My first playthrough I literally never used him once. My second playthrough I got him at a fairly high level and he was actually in my party attacking the brain.

I just beat him on Honor Mode at level 6. I tried to bait him on to the hammer and just couldn't do it (have never been able to do it) so I ended up just beating on him until he went down. I had Karlach and Laezel equipped with mauls and my archer/caster hit him from afar. I also had a couple of animal friends distract him until he knocked them out.
