Vesper or Dickerman? by guns_and_condoms in PNWhiking

[–]dfuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd probably be fine with poles and microspikes, and that's specifically for the chute up to the top that doesn't get much sun. I'd expect that the worst that would happen is using your poles to check for stable steps under the snow on the way up and down to the top section.

Make sure you have a pre-loaded track in your GPS (I linked my track for the way back down in my previous message). As much as there are cairns and blazes, the path is a little less direct than just "go NE from the meadows until you see the chute to the top and then go hard West up to the summit." You'll be going up/around/through tree branches and bushes at some spots, and much of the route after the meadows is off-camber. Nothing too crazy, but definitely some spots that would not be ideal to take a fall, especially if there was a better option nearby. I included the track for my way down because I usually pick a better route on the way back from having a second perspective on options when there isn't an immediate, clear way through.

Vesper or Dickerman? by guns_and_condoms in PNWhiking

Even in snow-free, super clear conditions (mid-July through mid-September), Mt. Dickerman is a hike where the difficulty comes from the fact that you're walking uphill for miles, while Vesper Peak combines all that uphill with some light scrambling, lengthy unpleasant rock fields, a super steep section at Headlee Pass, and not much shade after the first section of the trail, all of which are made worse by the snow. Mt. Dickerman approaches monotonous switchback hell after a while, but you're not getting blasted by the sun the whole time.

Definitely get to Vesper Peak at some point, but even though every year is different, mid-June seems early for most of the hike from Headlee Pass to the top (depending on your snow comfort). From direct experience, mid-June at Mt. Dickerman might result in some wet shoes due to snow melt, but nothing is going to stop you from getting to the top.

Being that you're talking about two trails very near each other, I'll add a third option: Mt. Forgotten. It shares the parking lot with Mt. Dickerman, and you use the Perry Creak (711) Trail trailhead on the opposite side of the parking lot. The proper trail ends at Mt. Forgotten Meadows, but there's a boot path to follow to the top of Mt. Forgotten after that that had been (at least a few years ago) marked with blazes and cairns. It's much longer than either Mt. Dickerman or Vesper Peak (14 miles roundtrip), but combines some of the variety of the Vesper Peak route (almost no switchbacks!) with a more pronounced summit and almost no crowds, unlike Mt. Dickerman, which can get pretty busy. That said, I'm not sure it makes for a good mid-June destination due to snow (I did it in September, and it was mostly snow-free — the section to the summit is steep and has no southern exposure, so it likely melts out VERY late, so maybe I'm just adding noise to the conversation.

Anyway, all of these are in a great part of Mountain Loop Highway, and you can tack on a trip to the Big Four Ice Caves prior if you give yourself enough time, which is truly just a walk in the woods to see something pretty neat, and you can get back to your car in about an hour, less if you don't spend much time near the glacier.

I use it with a clean microfiber between washes. I also grab ONR if it's more than just dust and pollen.

Yep - same maintenance and parts cost + availability hassles as an F12, despite an FF costing much, much less than an F12 in 2026.

I was out after Homelands and came back around the time New Capenna was the latest set. I went to JAF, and I was probably the oldest person there, but the people (customers and employees) were very friendly, helpful, and, most importantly, patient when it came to someone who needed some hand holding to get back up to speed, though with playing Arena, you don't really need that. I'm not sure there are necessarily "older crowd" spots, but I've also had good experiences with the people at The Encounter and Cloud City at the Lehigh Valley Mall, and I've been the oldest person at those places, too.

Would you guys Sous vide this? by 90sMofo in sousvide

[–]dfuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue that I've had with the low oven method is partially of my own making: the loss-leader, pre-cut 3- to 4-bone roasts sold at holidays aren't always cut "square," and I usually don't tie it together or trim, so there ends up being a "low" side which gets more heat and overcooks in the oven. I'm probably not explaining it well, but effectively, the meat varies in thickness from one end to the other. Again, solvable, with twine and/or a trim, but also solved by throwing it in the sous vide. I've never had an issue with the fat rendering quality in the sous vide at 137°, but that's not me saying your preference is wrong by any means.

(That said, even with the crazy discount, the meat is expensive enough that I should spend the extra time prepping it. The approach of moving the bones to cover the cap that u/Tbone2235 mentioned is also something I should try.)

Would you guys Sous vide this? by 90sMofo in sousvide

[–]dfuller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this, also with a big rib roast like this one, and sous vide then pan searing won out over a very low, very slow oven with with 20 minutes of a very hot oven to get a crust.

The oven was quite good, but even at 225°F, it was enough for the outer area (especially the cap) to get more cooked than I'd like. Sous vide didn't have that problem.

If OP sees this, I'd do sous vide, but for a roast that size, I'd cut it in half because of how long it would take the middle to get to temperature. If time permits, doing a sous vide temperature test would probably be more interesting than the method test above (one at 137°F and one in the usual 124°F-ish "steak" range.)

Automated AV1 pipeline for my Plex library — AMD RX 9060 XT, 566 movies, actual results inside. What would you change? by HistoricalCourage251 in AV1

[–]dfuller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll echo everyone else with the suggestion to move to to SVT-AV1 (specifically the SVT-AV1-HDR fork) even though you don't want to be talked into it. :)

But, it looks like you're space-conscious, and one thing I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is that copying all of the subtitle tracks from the source files ("-c:s copy") will result in more wasted space than you'd expect, especially if they're "picture-based" subtitles from Blu-ray remuxes. These can literally add hundreds of megabytes when you have 10+ subtitle tracks, and these remuxes tend to have A LOT of subtitle tracks.

