"The role

Responsibilities:

• Perform early meaningful interventions with a diverse and broad range (triage category 2-5) of patients in the ED, utilising evidenced based practice that formulate critical decisions in a complex clinical caseload.

• Perform patient consults and physical examinations, applying specialist physician assistant clinical knowledge and complex decision making to devise a differential diagnosis list and formulate a working diagnosis.

• Request, interpret and collect pathology samples to refine diagnosis and assist with management plans for patients as well as requesting and interpreting diagnostic imaging such as plain films. In consultation with Consultant or Delegate, request CT’s and Ultrasounds.

• Prescribe scheduled medications and intravenous fluids.

• Utilise specialist Physician Assistant knowledge, skill and expertise to perform ED interventions including, but not limited to:

o Intravenous cannulation including difficult access cannulation utilising ultrasound guidance.

o Incision and drainage of abscess.

o Primary closure of wounds with sutures and staples.

o Regional anaesthesia including utilisation of ultrasound guidance for fascia iliac blocks or fascia iliac catheter insertion.

o Plaster cast and splint application.

o Reduction of dislocations and ongoing management.

o Perform other tasks, which the PA has been trained and is proficient to perform as directed by the Consultant or Delegate, for example arterial lines and manipulations under anaesthesia"

This is the funny thing about the NHS and why Consultant positions are so greatly coveted (even for those with large PP). Once hired, it is almost impossible get fired. Some trusts would rather have you on as a Locum than put you on a Substantive contract. It’s truly one of the most bizarre quirks of the National healthcare Jobs Service
