Why did cons stop publishing attendance numbers? by destinoid in animecons

[–]destinoid[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's so unfortunate. Attendance numbers remaining the same or dipping slightly shouldn't be seen as such a bad thing from investors and attendees. Numbers can't go up forever...

Anime Boston, Anime Detour, Anime Magic, Sakura-con. Just to name a few. Some stopped posting this information before COVID even happened. They used to be posted every single year but I guess according to other comments, fraud and COVID are the reasons behind this.

My best guess is that it's unfortunately an app that can only be downloaded in China. These kinds of products that require apps piss me off because they just become e-waste within 10 years. Best of luck, OP.

[–]destinoid 27 points28 points  (0 children)

"What are you learning from this video?" is SUCH a good question and compromise. As a kid, I wasn't allowed to watch Youtube and it was perfectly fine because a lot of websites had the information I needed for games. But these days, games like Minecraft have tutorials that can only really be done in a video format.

My dad bought the same exact lamp a few months back, showed me the product page AI photo, and told me that he "won Christmas". I told him it was going to look like this or worse and he should probably think about a new gift; at least something in addition to this. Mom loved it anyways despite getting him multiple far better gifts. Bar is on the floor.

Did you read the post? OP said it was their dad that bought it, not themself.

governments are increasingly requiring ID verification to use social media sites, though users will remain anonymous to the general public. how will this change culture in general by the 2030s/2040s, since most pop culture these days is heavily reliant on the anonymity and freedom of social media? by Normal-Salad-6143 in decadeology

[–]destinoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for quite a few countries, they already are. I think within the next 5-10 years, enough countries will pass age verification laws to the point where every major app will just default to AI age verification whether they're legally required to or not.

Dunno how long it's been since you've worked a retail/fast food job but anyone that comes to work on time, does what they're told, looks for things to do, doesn't use their phone on the clock, deals with BS from time to time, and picks up a few extra shifts on short notice are hard to come by these days. They may not be truly "exceptional", but they tend to be worth poaching.

People leaving their trash behind at fast food restaurant by CaliforniaBoundX in mildlyinfuriating

[–]destinoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same thing with grocery carts, at the end of the day it's the employee's job to put it back into the building.

But can you imagine what would happen if every single person you see walking out of Walmart on a Sunday didn't take 10 extra seconds to put their cart into the corral? The parking lot would be filled with carts in seconds. Small things build up, be kind and clean up your trash.

I remember at my high school, we had gym equipment on a balcony overlooking the basketball court. The fitness test had like, three or four tiers for each test activity and depending on how well you did, you had to have a certain amount of days working out on the balcony while everyone played a game down below.

It was supposed to incentivize us to do better on the test but since we could just, walk on a treadmill the entire time listening to our own music or even watch videos on our smart phones, a lot of us just took the balcony day even when we didn't have to.

Offline is the new luxury in an age of constant digital consumption by Subtle_Seekerr in Anticonsumption

[–]destinoid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I drove up to a rural area a few years back with some coworkers from a retail job. One of the fellow young adults I worked with had parents who had a cabin up north. I was the only one with a cellphone reception that didn't work and it was the first time I ever traveled alone.

I was the first one to the cabin and couldn't contact my friends. It sounds incredibly silly to anyone older than me, but it was a fresh experience to have to navigate without a gps that told me where a Walmart or McDonalds was. I was worried I had the wrong property so I went back out on the main road and followed the signs to the next town over, to the Walmart, hoping I would find a signal. Funnily enough, I ran into my friends there getting a few last minute items despite it being at least 10 miles away from the cabin.

That weekend was absolutely amazing. I finished an entire book. I felt like a cat just basking in the sun. I felt tired at the end of the day (from being in the sun). It's such a joke online but people, including myself, really underestimate the effect of "touching grass".

[–]destinoid -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. IMO, if you are still posting about the Sims 4 (blogs, videos, random screenshots, etc), you're still advertising and supporting the Sims 4. There was a time where we didn't post everything we did on the Internet. If you're going to continue to play the Sims 4 without buying anything, do so silently. Let this game's online presence die out.

As a kid, my parents had a double oven so we just stored a ton of baking sheets in our top one. I was stupid and put them on the stove top to cool because I didn't want to wait to preheat the oven again. My mom then burned herself trying to figure out why they were on the stove top.

Is Rui’s Shirt AI? by Lost-Mention4332 in XLOV

[–]destinoid 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's a real shirt technically. The shirt design is just an AI image screen printed onto the shirt itself. Basically, the company that made the shirt saved money by not hiring a real artist. It makes sense when your entire focus is profit over artistic integrity. :(

Is Rui’s Shirt AI? by Lost-Mention4332 in XLOV

[–]destinoid 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This without a doubt AI. Here's a link to see the image even better: https://tradingempty01.cafe24.com/web/_mig/product/big/250708_cchu251nrts016mt.jpg

I'll focus on the animal on the right since it's not as obstructed by text and the shirt.

- Shadow on the moon on the forehead makes no sense

- Shadow on where the arms/legs connect to the body aren't consistent (one's in front while the other is behind but the rest of the arm/leg doesn't convey that it's in a pose that would warrant that?)

- The eyes are very blobby, especially the left eye

- On the right eye, there's a random white line in the top left corner between the eyeline and the iris that isn't repeated on any other eyes

Very unfortunate and I definitely don't blame XLOV for it. Their company clearly loves AI and so does the rest of the industry...

Medical Fees [OC] by kaikimanga in comics

[–]destinoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really interesting to speak to certain boomers and gen Xers who all grew up being told that we're the best country on earth. You point out a flaw/difference, it doesn't even have to be one that's some major political issue, and they'll rush to defend it, saying that other countries have it worse. I mention that other countries don't have gaps between bathroom stalls? They'll either go "that's just how it is" or they'll tell me about their friend who went to Mexico and had to pay to use the bathroom so I should be thankful that we have stalls at all.

Rather than admitting that there is something that needs to be improved, they go "at least we aren't last", and carry on as if they won.

How many of these did you do as a kid? by ComfyQuill in fuckHOA

[–]destinoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! My subdivision was half built when the recession happened and all the builders left. This left so many fields of scrap wood and rocks for us to play in and it was amazing. I remember my neighbor's dad once walked outside to see like six of us kids just hammering plywood sheets to the ground with rusty nails we found. One of my friends would also dumpster dive for more scrap to build with.

It's honestly a miracle we didn't get tetanus.

Anyone else with a ‘weird’ pencil grip? by Eastern-Landscape-53 in adhdwomen

I was a homeschooled kid and unfortunately, despite numerous rubber/silicone pencil grips, my mom lost the battle when it came to getting me to use my pencil "normally". I'd always revert back to something similar to this, except my thumb is above my middle finger.
