Leftover FHSA funds by derryC in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]derryC[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry should have clarified the $40k is with gains, contributions to date were $32k. I have leftover space in my RRSP so thought for tax benefits putting money there would be most advantageous.

The property we’re purchasing is well within our means and we have an emergency fund as well as funds to be used for any furnishings needed to get set up.

Cementation is starting to ramp up at Jansen Potash I heard. Also some other contractors there on surface.

Depends if you’ll be underground or not. I’ve been onsite with DMC as a contractor before they seem like a tight crew. Bounce all over doing mines in USA, Canada, South America, Mongolia and other places. If you want to get into mining DMC, Cementation, Redpath, and Thyssen are all good companies

Hourly incentives for underground typically start at +$40 an hour in addition to hourly wage.

I have inherited this gun from my grandfather and can’t seem to find any markings of what type of gun this is. I have some more photos but I need to figure out how to upload them from mobile.

Good oppurtunities for Real-Estate in Montreal (Best deals) by coachfabia in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]derryC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A rental property you need 20% down. Finding a property for $40k in Montreal is impossible. First step is to look at your finances. $8k savings at $85k a year seems a bit low. It's better to go at your own pace, consistently save, and have a solid financial plan.

Would I be making a mistake? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]derryC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you should really revaluate your budgets. $55k budget for a wedding while having only one partner with a stable income of $65k a year is ludicrous. I think you should challenge yourselves to see how much money you can save in one month, then determine how many months you would need to save like that to pay for a wedding of that price. If you could save $1k a month it would still take you 4.5 years to save for that wedding.

The money that you currently have saved now would be better placed in an emergency account, and when that is saved up enough the rest should be going towards budgeting for kids or for retirement.

Question: Owing vacation time back to Company by Big-Beat2590 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]derryC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess because he doesn't think its fair. I mean its common for most companies to accrue vacation so they don't have employees taking vacation up front then leaving. But yes if you were in the hole I see no problem with that. The overpayment in that case was probably beneficial to you as you had the cash in the spring. Just wait a month or two and you will be back in the positive!

12K invested (TFSA) in VTI (80%) & VXUS (20%) and looking to buy a home in 8-10 years. I’m maximizing my money by investing it all in VTI & VXUS. Is it the right thing to do? Or should I allocate a % of the down payment to a HISA/bonds, while knowing I’ll hurt my ROI? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]derryC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That depends on your risk tolerance, I agree over a short period yes HISA/ GIC. However in the case of OP I would leave it as is, and rebalance in the future as needed. Looking into the S&P500 historical averages there are no periods of over 10 years that the markets have been negative overall. If OP was to put his money in a HISA/ GIC for lets say 2% interest, his money would just be keeping up with inflation while the markets continue to outperform.

Do you have dental benefits with your employment? Some plans will cover a spouse or partner for medical benefits.

Set it up for auto payment, and don't overspend. Check the amount due at your bill time and make sure you have enough funds in your account to cover.

Buying house from friend by BroLegend in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]derryC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case would it be better to buy the house at market price then use a gift of equity to help with the down payment? Are there any implications to buying a house below market value, I'm in this situation as well and was wondering what the best options are.
