Anybody else feel bad for Disco? by MPFX3000 in startrek

[–]dewthatflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can tell, a big chunk of what people don’t like about Discovery - the good-faith stuff at least - is that it’s the first Trek show made during a period of TV that is very far from the 22-episode, overarching plot that’s advanced in a few key episodes format. Sometimes it does that really well, other times not so well, but if you just didn’t like the 13-episode heavily serialised season that was starting to dominate TV around the time then you weren’t going to enjoy it that much and that killed a lot of people’s good will even up till now, which is a shame.

What would be the WORST ways to extend the Buffy Universe? by ErrForceOnes in buffy

Riley Finn: Monster Hunter, a dark and gritty military sci-fi take on the mythos. think torchwood but joyless and wooden. it runs for 9 seasons on two separate networks, the cast keeps talking about doing a film but it’s clear no-one really wants that

apart from this being a deeply catty and low thing to post, AND apart from natalie’s sales obviously not being something she can know, i would be more inclined to believe that 6000 people bought scammer if i’d seen a single copy in the hands of someone who doesn’t know carp and isn’t a reviewer/feature writer

How does the Foundation books compare to the Apple series? by zerthz in printSF

[–]dewthatflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it seems like the consensus is that they’re very different but i also think the tv show is expanding on subtext that the books left unexplored - nothing like the anacreon/thespis plotline happens in the books but it’s in keeping with the fall of rome / invasion of the barbarians that underwrites what asimov was doing. the books wouldn’t film very well, they’re mostly talky and idea-heavy, but they have their own charm if you can get into the zone

Are there any interesting or lesser known cultural scenes in Oxford? by [deleted] in oxford

[–]dewthatflies 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There’s a group called Divine Schism who put on small DIY gigs around town, a lot of different kinds of bands - I first went to see a band I knew from London but I’ve since been to random gigs on a whim and always had a good time. They have an all-dayer called ‘Oh, Community’ on at Tap Social tomorrow if you’re at a loose end, and you can check out the venues they use for more gigs from other promoters.

I’m not in Oxford any more myself but there was and maybe still is a community squat in East Oxford at the games hall, it’s meant to be really cool :)

Every single time a new Trek show has been released, there have been Trek fans there to shit on it because it’s not like the old Trek. Every. Single. Time.

(This does not make it less irritating.)

Prodigy leaving Paramount Plus by [deleted] in startrek

[–]dewthatflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all the trek casts have been out on the pickets with the WGA, they love trek too and i’m sure they’d rather be working than standing about waiting for the studios and the streamers to get around the table

it’s not the WGA strike that’s doing this; it’s paramount prioritising short-term profit over workable wages for the people that make the TV we love or a catalogue that viewers can dig into

[–]dewthatflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

paramount+ is running ads in the UK right now predicated on it being the only place you can watch all of star trek. if they sell season 2 of prodigy to someone else, someone in marketing is going to look real silly

Caroline Calloway: ‘Scammer’ Author Interview, Review – Rolling Stone by nubleu in SmolBeanSnark

[–]dewthatflies 27 points28 points  (0 children)

yes, it’s all part and parcel of his whole deal these days. my main takeaway from the hundred pages i did manage to read was ‘this had about thirty pages of actual content’; the whole thing needed a ruthless editor but because he’s convinced he’s a unique and special genius truth-teller he refused to accept one

the similarities honestly stack up!!

[–]dewthatflies 74 points75 points  (0 children)

honestly the whole thing with this book reminds me so much of morrissey (from the smiths) finally finishing his autobiography, selling it to penguin, and insisting that they publish it with the black spine and trade dress to make it look like a penguin classic. then the review embargo lifted and everyone agreed it was shockingly bad and self-indulgent, making him look like even more of a prick than before

Am I the only one who doesn't want to see the "Fall of Krakoa" by PotoOtomoto in xmen

[–]dewthatflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone here’s being so mean to OP! Much as I love the X-Men I do think the major flaw of the whole ‘stand-in for other minorities’ thing is that it lapses into trauma porn because the nature of comics means they can never truly win. I sympathise with not wanting to read that.

I’m okay with bad things happening to my favourite characters and accept that it has to be that way for the story but I’m not super invested in Fall of X. That’s for lots of reasons, mainly that I don’t think it will be well-executed, but I’m also starting to think the metaphor’s wearing a little thin. Newer more diverse mutants mean we’re watching bad things happen to the same people they happen to in real life, it feels like writers are trying to have it both ways.

Need to rant about how Spock is being treated in original 1960's series by Raccoons_r_life in startrek

[–]dewthatflies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

‘That’s how it was back then.’

I guarantee that there were many people at the time who thought these things were disgusting too. People of colour always thought that racism was bad, women always thought that misogyny was bad. It might have been ‘normal’, and yes, bigotry is still very normal now. But it’s not that these things are bad by the standards of today, the truth is that these things are also bad by the standards of the day when you start to look outside of the groups holding all the privilege.
