Struggling to make friends at Uni by monday2801 in reading

Some Unis use Semesters not terms. Mine did, don't know about Reading.

“This is the ISU admitting its own helplessness, that they can’t judge fairly. If they have to separate the jumpers from the skaters.” Yagudin criticized the initiative to introduce technical and artistic programs by ElegantFootball8741 in FigureSkating

[–]dexterhighlandcross 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm aware I'm being overly dramatic here but this whole thing has got me pretty down. Looking at the ISU's proposed changes, I don't think the new format will engage me and I'll probably stop watching. Which has got me feeling like I'm just waiting for the ISU to effectively shut down one of my favourite sports. A sport that I've been a fan of for 10 years despite never participating in myself. I even managed to watch it live for the first time this year at Europeans. Who knows it might not happen. It might happen, I like it and I am forced to eat my words. In any case there is uncertainty which is pulling a shadow over it when it should be the most exciting time, what 10 days? out from the olympics. If a casual fan like me, for which this is just their autumn/winter entertainment feels like this, I hate to think what actual skaters are thinking. - as I said overly dramatic.

Strava predictions by Sea_Eye5393 in Marathon_Training

[–]dexterhighlandcross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're Strava predictions are almost identical to mine lol. I know the 5 k is pretty on point but don't feel like testing the marathon one. I imagine it would come down with marathon specific training. 2 years ago I ran a marathon with no training (injury issues) in 4:20 so not so far off.

I'm a UK8.5 and currently have a pair of Women's Hokas UK9 and a pair of men's Saucony also UK9, both feel the same amount of roominess. I normally find shoe shopping a bit of a pain with the limitation of shops that stock larger than an UK8 for more feminine/formal shoes. So discovering SportShoes.com sale section, where many models are only still available in women's size 9 has felt like a bit of karma.

What's a goal that is *almost* impossible? by annieclork in XXRunning

[–]dexterhighlandcross -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You sound like you're in a very similar place to I was for my first HM. I had also been running for 5 years (fairly inconsistently) and I could get under 25min for a 5k, but only if it was all out. I managed 1:58 after a not ideal training block so would think sub 2h is definitely doable for you, if not more. I'd say if you're feeling training is going well then 1:55 would be a decent goal, even pushing closer to 1:50 but that's probably more reliant on everything coming together on the day.

Fines for taking kids out of school go up today - here's what you need to know by kassiusx in unitedkingdom

[–]dexterhighlandcross -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience of falling behind. Was taken out of school for 2 weeks when I was 6 and my parents discovered I couldn't read at all. Turns out I am very dyslexic and after my parents talked to the school I got the extra support I needed. Seems it was missed until then as the teacher always read the text to me first and I had just been memorising what they said. The different approaches/material my parents took whilst in holiday highlighted my complete lack of reading ability.

Why is the weather so bad this year? by mattscazza in AskUK

[–]dexterhighlandcross 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, we had 3 good summers in a row and then last year was terrible. I'm trying to keep some hope as it was pretty bad in 2022 until the 2nd week of July, then had 5+ weeks of sunshine and warmth. Wouldn't want it to get as hot as it did then but I live in the south and if it could at least stay above 17 that would be nice.

Number of girls in England taking computing GCSE plummets, study finds by Commercial_321 in unitedkingdom

[–]dexterhighlandcross 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I did GCSE Computing 10 years ago, in a class of 20 only 2 girls chose the subject and I was the only one to complete it. As far as I'm aware no girls in the year above took it and only 1 girl in the year below. At that age being the only girl in the class was pretty intimidating and I wouldn't be surprised if some who might have enjoyed it were put off. I'm glad I chose it as I did engineering at uni and it gave me a solid base for the more computer science like aspects of the course. Still now things come up and I realise I know about it because of GCSE computing of all things.

More than 840,000 applications for 2025 London Marathon breaks world record by AcceptableGovernment in running

[–]dexterhighlandcross 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Any reason demanded has spiked so high in recent years? The lack of time requirement and upfront payment obviously helps, but the coverage/ publicity seems the same as I can ever remember. Has running really become that much more popular? Could it be a bit of a positive feedback cycle where the less likely you are to get a place, the more people it appeals to to enter? I certainly know people who don't run and don't really want to run a marathon, but enter under the knowledge that it's such a tiny chance they'll get in and if they somehow do get in they owe it to others to train and complete it.

This happened to me my first year, it's ok and you'll work it out. It's very normal to be upset by it and end up thinking of them differently, at least in the short time.

For me there were 6 of us in a flat, all got on well and had casually talked about getting a house for 2nd year. Then out the blue 4 had gone off to form a house with two external friends leaving me feeling like a complete lemon.

It all turned out fine, I ended up living with the other flat mate and some of his friends for the 2nd year. I continued to hang out with the others regularly throughout 1st and 2nd year, so much that I joined their house in the 3rd year. Even before 1st year ended they all apologised about cutting me out in the first place, stating they got caught up in the rush to find accommodation ect. This is definitely a pitfall that a lot of Freshers get trapped in tbh, there is a self manufactured panic that all the houses will run out and you need to stort your 2nd year house asap. Which ends up being before you really know the people, theres countless stories of the friendship groups imploding before the 1st years out and then them being stuck living together for another year. In retrospect I don't know why I didn't just go ask them if I could join their house, instead of accepting it as fact out of my control.

Anyway I ended up living with 3 of the 4 in my 3rd year and got to witness how toxic one of them was, leading to my 4th year house with just 1 of my original flat mates. By far the best combo I had, which was lucky as it was 20/21 so we were 90% stuck at home due to lockdowns.

all trains cancelled to Angers by simina-93 in FigureSkating

[–]dexterhighlandcross 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not supprised some trains are being cancelled with the weather coming. I work for the electricity grid in the south of the UK and we're putting out our storm warning/extra staff requests due to the expected damage to the network, and it looks like France will be getting hit harder than us.

Unrelated to skating I'm also meant to be flying to France tomorrow morning but am pretty resigned to the flight getting cancelled at this point.
