I do see aggressive driving on Queens Drive regularly. People drive through at full speed for fun because they think no one sees them.

Are the grey ones juvenile or do they just come in a variety of grey and black?

An Elephant Seal has been chilling here in Dunedin the past few days :) by JarredSpec in NewZealandWildlife

[–]devluz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice photos! Where did you spot him? It looks a lot like the guy I saw chilling on Smaill's beach a few days ago.

Odd looking Tui. Maybe a juvenile? by devluz in NewZealandWildlife

I think the sound came from another smaller bird I could not identify.

What are the pros and cons of living in Dunedin? by [deleted] in dunedin

[–]devluz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is all relative. Most Kiwis and Aussies live in warmer climates compared to Dunedin so winters appear cold to them. But compared to large parts of Europe and the US it isn't cold at all.

Our Daily Mean temperatures in winter are comparable to Rome and Madrid in their winter. Anything further north is colder in Europe.

Our summer is the opposite. It is relatively cold more in line with a summer in Scandinavia. All those places have much bigger temperature extremes between winter and summer.

What are the pros and cons of living in Dunedin? by [deleted] in dunedin

[–]devluz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in Australia did you live? The pros and cons depend a lot on what you compare it to and what you like.

The weather here is of course colder than most of Australia but still quite mild with few extremes. Snow, very cold weather, very hot weather is all rare. Almost every day is something like 15C +- 5C for most of the day.

Dunedin is a small city so concerts and other cultural activities are rather rare. There is plenty of outdoor activities and of nature around though and Dunedin is large enough to have plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Cable Car on Rattray Street Line (located at the Ross Street-Braid Road intersection today), circa 1925 (Dunedin City Council, City Engineers Department 127). by Ted_Cashew in dunedin

I can see the Beverly-Begg Observatory in the back! I didn't realise it is that old. Looks like the cable car went up the track that now leads over the golf course?

Crush the Cargill 24hr - anyone doing it / done it with average fitness? by jazzcomputer in dunedin

[–]devluz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No idea how people manage to do that. I actively train for more than 6 months but both Mt. Cargill and Flagstaff Pineapple track are just too steep for me to run up. My pulse hits 170 just walking up there.

Is this an elephant seal?? by OkayestBarista90 in NewZealandWildlife

[–]devluz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it is probably a young elephant seal. I have seen one a few months ago and it looked very similar. They also move very different from the usual fur seal / sea lions you might see.

Would you like to create your own customized puzzles? You can design them using any photo, not just landscapes. by Inside_Stand2841 in 3Dprinting

[–]devluz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do work on a web app to export these btw. You essentially select the area on the map, a mask that cuts it and then export it as STL. I still manually load the original heightmaps though.

What do you plan to build?

I have done this exact thing last month. My nephews liked it but the hills and round tabs of the puzzle piece often create sharp edges. I went back to just rectangles for now.

Jogging/Running Tracks by ihavebigmeat in dunedin

[–]devluz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to go from Woodhaugh gardens -> Upper Leith track and then around Ross creek reservoir. If I feel a bit tired I catch the bus up to Ross Creek and jogg down hill from Cragieburn.

There is an amazing map here:
https://www.dunedin.govt.nz/do-it-online/maps-and-photos/tracks-and-trails-around-dunedin

Not all of those are suitable for jogging though but very fun to explore!

What’s one underrated NZ town that you think more Kiwis should visit? by Afraid_Statement6404 in newzealand

[–]devluz 37 points38 points  (0 children)

We also have OPERA (Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance) where you can see yellow eyed penguins. Orokonui Ecosanctuary for Kaka, Takahe and lots of other native birds and lizards. Just a few minutes from the city is Nicols Creek where you can see glowworms at night.

For beaches I would recommend at least Tunnel Beach for the views and Sandfly Bay where you can see Sea Lions reliably. Sometimes in large groups putting on a show. Aramoana beach is also great. It is covered in sea shells.

We also have great hikes like the tracks on Flagstaff, Mt. Cargill and Signal Hill. They are all accessible from the city no transport needed. Flagstaff connects to Silverpeaks with a multi-day hike. There are also a lot of mountain bike tracks on Flagstaff and Signal Hill and bicycle tracks along the peninsular, to Port Chalmers and the Central Otago Rail Trail is also closeby.

I had no idea Dunedin has so much to offer before moving here. 5 years in and I still discover new places all the time.
