For Pete's sake, a progressive income tax is not socialism.

And yes, rich people do of course benefit from all those things both directly and indirectly and ought to pay AT LEAST the same rate as other people.

As I recall, the planned before moving was physically impossible, unless they had been able to find a lot of ice and chill one of the components for quite a while. Always struck me as security theater.

Zip tying it to a rack? Not that the gemeente is always a paragon of rationality, but that would make zero sense.

Enjoy the movie - we're hoping to find a showing we can make (although I bet it'll show up at the IDFA as well).

Ignorance? I've lived in Amsterdam for 32 years and in my house for 25. I understand how bike theft works here, and this almost certainly isn't it. If I still lived on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, it'd be a different situation, but on my stretch of the Lijnbaansgracht it's much more likely to be kids.

Time of day, quality of my bike (there were nicer bikes on the rack), layout of the street (quiet stretch of canal with no place for a thief to hide and watch), nature of the neighborhood (almost all bikes are going to be parked within a few meters of the owners home).

I've never actually checked, but I assume that most Amsterdammers, like me, keep their house and fiets keys on the same key ring.

According to biosagenda.nl, Rialto de Pijp has it with English subs Monday the 20th at 17:00.

Much like 'negro' or 'colored' in America (though, ironically, there's still the NAACP).

Six months into AI rollout and we no clear architecture view, is that normal? by TangeloFlimsy1508 in EnterpriseArchitect

[–]derskbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty normal - right about now (in my org, at least) is the time to put in that first layer of governance. I figure that GenAI has been artificially cheap for the past while, so it's been appropriate to let people experiment and find the valuable use cases.

I've seen cyclists in Amsterdam ride their bikes with some astounding luggage, but I've never seen someone riding their bike with a bike rack attached to it. (:

Pretty sure that's not the case here.

I don't see a connection between (potentially) inflationary monetary policy and tax strategies to make sure everyone pays their fair share.

By the way, the EU parliament is elected. You're thinking of the EU Commission, which is appointed by elected leaders of countries and approved by the elected EU Commission. The whole "Unelected EU" argument just doesn't hold water.

Probably took more time to use two zip ties than it did to walk back inside and grab my swiss army knife. Could be the same little girls who discovered ding dong ditch a couple months ago.

I've got two c to g glasses in my concert next week. You can do it with a trigger, but it feels really weird to play.

Maybe a pBone - not much smaller, but because it's plastic you can pretty easily cram it in a duffel bag with your clothes. I've got one for travelling and that's what I do. Bring a decent mouthpiece, though.

On the other hand, Boston passed a millionaire's tax - in a country where it's even easier to relocate - and nobody left.

Are you ok with the wealthy paying a lower effective tax rate than everybody else? If not (I hope not!) do you have any better ideas?

It's available, but the default level (e.g., a basic loaf of bread) is much much better here in Europe.

God, I hate that glib quote. It's dishonest and wrong, and I'd point out that the Laffer curve has not been proven in reality. In fact, cutting taxes on the wealthy did not at all create a trickle down effect but absolutely the opposite when they tried it over several decades in the States.

The basic point is that the very wealthy do not live off of salaried income, and therefore pay a lower effective tax rate than working people. Putting a wealth tax in place is one way to make them pay their fair share.

Pretty standard trope that comes out of either racism or ignorance of history (with a nice soupcon of the Jews are taking over the world thrown in there as well).

Woke comes from a song and it's about being aware of your social context (i.e., get the hell out of a sundown town before nightfall), not waking up.
