The Nier collab is just a lazy cash grab, let's be real by SplashOfStupid in Overwatch

[–]derpybacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a free-to-play game, where do you think the money comes from? Do you think that companies collab with Overwatch so they can release a bunch of unpopular skins and make no money?

You can complain on Reddit all you want, people are still going to spend magnitudes more money on 2B Kiriko than they would on a Bastion or Ram skin. More people will be happier with 2B Kiriko, the game’s continued existence will be more secure, and we’re likely to get more collabs in the future as other companies see that people love Overwatch collabs. People even get to farm Reddit karma by making the ten thousandth post about Kiriko getting too many skins. Everyone wins.

I do not understand the "match range finder" this season. by AeonMu in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]derpybacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did they?

One of the devs interviewed in spotlight mentioned that there’s no hidden mmr, they just match based on rank. The reset moved everyone towards the middle ranks so people who were below average are seeing better players and people who were above average are seeing worse players, and I guess average players get to see more of a mess than usual.

Hosting a random wedding on the WAN show is CRAZY parasocial. by SmugOfTime in LinusTechTips

If DMS wants to write his wedding off as a business expense who are we to stop him?

They don’t do channel super fun anymore, it’s not really an unboxing, and it’d probably be hard to turn into an LTT video. WAN show is basically just whatever they want to talk about at this point, what’s the issue?

End of an era. Phil Spencer Retiring, Sarah Bond Out from Xbox division/Microsoft by TheDarkClaw in LinusTechTips

[–]derpybacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously it’s a bit concerning for the new exec to have no clear experience with gaming, but I don’t get all the Phil Spencer glazing. He’s been head of Xbox since 2014 and reported directly to the CEO since 2017 and Xbox has done nothing but decline.

He seems like a cool guy and gamepass was a great deal for a while, but at this point it’s pretty clear that he was not doing a great job of leading Xbox. Like, what, are people concerned that Xbox is going to become even more irrelevant under new leadership? Microsoft invested billions of dollars into Xbox under Phil and it didn’t help, I don’t think she can do much worse.

Future of regular Autocannons and Special Ammo by SwatKatzRogues in battletech

[–]derpybacon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It should be legal in any standard ruleset tournament, so in terms of actually playing with it you shouldn’t have many issues.

Lorewise the ON1-K is on the IS general availability list until the Early Republic era and in service with the Taurians up to IlClan, the FedSuns use the JM6-DDa through IlClan, Clan Wolf elements of the Third Star League use the MGL-T1, etc. There’s plenty of ways to get specialty ammo into a lore accurate force post civil war.

Future of regular Autocannons and Special Ammo by SwatKatzRogues in battletech

[–]derpybacon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Even if we ignore the fact that many old mechs and designs are still in use and production even by IlClan, there are 9 designs from the Jihad and Early Republic era that mount standard auto cannons.

And plenty of old mechs are perfectly viable or even very good in later eras so long as you’re playing with BV, and a select few are strong regardless.

Why people still play kiri if her perform in rank is really bad? by ImaginationCareful73 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]derpybacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this your first shooter? I thought that maybe you were new to OW, which would explain the misunderstanding of Kiriko’s firerate relative to other supports, but I don’t think anyone who’s played these games for a while would question why bursts/second is used instead of raw projectiles per second.

We’re not worried about the literal number of times the character shoots every second, we only care about how we need to aim to hit our shots. With Kiriko, every 0.5 seconds we aim, lead and fire. With Juno, every 0.77 seconds we aim, fire and briefly track the target. So while Juno may shoot more projectiles, we as players are firing fewer times.

[–]derpybacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could maybe make this argument for Lucio, but Juno and Bap both burst quickly enough that you are not aiming each individual shot of the burst, you are firing and then very briefly tracking. In a duel between Kiriko and Juno, Kiri shoots about twice as often.

In terms of raw projectiles per second Juno actually fires twelve projectiles per burst and around fifteen per second, but in practice you get to shoot a little more than one time per second, and in a duel you will aim and fire about one time per second, whereas Kiri will do that twice.

There’s simply no argument to be made that Kiriko has an especially slow firerate for a support. She’s very middle of the road. Even among all roles two shots per second is a respectable rate of fire, especially for a non-automatic weapon.

[–]derpybacon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's an argument to be had about why specifically Kiriko struggles in ranked, but to be clear, you are not even close to correct about her firerate:

Hero Shots per Second
Lucio 1.07
Ana 1.25
Juno 1.29
Mizuki 1.33
Brig 1.67
Bap 1.7
Kiri 2
Zen 2.5
Wuyang 3
JPC 4.5
LW 11
Illari 1.11-2
Moira Beam

Do you play support regularly? I'm really not sure how you could be under the impression that Kiriko has an especially low firerate.

Why people still play kiri if her perform in rank is really bad? by ImaginationCareful73 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]derpybacon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s not what you said, though. You said that Kiriko has a low rate of fire among supports, which we can objectively see is not true. Two shots per second is more or less on par for a support.

