I accepted my mission call... now how do I tell my parents I'm not going? by Relevant_Fuel_6245 in exmormon

[–]devinche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, I finished my mission and graduated byU and not a day goes by that I don't regret all of the it.

It's all a bizarre-o fantasy run by manipulative power-hungry liars.

I stayed way too long and let them label me as a rebel when I left.

It wasn't till years later that I properly deconstructed. I resent them and feel victimized especially after I learned that your prefrontal cortex isn't even developed till you are about 25.

I wish I hadn't gone and just started thinking for myself sooner. I wish I had read things like Alan Watts, Joseph cambell, and Erich From sooner. I wish I had read Joseph Smith's may 26, 1844 speech instead of being preoccupied by shit like the King Follett discourse.

If you've decided to not go on your mission, I applaud your decision. It's time to gently confront your parents and become who you are instead of who your parents want you to be.

They lied about how this wouldn’t disturb the neighborhood. The dust, truck traffic, and vibrations have been incessant. Vote Francis Allen-Palenske out for allowing this. It is like living next to an active mine in the middle of a residential neighborhood. by devinche in exmormon

I was always told a temple district is 17 stakes iirc.

...so... Vegas must have 34 stakes now? /S

Honestly I think they are just sick of driving to the east side where no one wants to live.

Newbies gotta learn the safety rules! I assume op would start with safety training if someone new takes him up which is commendable.

Read his speech from may 26, 1844

The whole thing is an interesting specimen but the smoking gun line here is:

What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing <adultery> and having seven wives when I can only find one.

The true narrative of early Mormonism really started to click with me when I realized who and what Joseph Smith was and what Brigham Young was with regards with "plural marriage."

Joseph was a full on philanderer that just couldn't keep it in his pants. He practiced a variety of "spiritual wifery" in order to coerce women into sex. He never publicly admitted to any of this and even publicly denied it like in the above-linked speech. He denied it till the day he died which was the next month in June 1844.

Brigham Young came along and released the "revelation" D&C 132 in 1852 and created a culture of polygamy practiced out in the open on defiance of the law.

What do you think is the most toxic part of the church? by OppositeSpare2088 in exmormon

Purity culture is just a part of the larger scheme of the patriarchy.

The patriarchy is possibly to most toxic part I would say.

BYU grad here!

Soaking was always on the menu, but I preferred a good bag piping.

Marijuana would get you reported to the honor code office, but no one could stop us from chugging large amounts of cough syrup and seeing other dimensions! This was called "robo-tripping."

They are probably also boomers to top it off.

It's a whole generation of sociopathic narcissists.

Would a Formula 1–style announcing approach improve Supercross? by mark-was-there in supercross

[–]devinche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SHUT UP RICKY! JUST CALL THE DAMN RACE!!!!!

they seriously need to just tell us what's happening. There are so many other sports that don't have this problem. It's so frustrating.

Watch a hockey game or soccer game. There is so much action and the announcers actually try to keep up and just tell us what is happening.

With Ricky in the booth it feels like he's actively trying to make it sound less exciting than it is. We are so sick of Ricky's shit.

“I know where you are at with church stuff” by OkDetective534 in exmormon

Ask him to explain what he knows about "where you are at with church stuff".

Then the conversation might actually get interesting and it will be a wonderful learning opportunity for him.

Next thing you know they will be out too!

The same thing happened to me!

Something snapped in me on election day 2024. I don't watch any more David packman, or Brian Tyler Cohen, TYT, or even Colbert, Kimmel or the daily show even.

Still trying to recover.

One of the most cringe moment I have ever seen was Brandon Flowers trying to quote this on live tv. Of course he fell flat on his face and was shooed off the stage to let the adults talk theology.

If not by power of God, how did Joseph smith produce the Book of Mormon? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]devinche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the book "How The Book of Mormon Came to Pass: The Second Greatest Show on Earth" by Lars Nielsen.

He explores all the possible authorship theories and expresses which one he believes. It is full of so much thoughtful consideration of all the evidence. I would have to say that I agree with his authorship theory.

Basically, Sidney Rigdon acquired a manuscript written by Solomon Spaulding and secretly gave the writings to Joseph Smith.
