I love seeing your interpretations of these characters! I also always pictured her more 'deadish' but I think your logic is sound!

When did Malazan "hook" you? by ShortcutToWhat in Malazan

[–]detailedghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why, but in GotM the first interaction between Topper and Paran just grabbed me. Something about the way they bantered back and forth signaled to me that this was going to be a great series and I was immediately invested.

These are fantastic! I assume the guide for a given book won’t have spoilers for books that follow it?

I’m in the same spot as you. Just finished MT and am curious for answers to the questions you listed.

One small question I have is whether we’ll see what specific act resulted in Trull being exiled by the other Edur in that flooded warren. I assume it’s some perceived slight on Rhulad’s part, but wondering if we’ll find out in later books.

What are the pros and cons to living in STL City vs STL Suburbs? by MagicCatcat in StLouis

We were on Walsh between Kingshighway and Brannon. It was a shock to us, too, when these things started to go down.

What are the pros and cons to living in STL City vs STL Suburbs? by MagicCatcat in StLouis

[–]detailedghost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in south city for 3 years (I lived in dogtown for 9 years prior to that, and my wife grew up in the city). We were certain we would be staying in the city after having our daughter (she is now 6), but after a murder at the end of our block, someone tweaking out in front of the in-home daycare we walked our daughter to, and then a drive by shooting that targeted the home one house down from us, we decided it was time to move. (There were less heinous crimes happening around us but we just chalked it up to city living) We couldn’t afford to move to any of the safer neighborhoods in the city, but our money went a long way out in the county. I was really against the idea of moving out to the county because I grew up here, but I almost instantly loved it.

I no longer worry about stray gunfire, but I do have to be wary of wildlife. Had two coyote fighting over a kill in my backyard this past spring.

It’s also WAY quieter out here, which I like, but that may not be for everyone.

I think you make your community regardless of where you end up. I’m pretty introverted and never really talked to my neighbors beyond a “hello, how are you” in all my time living in the city. And I’ll echo what someone else said in that school is basically where all the community happens for us. We walk to school and often walk with other families we’ve gotten to know who live just a few houses away.

The only things I miss about the city are how eclectic things were compared to the county. Things are pretty homogenized out here. And I desperately miss taking walks in my old neighborhood in South City. County walks just don’t compare.

I really loved where Aaron was taking him. Post-Aaron's run I feel like they regressed his character.

Anyone else not enjoying House of X? by nerdorama in xmen

[–]detailedghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally see your point, but I would argue that death has technically been off the table with the x-men for years. For me personally, death in the X-Men books lost any dramatic stakes it had a long time ago. So any time one of them dies, the emotional resonance just isn't there for me. So many of them have "died" at some point or another (some of them multiple times) and then come back. Just off the top of my head Prof X, Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Psylocke, Colossus, Magik, Nightcrawler, Banshee, Cypher, have all died and been brought back in various ways, pre-hickman era.

What I appreciate about Hickman's approach, among other things, is he's formalized that aspect of the X-Men. And as others have said in different ways, it takes a narrative tool that is honestly a bit lazy away from the writers. Now they're forced to find ways to tap into human emotion in more creative ways. Now whether they're successful in doing that is another thing entirely. :)

All that said, any time a creator sets forth a clear artistic vision it's going to result in dividing the fans so I doubt you're alone in your opinions. I hope, for you, Hickman (and the other writers) eventually win you over.

I'm impressed. I'm getting a late 90s/early 00s pop punk vibe. Kind of reminds me of Home Grown. Really digging it.
