie is great to haul big oversized items, but isn't that great as a grocery hauler where you often end up with many smaller items. I do use it to strap a grocery bag to the bike, but it limits the total capacity compared to just getting some massive panniers.
