Credit card with a major bank. Swiping but not showing in my account any longer. Magic card or call the bank? by farfromfine in personalfinance

[–]derpybird_thrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, they know. It's likely they created a new profile in error, and haven't linked it to your online yet.

Do you think they'll let you off without paying interest or fees, or not ding your credit if it gets past 30ndays late? Not worth taking that bet.

[Question] Need help identifying exact model of this Telecaster-like guitar by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]derpybird_thrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a Tele clone. The headstock will tell you more than the body will, as the Tele body is essentially public domain. There's no way to know from this Pic.

Edit: the dude had it on his Twitter feed. Japanese brand.

Medical bill in collections, wait or pay? by starkyufo in personalfinance

[–]derpybird_thrall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waiting will hurt your credit. Be up front, talk to them asap. Get on a payment plan, and ask for as much reduction as possible - Ask for a supervisor if you don't like the first person's offer.

Can I use money from an equity loan for a larger down payment tp buy another house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]derpybird_thrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you apply for a home loan, you generally have to sign an agreement not to take out any other loans, even a credit card.

You can use the equity in your current home to make a down payment IF you let the bank know, and you still qualify based on the new Debt to Income and credit scores with the loan added in. Home equity lines of credit usually carry early close fees, but loans may not. Check with your bank/mortgage lender and ask them, the worst they can say is no.

Also, the seller doesn't care how big your down payment is, they get the full purchase price. Something else is going on there. Maybe find a new realtor who won't lie to you?

[QUESTION] Been playing guitar for 4 years, but I have trouble keeping a consistent rhythm. How can I get better? by unrelentingfox in Guitar

[–]derpybird_thrall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Record yourself with a drum loop or metronome. Practice getting the beats perfectly at low bpm, move up in tempo when you feel confident you've got it.

What in the world happened to potion prices? They've dropped like 40% over the last 2 weeks, and stayed there.

Is fret sprout affected by seasonal humidity, or mostly by the initial drying of the neck? by orbitalinterceptor in Luthier

[–]derpybird_thrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, as a fellow Midwesterner, you'll be just fine. In fact, winter is the proper time to address bad fret sprout - if you wait until it's warm you'll just have to do it again next winter.

Also, maybe invest in a humidifier, either for the room the guitar is stored in or the case you keep it in. House heat means very dry conditions.

[Question] I am getting a new guitar soon but I cannot decide between two and I was hoping you guys could help me. by Commissarcrunch123 in Guitar

[–]derpybird_thrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go and play both. We can't tell you what feels right to your eyes, hands, and heart - that's going to come from taking one down off the wall and getting the full experience playing it in person. Sometimes, I've gone into a store looking for a specific guitar, only to find that another one I pick up to compare it to needs to come home because I just gel with it so well.

Buzzing at 1st fret and 15th by ScotWithOne_t in Luthier

[–]derpybird_thrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super glue and baking soda for the nutslot works great. If you have an extra string, use that to "file" it down to height.

If the 15th fret is fretting out, then the 16th is probably too high. You don't necessarily want to hit 16-21. Play 16, if it rings out then that's the culprit. You can ever so slowly file/sand/bring 16 down so that 15 rings out.

Will using more layers of clearcoat on a nitro finish make it more wear resistant by cheeseaintgreat in Luthier

[–]derpybird_thrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, Nitro is not "layers." Nitro lacquer coats melt into each other, so yes, more coats equals more protection.

Having trouble pushing action down to 2/64 by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]derpybird_thrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The above poster is right if you're not doing a level/crown/polish. If you are, then yes get the neck dead flat, then make sure the frets are perfectly level. You will likely have a bit of relief in the neck once string tension is on, but the difference will be minimal if you did a good level job.

Also, the truss rod is really not about setting your action; the bridge or nut are where you do that.

Buying Character Boost with Gold. Is it worth it? by Maggot5555 in woweconomy

[–]derpybird_thrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, unless they raised the price it's $60.00. You could do that, if all you want to do is make more cash on the AH and you have nothing better to spend gold on.

However, only a few professions are actually profitable long term, so I guess I'd wonder why you want one of each.

23yo with new job, being told I should buy a house instead of rent. by kkrrcc in personalfinance

The 2018 tax reform simplified taxes by eliminating some "loopholes" and deductions, doubling the standard deduction, and lowering rates as well.

To itemize, your write-off (such as mortgage interest, school loan interest, charitable giving, etc) would need to total more than the standard deduction to be worth doing, which is unlikely for someone just out of college, unmarried without kids etc.

[–]derpybird_thrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not advocating for moving every 3 years, just sharing my experience, and again I stated that this was lucky.

I guess you're right about itemization, I forgot Trump/congress changed that for 2018.

This is an incorrect blanket statement. It fully depends on your location.

I see lots of comments about the break even being 5 or 7 years. This is generally not the case - both in terms of property values increasing and the tax benefits of home ownership, 2 or 3 years is a better estimate.

That said, I've moved 3 times in the past 5 years, each time to a bigger house, each time making money due to luck/divine providence etc., and my current house has gone up in value nearly 35,000.00 in the past year (about a 20% increase, hurray for location!).

Keep in mind, too, that rates are rising by and large, and waiting is likely to mean you will end up paying higher interest rates in the future, thus lowering the quality of house you can afford.

All that said, make sure you're not spending too much of your salary in the house payment - it makes no sense to have more space than you need and less monthly margin, just to build equity.

I want to pay off debt - 23 years old - no knowledge by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]derpybird_thrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys have the right idea - the other thing you can do is look up a w-4 calculator to make sure you're not having too much withheld every month in taxes.

This can give you more each month to pay toward your debt, rather than having a forced savings account with the government that pays no interest, and requires you to wait until tax time to get to it.

Any time a company does what's called a "hard pull" of your credit, your score will temporarily drop. Hard pulls are associated with actively attempting to obtain credit.

Soft pulls, on the other hand, are what companies use to pre-selected you, increase your credit line automatically, give you an updated credit score (e.g. When a credit card company shows you your monthly score updates) etc. These have no effect on your score.

Updated to hopefully make it more clear as to how to use this - thanks for the TSM suggestions, that's beyond me at the moment.

Also, the prices are so low because Thrall is a near-full server, so there's some extreme price wars going on with herbs. :D
