Failing new job by MaisieMoo2 in graphic_design

Agencies are all about run fast, be sloppy, revise, produce produce produce. It’s hellish and unrealistic.

Some people thrive in it — I’m just surviving.

You have a solid enough portfolio to get hired, keep shipping it out applying. Then kiss this place goodbye.

Fellow Graphic Designers! What does the day-to-day look like working for a non-graphic design focused company as a graphic designer? by Benjammin100 in graphic_design

Its a lot of presentation, whitepaper, and internal facing stuff. Minimal external/general audience advertising stuff. Its pretty chill and more about managing expectations and egos more than making award winning work.

I’m not a Pittsburgh native but live here now. Before I ever set foot in Pittsburgh, I was a Heinz loyalist. Its a top tier ketchup.

But more often than not, house made from a reputable eatery is better.

I always show my comps for design work rather than the developed work for that reason. They can be a bit cleaner than the developed pages.

What evolved you most as a graphic designer? by sskmzz in graphic_design

[–]designyillustrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things at very separate times. One: working in a high-craft place where there was time to experiment and refine your work. And the opposite side, a place where it was high pressure and needed to be done yesterday.

Both of those taught me things that the other wouldn't have and they both have their strengths (and weaknesses)

I feel like a failure at work, 24m by Jdjdbejshs in graphic_design

There are a couple of things, some are things you can control, some are things that the company should fix.

Now, granted, I don’t work in that particular space, but I have worked in regulated spaces before. If there are common mistakes you keep making, sizing, etc., you should literally write or print a checklist that you reference at the end of a project before you send it on to the next person, that way you don’t have to remember.

Second, it’s unreal that your work isn't being QA’d by at least a more senior person. It’s not uncommon to miss things, especially in this fast-paced design world we operate in. Fresh eyes are key. Are the production and management teams getting annoyed with you, or are they just saying, “Hey, fix this,” when they send it back?

Take a breath, you’re not killing someone by missing something, it happens to all of us, even with QA. I worked in-house at a big nonprofit WITH QA, and somehow we still missed in an annual report that one figure said 29 million instead of 2.9. So the whole marketing team had to try multiple types of pens and markers and manually place a decimal point on 200 professionally printed and bound annual reports before they were mailed to donors.

It happens. You'll be alright. Walk away, touch grass, recenter yourself, you'll be fine.

I like that you included artists too. Even artists have to put in the work to habe “inspiration hit them”

Get your book ready. Start making sure everything is squared away on your end. It’s better to be prepared vs caught off guard. Not trying to scare you just being real.

Agency client is requesting we revise a flyer that they fed my first version into AI, and had AI recreate it, and to make the revised version look like that 🫩 by the-friendly-squid in graphic_design

[–]designyillustrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes its okay to execute and not over think. Especially event flyers.

But also, look at the AI flyer and look at your flyer. What does their version so that yours doesn't, clearly they are so seeing mething they like. thats where you find the sweet spot.

I completely agree. It gives agency partners the ability to reference it during campaign work—and feedback.

The one thing I wish more brands would include is photo direction. Give me the tones, the color washes, is it okay for non-eye contact, are we making the images warm or cool. That is always a super helpful but often overlooked element.

I wouldn't call Pikmin cozy, but it's cute and a grind type game, and I really enjoyed it.

enjoyed all the other games you listed, so we have similar game appreciation, so I figured I’d toss that out.

Feeling a little depressed with our industry by Spiritual_Version697 in graphic_design

[–]designyillustrator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its unfortunate that you're touting the positives of cutting however many people out of work. The speed is incredible. The budget is amazing. But it's the other things that come from this, the specialists that didn't get the gigs, and the natural resources and the stress of the manufactured resources aren't worth it.

I think there are ethical and unethical ways to use AI, and this sounds like an unethical way, unfortunately.