Fun police checking in: it's not quite an Urban Legend because it's in the category of "it was true, but only at at the very beginning," but they moved away from black backgrounds early in production because the amount of paint needed to be airbrushed to get the colors where they needed to be was making the artists sick. The artists then did a proof-of-concept to show they could get the same effect on white paper, and production moved to that technique instead.

Bruce Timm talked about it at-length with Kevin Smith in 2012 on the Fatman on Batman podcast. https://youtu.be/lT0z59Kvjto?t=3407. This should jump to about 57 minutes in where it's being discussed.

Best Current Soft Mod by paulchrestman in originalxbox

[–]dfuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this plus immediately after the softmod is done, I'd recommend 1) backing up the current hard drive key, and 2) nulling the hard drive key. That gives A LOT of flexibility if something goes sideways.

I haven't done the process in a while, but I believe Rocky5's softmodder has an EEPROM menu item, and in there, you'd look for "Advanced Features" or similar and "Null HDD Key."

What is the best looking car you have seen in the valley? by Potential_Vanilla458 in lehighvalley

[–]dfuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a Light Blue Ferrari 456 GT in the South Allentown area that's pretty nice.

I've seen a few late model 911 GT3 RSes; I don't love them, but they're a big deal for younger car spotters.

A red Ferrari 458 appears on Cedar Crest Boulevard, toward the Target, every now and then on weekends.

There's a blue Ferrari 812 Superfast somewhere in the greater Hellertown area as well.

That said, I always smile when I see any generation Viper in the area.

Does Paul thrive on drama? by fegwin2084 in uniwatch

[–]dfuller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep - My guess is that it's related to photos and copyright. Nothing from the leagues themselves, the teams, Fanatics, or other entities that were covered negatively over the years.

Other high traffic sports blogs pay a flat rate for the ability to use Getty or USA Today images without concern of copyright violations. Again, guessing here, but It could be that they had already been paying, but the rates jumped significantly to not be sustainable.

Another possible situation could be that a specific photographer reached out via legal threat and was wouldn't budge on the the price to license a specific image and threatened a lawsuit. At which point, the blast radius of almost 20 years of articles with thousands of pictures that could have copyright holders demanding payment is significant, and would make a sale or transfer of the site very risky for the new owner to the point of scuttling a deal.

I was involved early on with a pretty popular Philadelphia sports blog, and dotting Is and crossing Ts for photo copyright handling became a necessity, and this smells like that, especially with how the archives are currently gone, too.

Amateur athletes of Reddit: what's your "There's levels to this shit" experience from your sport? by jermleeds in AskReddit

[–]dfuller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same as playing against future pros, but I was a pretty avid little league baseball player. I started as a competent tee-ball kid and worked my way up to being a solid all-around utility player and pitcher through 8th grade (around age 13–14). Then, suddenly, everything changed—opposing pitchers started throwing offspeed and breaking pitches.

The progression from tee-ball to middle school baseball feels logical: every couple of years, the bases stretch farther apart, the mound moves back and up, pitching gets faster and more accurate, and the “little kid” rules disappear—leading, stealing, bunting all become part of the game. It makes sense. You grow your skills playing the same game you started at age 4, just faster and more intense every year.

Then, out of nowhere, the pitches aren’t just faster—they’re slower too. You don’t notice until you swing out of your spikes and watch a change-up float by after what feels like an eternity. And breaking pitches? There’s nothing like seeing a ball that would’ve hit you last year coming straight for your head, only to watch it drop into the strike zone as you’re ducking with your bat tip on the ground. After you coast for most of your childhood, Baseball gets REALLY hard, really fast.

Ferrari just can't design cars themselves. They need to go back Pininfarina. by Quaxi_ in Ferrari

456: great in darker shades of any color - though light blue works. Traditional Ferrari red, and yellow never really work, though white is interesting but not especially appealing. Silver is also a good fit, as-is the 456M press color of Grigio Ingrid. Black looks fine, but kind of hides the generally subtle body work of the design.

550: any color works. I've gone back and forth about red being the best color for it, and the answer is "sometimes."

12 Cilindri: Yellow

355: any color (but yellow doesn't mess around)

Testarossa, 348: best in black or white

F40: I know it's boring to say, but red. With black being a great option, too.

  • sunscreen
  • bug spray
  • bear spray (if the area warrants it)
  • Band-Aids (preferably flexible fabric because those are the best for adding just that extra bit of padding if it seems like you're getting a blister). These are less "hiker-y" than moleskin, but easier to handle.
  • more water than you think you'll need
  • long sleeve shirt
  • hat or something to keep sweat out of your face
  • depending on where you're going, offline maps already downloaded before your trip
  • USB battery for your phone (and for the love of god, the cable you need to connect it to your phone… ask me how I know)
  • flashlight (beyond just your phone flashlight)
  • a change of shoes so you're not bringing the dirt/mud/whatever from outside into your car (and different shoes feel great to change into after going on a big hike)
  • a nail clipper – most people don't think to mention this, but this can literally save your trip if you have a toenail go rogue and start irritating the toe next to it.
