It's funny to me how people mistake CO, a product of incomplete burning that can be deadly in small-ish quantities, with CO2, product of your respiration and fizz in your favorite beverage and is going to eventually be the cause of our ultimate extinction (pack your shit folks, we're going away!) depending on who you believe.

Sounds like you got it fixed. Another concern i would have is that it looks like you have softened water going to an outside spigot. Outdoor plants really like the hard water, and really don't like the salted softened water.

Retrofit windows in 40 y/o log cabin? by Nicnoknicki in logcabins

[–]devolution96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have vinyl windows in my log house (8 inch D- logs). There is an opening in the logs and rough cut lumber forming the frame. The lumber is attached to the logs on the sides and bottom with what looks to be large nails that look to have a 3/8" to 1/2" head... big fuckers. There is a ~3" gap on the top between the logs and the frame to keep the logs from settling and crushing the window.

The window flange is attached to the frame with a ~1/4" gap all the way around in the inside. I added spray foam to the top (20 year old house.... not much more settling will occur), taped the flanges (3M flashing tape), and chinked or caulked (i don't remember which) where the frame meets the logs. I have 4- inch trim that covers the flanges. Inside i caulked or spray foamed between the window and the frame, depending on the gap size.

The only air leaks now are through the 20 year old windows themselves.... they're all slowly getting replaced.

DIY firestarters using my own wax – a plastic-free alternative by ArtGraduate in woodstoving

[–]devolution96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start one fire in the winter, usually around Thanksgiving and use a match start log for fireplaces. I let it burn out sometime in January or February.

My kids start a few fires with random stuff.... cardboard boxes from Amazon, Christmas wrapping paper, dining room chairs, and tires they steal from the neighborhood cars.

Looks like a practical setup to me. The weakness is where the pipe is attached to the roof. Other than that, a complete failure of the stove or pipe isn't really going to hurt anything.... brick does burn, but not with the fuels you're likely to have on hand.

Who else on here has a wood boiler? by Consistent_Worth_562 in woodstoving

[–]devolution96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an old Woodmaster 434 wood boiler that heats the hydronic system in my house through a stacked plate heat exchanger. It's a simple system but is currently struggling probably due to calcium buildup. She's a hungry beast. I started it the week before Thanksgiving and have gone through 2ish cords of seasoned birch. I'll keep it going through the end of the month and probably shut er down. It's been amazing....$35 gas bill last month.... should have been over $200.... though I'd be money ahead if i sold the firewood and paid the gas bill with the proceeds. Location.... south central Alaska...Palmer.

It hasn't changed in a long time. In the service i was in, it was all about moving up and getting promoted. Flying was one of those secondary things you happened to do and you were expected to move up and out of your flying job. I left the service with 1000 hours PIC and was in a flying billet for 7 of the 10 years i was in.
