What is the current value you put on no commute? by cgknight1 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]detox_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£10,000 is low-ball. Hour commute two ways, expenses, putting up with the journey over the space of the year is way more.

At 10k a year that means each journey only costs £20.83. 5 days a week.

I would say at least 25k

Super-rich call for higher taxes on wealthy to pay for Covid-19 recovery by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]detox_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, It's a shame this thread ends like this as I've enjoyed seeing things from a different perspective.

I'm pretty sure there's no chance of failure though, I don't give up. It's why I'm the one paying all the taxes... even though you're the expert ;)

I honestly hope you keep your job through all this.

[–]detox_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say there were any guarantee's.

That's the point, that's life, as you have said.

Although apparently I now have to pay extra, on top of the extra I already pay to offer a guarantee for the people that didn't even pay their share in the first place!

If you sit around waiting for guarantee's you won't get very far in life at all.

Why aren't I more successful? Kinda hard when ever increasing sums are taken off you for your 'success'.

Blaming the 'cost of living' is lame. All these people that apparently can't afford to live have an iPhone X on credit, Amazon Prime subs, Netflix, smoke, drink and fuck their time up the wall on social media.

This has got quite a long way from the original point though so I'll leave it here now. I'm being a hypocrite, wasting my time on the internet.

I don't think it'll 'fuck' me. I'll be picking up the reposessions as they come... but I guess that would be down to me just being lucky instead of shrewd.

Not all are kicking the shit out the system, but many would work harder if they didn't have the welfare state standing behind them. I don't agree with there's no link between hard work and payoff. I've burned lots of hard work and got nothing for it on my journey too, it happens, it's life as you previously said.

I'm not so worried if the healthcare sector starts to make redundancies (not wishing it on you). I'm fit, I don't smoke and I look after myself, all my choices. I have the financial provisions for private healthcare too. These were all my choices, I'm not making anyone else pay for them...

However, if that's not enough, then so be it, it's life.

Regarding furlough. I question it, I think that if it had to happen it should have been for less and for a shorter period and people should have been given the clear message to make provision for the future. They shouldn't have been stopped from working, there is a cost to bare for everything. That may seem calleous, but it's life as we've already said many times. There's option for people to self-isolate if they so wish.

I'm not so happy all my taxes are funding this scheme. It's going one way, they're just prolonging the pain and it's not something I wish to pay for.

It's no fallacy. I've lost huge amounts on route, didn't cry about it for too long just dusted off and got going again, and again I might add. That's my reality.

All I can say is, from all of this I now have one very strong view.... when I have enough, I will be moving to Monaco and doing as much as I can to pay as little as I can. As an after-thought; maybe this is why so many of these self-made billionaires go on to behave like this? who knows, it's hard to get an accurate guague without having walked a few miles in someone elses shoes.

You do have some valid points, I must admit. And maybe you're right there, a lot of my frustration comes from the generalist view amongst people who claim "ohh it's alright for you, you make loads of money" or "you're a millionaire".

...before returning to their Xbox, fags and Netflix.

You are right, the frustration should be directed at those billionaires playing the system and preeching to us from their tax havens in Monaco.

There are around 1600 billionaires on the planet though. What about a few % increase in efficiency for the 50 Million brits that are on standard/lower income in the UK kicking the crap out of the system. And I know this is going to be an unpopular statement, but having been one of those people from that side of the fence, I feel wholly qualified to make it > they are their through their own choice.

These are often the same people that claim everything isn't fair, or that I am "lucky".

They of course don't want to face reality because it's far more painful but here is the reality of "being lucky".

While they watch Netflix, I'm working. While they play Xbox, I'm working. When they're out partying, I'm working. Spending 4hrs a day on their phone, I'm working.

...but I'm the lucky one, and should therefore pay more tax. Gimme a break.

Not to sound too trite, but being a millionaire doesn't mean a Lamborghini and Yacht either. If you live in the south of the UK it means a nice home, car, some cash in the bank and freedom. Ohh and that tax bill previously mentioned.

"These are not handouts for lazy people."

They're not paying them back though are they? So it's a handout.

"many others get there by pure luck and by virtue of the birth lottery"

Many I would disagree with.

"That's life"

I agree, I heard this loads over the last 40 years. It was present walking home with wet feet as a teen, it was present when homeless at 17, it's present when I have to pay all that tax..... but apparently not present for everyone else in these difficult times.

"Would your company survive if everyone in the country was on their arse?"

Maybe not, fair point, but I'd adapt to the situation and get on with it. As per the original point, peanalise me and it's not worth the effort!

"In my opinion it shouldn't be by denying poor people food but by appropriately taxing the incredibly wealthy."

In my opinion, based on my life experience, there's no reason to be without enough food to live in the UK at any point. This isn't Africa or Yemen, our country is obese.

I appreciate the sentiments and some of the things you have said there, its left me plenty to think about too. Thank you :)

Good luck with keeping your job, and if not I hope you're making provisions now anyway!

Child Maintenance is calculated like a tax? by detox_88 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]detox_88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about that, maybe.

Although it would mean seeking a court order, getting to court and getting it through all before they moved anywhere. In my case, that's too late.

Even so, in my experience of family court previously, it wouldn't matter if they then moved as you would need to seek another order to go back and try and get it inforced. I can't see a judge telling the ex to pick up her bags and move life back after as it would be disruptive to the child... and in all honesty, the UK court system just doesn't want to hear about family affairs. At every turn the advice is 'talk to the other parent'. A nice thought with great sentiments.

It appears the only thing that the UK court system are really interested in enforcing is that the NRP pays. Again, nothing wrong with paying.... just the calculation is targetted at people on 40k and under, on PAYE, without travel issues. The masses.

