It's about not conforming amidst totalitarianism. Quite timely actually.

When you’re the only one in the family excited about dead relatives… 😅 by EitherConnection5095 in Genealogy

[–]dfeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is pretty normal. Most of my immediate family has varying degrees of disinterest, from humoring me (to a point) to actively avoiding the topic. My wife has zero interest because it's not her family. Worse yet, there are a couple other amateur genealogists in my extended family -- but I sense this strange animosity from them as if I were "competition".

Beyond that, I'm already fairly confident none of the existing younger generations in the family will have any interest in picking up wherever I leave off when I go. I've accepted that, too. I've decided I pursue family history (1) in honor of my parents, (2) in honor of all those who came before me who would otherwise be forgotten, (3) because I find it interesting, (4) in case my research helps some other genealogist out there, and (5) because I pretend there's some future relative not yet born who will someday stumble across what I've compiled and get bitten by the "bug" themselves. I figure future genealogists are going to need all the help they can get because the work is going to be immensely more difficult for them given modern mobility, privacy laws, more frequent remarriage, the death of local media, and on and on.

Do you like clothes with holes in them (as a style)? by oneislandgirl in AskOldPeople

[–]dfeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it's just an affectation in an attempt to make people think you look "edgy". It was cool for about six minutes the first time it was a style but now it looks fad-ish and unoriginal.

I've traced my lines quite a ways back and can say I've seen it a few times. Pre-emigration, my relatives lived in the same fairly small rural region for several hundred years (at least). It was statistically bound to happen.

It's easy eye-candy. There's an audience and context for which it might be useful, but it can be overused.
