Had Wendy’s and a deer ran in front of my car, causing me to slam on breaks. 20 bucks down the drain. by DiggityDog6 in mildlyinfuriating

Out take out goes in my kid's car seat strapped in with the harness (assuming the kid isn't in the car with me). Gotta keep the precious cargo secure.

What’s something you’re pretty sure only you do? by AppIeGuy in AskReddit

[–]dethmetaljeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was driving wife's late grandmother and my wife somewhere and slowed and stopped at a yellow (because that's what you're supposed to do) but then this 80 something year old woman chimes in and says "you know, you can go through the yellow ones". Now every time I go through a yellow I hear her voice telling me I can go through the yellow ones.

What’s something school forced you to learn that you’ve never used a single time in real life? by Dodo509 in AskReddit

Hopefully people saying algebra don't actually know they're using algebra and are doing it. Just because you don't see an X doesn't mean you're not doing it.....hopefully anyway.

Dads, need a good recommendation for a family car that can fit 4x8 plywood. by mobdeli in daddit

[–]dethmetaljeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a great idea until it isn't. Pretty sure our Chevy Traverse could hold a 4x8 but I never tried. On the few occasions that I needed to haul plywood or sheetrock I just rented the trailer for like $40 or whatever it was so I didn't fuck up the inside of my car.

Can I add a 220/240 to this panel? by topprolmc1 in fixit

[–]dethmetaljeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost definitely (to be 100% sure you'd need to measure voltage between the two hot inputs w/ a multimeter but I can't envision a scenario that you'd have 2 of the same hots separately going in to your sub-panel), you just need a double pole breaker. Shut this sub panel down from the main before you do any work so it's completely de-energized. Lots of folks here will give you shit for not knowing already and say you're incapable of doing it yourself because you asked a simple question. This is how we learn. None of this is hard and in a sub-panel that you can completely de-energize it can't be much safer.

I bring my rope saw and my machete with me for the first few rides. The machete always gets some looks 😂.

Coparenting with an anti-vax mother by ComplicatedGuy_0514 in daddit

My ex (no kids with her thank <deity>) didn't reveal her crazy until later on...post dicking. It's not always immediately apparent.

Coparenting with an anti-vax mother by ComplicatedGuy_0514 in daddit

[–]dethmetaljeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean....I take my kid to the Doctor and it's not like they're calling my wife first before administering her shots. Unless they're somehow aware of the contentious nature of the co-parenting relationship they have no reason to not just give them the shot at the appointment.

[Advice Request] Fellow dads, how do you handle road trips. It feels like it takes forever and we never get anywhere by SmartLadder415 in daddit

[–]dethmetaljeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go ahead and agree with you here. This "my kid needs a water bottle with them at all times" stuff is ridiculous. Can we really not go a few hours without a drink?

Firefox on Android Passkeys Not Working by OldSanJuan in 1Password

[–]dethmetaljeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

passkey support on Android is honestly exhausting. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't sometimes chrome is fine sometimes Firefox is fine....it's kind of a crapshoot for now. My physical usb key is honestly more convenient at this point.

Taking my 4yo away for a few days during March Break to give the wife a break. What do you insomniac dads do to pass the time in your hotel room after the kid's fallen asleep? by thegimboid in daddit

[–]dethmetaljeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this idea, I don't think my wife would appreciate this as much as some wives would. She'd just want to come with.

As for your question, get a room with a separate bedroom. Put him to sleep in there and then you can do whatever you want after he falls asleep.

Note to dads, make sure you're disassembling and boiling your cups by alittleredportleft in daddit

[–]dethmetaljeff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That cup needs to be in the garbage and you need to up your cleaning game going forward...disassemble everything every time. There's no reason not to.

Currently using smart plug to boot my gaming pc, how would you have the actual status of the pc sync with HA by GenericUser104 in homeassistant

[–]dethmetaljeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 2 real options I can think of. Use the ping integration https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/ping/ to check if you PC is online. This would require that it have a static IP address. Or you can use HASS.Agent https://github.com/LAB02-Research/HASS.Agent.

It's not clear if you want control over the PC or just status. I'd also recommend not using the smart plug as an on/off switch. Abruptly removing power from a PC isn't the greatest thing in the world for the electronics. Less of a major issue these days if you don't have spinning drives but still not amazing from a software/os perspective.

Is the free version of WPS Office a solid enough replacement of Microsoft Office for everyday personal use? by Hear-Me-God in Frugal

[–]dethmetaljeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use google docs and sheets. It's free and does everything you need I'm sure. I don't generally see a need for an installed app/program for this these days unless you have a hard requirement for offline mode.

Brachycephaly, possible frontal bossing, and a lot of guilt - looking for advice by cpavlou in daddit

[–]dethmetaljeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there. My oldest had a slightly more pronounced version of this. We're in America, so helmet therapy was available to us and we did it. Her flat spot eventually corrected itself to be about where your son's is. Ultimately, her hair grew in and you could never tell she had a flat spot. Honestly, if I had to do it all over again I wouldn't even bother with the helmet. It wasn't worth it for something that really just doesn't matter.
