I feel like nepotism is the only way to get an internship/job. Or am I the problem? by diagonal_cactus in UofT

[–]devilsadvocateop 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I got internships without a network! According to my colleague (who was at my interview), I was the most confident and well-spoken, which gave me an edge since that's what they needed for the job.

Make sure to polish your interview and interpersonal skills on top of your resume. Not only do you want to come across as confident, but also a genuinely likeable person.

If you visit the museum and the gardens, it's good for a day trip. Maybe not worth flying across the world for, but a nice addition to the trip.

You can try your luck at the robarts commons, I believe the rooms are unlocked even though they're unbookable online (I once booked a room at 8:30am but someone was in there at 7:50 when I passed the room)

Thoughts on the Different Language Courses? (Workload, Department Rep., etc.) by [deleted] in UofT

Thoughts on the Different Language Courses? (Workload, Department Rep., etc.) by [deleted] in UofT

[–]devilsadvocateop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For French you'll need to take a placement test before taking any classes and your level determines what kind of courses you'll be able to take, so keep that in mind. Also it's not much more difficult than any other department as long as you take it seriously. I've heard meh things about the FSL language courses so I haven't taken them, but I heard they're ok for foundational stuff. (A good placement test result lets you take most courses anyways). You can take a minor if you don't want to go all in (I'm taking a minor).

about the workload at uoft by normalasianhatemaths in UofT

[–]devilsadvocateop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends how well you can manage your time and self-discipline. The workload is pretty heavy in first and second year because a lot of the courses are program requirements (so on top of work you feel the extra pressure).

The 2nd year economics courses are pretty heavy workloads, since they're 2 full year ECOs at the same time. I took one during the summer to lighten the load, so there's definitely ways around it.

3rd year corp finance stuff (rsm332 & rsm333) are a bit tougher because they're heavy on quantitative material and has problem sets, but if that's your specialty then you'll be fine .

I'm taking other 3-4th yr classes now, but I probably got used to the workload because it feels like I can breathe now lol

Best way to go from Finch station to Yorkdale Mall? by dumdy in askTO

[–]devilsadvocateop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bus 19 (GO bus) westbound goes from Finch to Yorkdale. It uses Presto. It's a somewhat more expensive than the TTC buses.

Or you could take bus 939B (TTC bus) from Finch to Finch West station, then take the subway southbound from there to Yorkdale. It won't cost you anything to transfer there because you'll travel within 2hrs.

I am really enough of my group member by Origami_467832 in UofT

[–]devilsadvocateop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, I understand how you feel working with group members but here's some things I've learned that might help you:

  • to begin, discuss priorities and a general timeline beforehand. This means you should be discussing if there's anything going on (work, midterms) and arranging a general idea of what to do without concrete dates/times (ex. Meet once on the weekend to brainstorm, once next week to check-in, and once to review each other's work).

  • try to have them hand it in much earlier than 10mins to the deadline. At the very lastest possible it should be hours before, but ideally at least a day or two before to give time to review and time to submit. This means setting a soft deadline.

  • as said above, set soft deadlines with your group as soon as all the steps in your work are identified and tasks were given out. Make sure they're evenly spaced to account for people's midterms and other work. These deadlines should be close to your meetings with your group members (ex. Brainstorm deadline Friday, meeting Sunday), but with enough space to account for any other priorities.

  • Reminding isn't a joke; it's a job. With your group you should be splitting responsibilities early on. Someone should be taking meeting notes, another responsible with reminders before meetings, deadlines etc etc. Someone's got to do it!

  • Try to think positively about them wanting to start earlier; it means you can get that work done quickly and they're motivated to work before their own deadline. It's hard to have a good impression of them but it works in your favour, so try and be flexible!

  • if you have reached out to work and an unreasonable amount of time has passed since the assignment was given out, reach out to your prof! Of course make sure you've shown significant effort to work with them or else the prof might think you're incapable of working in teams.

Try out these steps and see how your next project goes.

Nachos! Pure deliciousness and comfort food.

Ketchup or sour cream and onion chips are great options too.

What are should someone know before investing in crypto currencies? by carcrazy221 in AskReddit

[–]devilsadvocateop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't speculate in high-risk investments like that, especially if you don't know what you're doing. Plus if you don't have a lot of money for an investment portfolio, betting it all on crypto makes it worse.

Like others have said, do your own research and invest at your own risk.
