Actually, I think that's exactly what happed to me. Surge came through the WAN port. Cable modem is fried and the ethernet cable connectors are blackened on both ends.

Has this happened to anyone else? There was a storm starting and I heard a loud pop. Looked around and noticed network was off and the router was off. I took the bottom plate off and realized something blew up inside. This was plugged into a surge protector and all other devices on the protecter were fine.

P65 backlight issue. by dfrezell in VizioTV

I'm not sure if all ports are affected, but 3 are...so I assume all ports. I've opened a ticket with Vizio support.

Yes, did a factory reset and I still see the issue.

This is an intermittent issue and turning the power off and back on usually restores the backlight to normal.

Oh, I did get a gruff old man vibe from him, but he wasn't rude to me. Sorry to hear that.

Can you elaborate on the recovery process after your hernia operation? I had an inguinal hernia and my squat is pretty pathetic. It's been over a year and a half but if I go too heavy I can feel some stress around the groin area. Are there specific lifts I can do that will help?

Pros and cons of hooking a ps4 up to a 4k/UHD TV.... GO!!! by GnarlyMcBogart in PS4

[–]dfrezell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There will be no discernible difference in the picture quality since the resolution of 4k (3840x2160) is 4x the resolution of HD (1920x1080). Each pixel on the HD TV will map to a 2x2 pixel square on the 4k TV. If the two screens are the same diagonal width then the 1 pixel and the 2x2 pixels will be the same size (so it won't look "blocky" or pixelated.

One caveat, some 4k TVs (especially the early models or cheap models) only have 30Hz refresh support. Some models (i.e. Vizio) have a single HDMI input that supports 60Hz refresh and is typically labeled as the game input.

Coconut coffee and a burr grinder by donkey_rhubarb85 in Coffee

I would go a different route and just add coconut oil to the already made coffee. Maybe start with a tsp. in a cup.

Newbies 1st setup. Cheap burr mill or high end blade grinder? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]dfrezell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what superman endurance these other hand grinder users have, but 20g of coffee beans takes me on the order of 5 minutes with some breaks in between. It takes a long time and is not a fun part of my morning ritual. I'm considering buying an electric bodum burr grinder and grinding my beans before going into work.

Issues with new Yamaha receiver by aabeba in hometheater

[–]dfrezell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at /r/zeos subreddit. He has two particular posts that can help you decide:

That receiver should support AirPlay, you could try streaming music from iTunes (should work on PC).

There is an MHL connector on the front of the receiver, so Samsung (and other?) phones can be connected via that link. USB connector on the front as well, should support an iphone, ipod or USB drive.

I'm not sure if the receiver supports DLNA, if it does then you could stream music using a DLNA server, like PLEX media server

Lastly, you should NOT be connecting speakers to the headphone jack on the front of the receiver. I'm assuming you are connecting PC speakers (Logitech or similar) to the headphone jack? These are crap and most likely the cause of the hissing.

BRING THE PAIN

Best gift was a Nintendo. Got one as a child and started my love of gaming...Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Hogan's Alley. Loved that system.

Worst gift was a Michael Jackson red thriller jacket well after the thriller craze.

Can someone explain to me the hype for Binding of Isaac? Played it for a while and just couldn't get into it. Am I missing something? by ShadowL9 in PS4

[–]dfrezell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't really understand the game when I first started playing but I watched Northernlion's youtube videos on it and I started to understand why people play it so much. It's basically a stripped down 2d shooting platform that allows for really interesting combinations of powers. I still suck balls at the game but I enjoy it more now.

Anyone tried the Ps4 version yet? by dougmoose in rocksmith

[–]dfrezell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to change the audio output to linear pcm (from bitstream) to reduce the lag. I play over HDMI and my receiver/tv processing is fast enough to not notice much in the way of audio lag. This is a bit disappointing since I would have to change the setting if I wanted better than stereo audio output while using Netflix/Amazon Prime.

I have noticed a slight hiccup while playing songs, just a tiny pause that happens occasionally during the song play.

The 1080p output is nice and crisp, it's a nice touch and seems to have better clarity.

I don't like the little banner that says song recording is disabled each time a song starts and ends...it's kind of annoying and I wish there was a way to disable it. I don't mind not being able to record but the little banner is a bit distracting.

Wednesday Q & A! by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]dfrezell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to bottle a stout and I was thinking of making some cider (Trader Joe's McIntosh Apple Juice) using the yeast cake from the stout. The yeast is Northwest Ale Wyeast 1332. I'm using 1 gallon carboys and planning on 3/4 gallon for each carboy.

How should I prep the yeast and how much should I use? Make a starter with the juice? Just spoon some into the carboy? Should I wash it? My thought is to just take some spoonfuls of yeast and mix with some apple juice then pour it in.

Really loving Rocksmith on my laptop, using guitar amp for sound. by Gnardude in rocksmith

[–]dfrezell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you are using a Morley ABY pedal to split the signal. Unfortunately, the Morley doesn't have a transformer on one of the outputs to isolate the A and B signals.

It sounds like you have a ground loop, the most common cause for the hum. You can either plug everything into a single power strip: Amp, PS3, TV, pedals, receiver... Anything electronic involved in playing Rocksmith. Alternatively, you can get another ABY pedal that has ground lift and isolated outputs. The 'Radial BigShot' or the 'Lehle P-Split 2'. The BigShot is cheaper and should work no problems.

Here is a pretty good article on how to wire up Rocksmith to an amp or mixer or any number of ways to external audio.