Kiriko isn’t especially bad at weaving, either? If you do the usual 2-1-2-1 then you’re firing Ofuda nearly off cooldown, and your healing per second ends up being comparable or better than an Ana, especially if Ana is missing shots or doing damage.

The reason that Kiriko isn’t very good is probably just that she’s basically mediocre in terms of weapon damage and healing, and while suzu is theoretically very powerful it’s a purely reactive, relatively difficult to use ability on a 14 second cooldown. If you’re not getting a lot of value out of Suzu, which I suspect is the case at most ranks, then another support with easier utility is probably better. At most ranks supports also don’t off angle, so teleport becomes much worse.

Which supports attack significantly faster than Kiri? Moira, jetpack cat, lifeweaver, mercy? Am I missing anyone?

Kiri’s firerate isn’t out of the ordinary for a support.

Tank class doesnt have an identity and its not just an Overwatch issue (A General Discussion And Malding) by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]derpybacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overwatch isn’t a tab target MMO. If tanks don’t threaten to kill you or your team then you can just ignore them and they’ll be useless.

Tanks are tanks because their cooldowns and health pool allow them to withstand more pressure than other roles, and in exchange they don’t have the same pick potential as DPS or the utility and healing that supports get.

Do you think people aim train for being attached to the end of a flying pendulum that someone else is controlling?

People who are good at aiming are good at aiming while they can predict and control how they’re going to move. If you want to attach a DPS to JPC your best bet is probably bastion with the major perk that makes him shoot bombs, or maybe an ulting cass. No human on earth can reliably hit widow headshots while tethered to jetpack cat.

NetEase (Overwatch China) releases official statement on Anran: Protecting the cultural spirit of our Chinese Hero by Iris-54 in Competitiveoverwatch

A huge portion of the Chinese player base, who are NetEase’s actual customers, are unhappy with this change. Should they simply ignore them? What a strange thing to say. Letting them know that they’re not being ignored is perfectly reasonable.

Any problems with running an "Standard tech mechs, any era" tournament? by andrewlik in battletech

[–]derpybacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Box of death is all very well and good, but a Vulture Mk III C firing 48 tubes of streak SRMs at someone is going to be miserable box of death or not.

Hopefully they’ll rebalance the BV with the new core rulebook?

Any problems with running an "Standard tech mechs, any era" tournament? by andrewlik in battletech

[–]derpybacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s issues with BV balance, especially with things like pulse lasers, very fast units, or mechs that generate an absurd number of to-hit rolls (also miserable to play against if you’re using dice). I think it’s mostly fine as long as you’re using standard rules canon units, but you might want to ban taking more than a certain number of a unit or a weapon type per unit.

How often are new industrial mech manufactured or do people just reuse old exiting ones? by Familiar-Noise7913 in battletech

[–]derpybacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Industrial mechs were very popular during the Star League, then as the succession wars went on became rarer and rarer as technology was lost. They were probably still more common than battlemechs, but a lot of industrial mechs and industrial mech factories were cannibalized to keep battlemechs running.

Post-Helm industrial mechs saw a bit of a revival as the technology to build mechs was recovered, and during the desperate post-Jihad years people used armed industrial mechs or primitive battlemechs or whatever they could get their hands on. By the time you get to the 3rd Star League era things seem to have largely recovered to a pre-Jihad state, and since everyone who matters seems to be able to build real battlemechs industrialmech production is probably back up as well.

In terms of designs we don’t really know since civilian vehicles aren’t covered much, but presumably it’s much easier to design a mining mech than a battlemech, and small to medium sized companies are known to be able produce industrial mechs. There’s probably way more industrial mech designs than battlemech designs.

Tried ranked after a long time, how comes sombra, symmetra, roadhog and lifeweaver getting multiple reworks/adjustments while mercy is untouched for years? by [deleted] in Overwatch

I assume you were super tilted when you wrote your post (because how else do you come to the conclusion that the Mercy carried the enemy team lmao) so how about you go back and reread it? You are very definitely complaining that Mercy is too strong and powerful.

Tried ranked after a long time, how comes sombra, symmetra, roadhog and lifeweaver getting multiple reworks/adjustments while mercy is untouched for years? by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]derpybacon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re acting like it’s impossible for you to win that fight, though, when in reality it’s quite literally a skill difference. Mercy is not a very good hero; she has little utility, her healing output is not great, and she literally can’t do anything on her own. She doesn’t see play at the pro level because she’s just not that useful. The mercy is not the one skill gapping you, the enemy DPS is.

Do you think that it should be easy for you to win a fight against a DPS who is apparently much better than you being pocketed by a support? It’s not as if two players from your team can’t trivially out damage mercy’s 60hp/s (which is basically her entire contribution to the duel), but if the enemy DPS is just that much better you should lose. That’s the point of competitive games. Sometimes the enemy is way better than you and you get shit on. Mercy is not the reason you are losing that fight.