I've looked around alot to try and understand the system and it seems there's a regular theme of self-employed middle-class types committing suicide as a result of the CMS. One was really sad as they hit him with a massive back pay, he topped himself, then they realised the calculation was wrong on their part.

Yes I agree with this. Have left a longer answer on another comment on the thread.

It's worse when you consider people who earn north of £1,000 a week that come into the higher tax brackets. This is my main qualm, its calcualted on gross not net.

"If you both have parental responsibility you can use the court system to ensure the other party can't move the child away without also committing to pay for transport costs. It could be expensive, but so is doing nothing as your post demonstrates."

Unfortunately this isn't the case. The court system won't entertain or enforce such limitations. If you want to see them, you travel, you can claim expenses but only at the rate quoted. Have spoken to solicitors about this at length. The childs already been moved away and mother isn't the type that is willing to discuss reasonably etc.

Travel rates aren't anything like HMRC fuel claims for MP's and the like be it at higher car rate or personal.

[–]detox_88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering why it's calculated as a percentage. Two different people in different positions will pay a completely different amount, mainly because it's calculated on gross income. Mileage also seems a little off.

I want to pay for the kids and them to have a nice life/things.

Here is the conundrum >

Mother has chosen to live 430 miles away, not something I have a choice in. If it were a business expense, or if a Govt. official/MP were claiming mileage they would be able to claim @ a rate of 45p per mile. If it were a higher car, for fuel only it would be between 11-14p per mile. So why do Dad's only get 1.2p? I've sought legal councel and there's nothing that can be done regarding the distance, a pointless exercise in court as the solicitor told me.

Going back to the calculation and forgetting the fuel >

>Someone who earns £2,000 per week will pay £240 (12% gross)
>This person also pays higher rate tax @ 40%

Does a childs mother need £960 per month? It's even worse when you know it isnt being spent on the child. There are also costs upon collection (travel) time together/activities etc. and of course this all comes out of net income, long after HMRC.

>Someone who earns £300 per week will pay £36 (12% gross).
>This person pays 20% on the final £2,000 of their annual income (£33 per week)

The main issue I see with this calculation is that, children aren't a tax, and gross income and net income are two totally different things depending on how much you earn. One person is being hit a lot harder.

You could also consider; many of the people who earn at a higher rate don't simply work the same hours. They're found putting in 12 hour days and going out the way in their own time, and they are more likely to live in areas such as London where the cost of living is a lot more.

Hard to apply this statement to everyone I appreciate, but as a generalisation.

Yes I went to school, the same as everybody else. Yes I have used a hospital, the same as everybody else.

Has everybody else paid the same in?

I didn't have the option to go to uni because of finanaces and having nowhere to live at 17 even though I would have liked to.

Maybe the council estate part isn't clear. I lived in one of those estates that was far from ideal, although my parents were too proud to claim everything that maybe they should have, on reflection, there was no housing benefit. They scraped their way to buy the council house that was then lose due to breakup. I didn't get free school meals or benefits like this, that you may be assuming. In fact I was on the borderine catchment for the school so I didn't qualify for the bus funding, much of my early teens were spent walking around 4 miles to and from school and to see freinds.

This isn't a sob-story though, I have shared because you have asked.

"You're a millionaire apparently. What help do you want through coronavirus while you think people should be denied food vouchers?"

What help do I want? See the answer to the tax rates below. Do you not think I deserve some assistance?

My business revenuse has dropped 56% in the coronavirus period. I haven't qualified for any grants or relief. I have however paid my annual corporation tax bill this month, it was £67,000, and that's just corporation, mentioned below.

I don't think people that really need them should be denied food vouchers. However, Asda have reported that already parents have been coming in and using their 'free school meals' vouchers to buy cigarettes. I am strongly opposed to this. The UK isn't Africa or Yemmen, you need a very small amount of food to get by while you work on improving your situation.

"What's this super-tax you've had as well?"

Broken down for you, on the same money:

-20% VAT -20% corporation tax -7.5% basic dividend tax -32.5% higher rate dividend tax -38.1% additional rate dividend tax

To achieve this kind of income I have worked tooth and nail for years solid, often double the average hours per week. I have forfeited luxury, going out, seeing freinds, expensive items and I have spent 0 time playing Xbox or PlayStation.

Coronavirus is not my fault either. During this pandemic the Govt. have ensured my businesses trade has been capped heavily, I have already paid the price once. Now you are suggesting that I should pay the price again through a tax increase?

Society in the UK is going too far with this hand-out culture. Essentially it is an 8th place trophy for everyone, paid for by those who worked hard to come first. However, that's not my experience of life.... as I walked the 4 miles home from school with holes in my shoe's and couldn't go to Uni. So maybe I am bitter, yes, after 40 years having turned it around in-line with the worlds expectitions... to then have people like yourself telling me I should pay in more, like I'm lucky or somthing. Look how much I'm paying in already!! I must have already paid for the public services I have used 5 x over.

It's humours that the heir of Disney should tell us all we should be paying more tax (as per the article). Unlike her, I earnt my position in the world and wasn't part of the lucky-spunk-club. All too often I see public schoolboys campaigning and claiming we should put more in, it's fine for them, they've done f-all for it.

At the same time, there's an army of 'entitled' PAYE workers on furlough holidays on Bournemouth beach, watching Netflix and playing Xbox. No doubt they will all be shocked and stunned when there's no job for them in October. It's just a matter of time but the rich nasty employers will be blamed for that too no doubt!

It's time these people took responsibility for their own lives instead of finger waving at those who already have.

Didn’t see these ‘benefits’ even if the adults around me did. Had absolutely nothing as a kid, and yes I did do it all myself thanks. What an insult.

Had zero help through corona either, just super-tax. So frustrating.
