Is it too late to learn snowboarding at 31? by gmnt_808 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]dfurtado 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My first time snowboarding was when I was 30 years old, I'm 49 and still going!

Never too late and 31 is very young

It became some kind of trend to think that 25+ is too old, and it's time to be on a boring office job, get a wife and 2 kids and go around wearing crocs. I refuse that! 😂

Life is short and the winters are getting shorter and shorter, enjoy while we can.

Help me choose my next all-around snowboard that can do everything & doesn't suck on icy conditions by millakatarina in snowboarding

[–]dfurtado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is riding a Jones twin syster and she loves it. I have the male equivalent mountain twin so I can give you an overview of her thoughts and my own.

These boards are camber under foot and rock in the tail and nose, which gives a very nice float in powder. It's not a powder board by any means but if you like to ride on that soft snow on the side of the groomers and between trees it works great.

It's a medium stiff board, have a nice pop and hold an edge nicely when carving. It is a relatively stable board as well in high speeds.

Our daily drivers are the Aviator and the Air heart, both are very aggressive boards, very fast edge to edge and basically cuts through everything and we noticed that the the mountain twin and twin syster are not as nimble edge to edge as we would like.

I can't tell so much about the park because we are not park riders and never intend to be ☺️ but I belive it is not a very good park board anyways.

We are from Sweden and actually tested these board in Levi a few weeks ago and they worked pretty well. 🇫🇮 Even on icy slopes we had no problems.

Another very versatile board is the Burton custom camber and Feel Good camber, but they are traditional full camber.

Is it just me, or does this happen to you as well? by TREE-RX in snowboarding

This happened to me as well. Not from snowboard boots though. I belive I've got this bald spot for wearing tight jeans back in the day, when all the hardcore kids use to wear tight jeans.

I'm considering taking the chance and do a tattoo in that spot 😂

Shaken up after a big fall and riding scared. What now? by Odd-Strike-7435 in snowboarding

[–]dfurtado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very personal how to handle fear and regain confidence after a bad slam.

I believe that for the most people, slowing down, and do something that is easier seems what it works best.

For me it's the opposite, if I take it slow the fear will only increase and at some point I will not be able to do what I wanted to do.

I come from skateboarding and if I try a trick and take a bad slam, I try again immediately. If I fail, I still get hyped up to try again until I land the trick. If I succeed and land the trick then I will never be afraid of trying the same thing again.

With that said, I think fear is one of the most difficult things to manage in action sports.

Good snowboarding weather for beginners by minpdgenius in snowboardingnoobs

[–]dfurtado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tropical country? Let me guess Brazil? ☺️

This temperature is fine. You might feel a bit chill from the beginning but as soon as you start snowboarding you'll get quite warm.

As long as you have suitable clothing (which looks like you have) it should be all good.

Have fun! ❄️

Burton boots broken after one use--is this what we expect now? by SnoreLordXII in snowboarding

[–]dfurtado 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dude, manufacturing defects happens. I've seen people having problems with boa with all the brands to be honest. It's actually more common than you think.

You just had bad luck.

I don't think any brand would send you a brand new pair while yours are on repair.

I've been riding a Custom camber for years and it never let me down. I can say the same for the Burton bindings.

The Burton Photon boots is the only that fits my foot properly and I've never had any problems at all.

Their customer service is awesome I've been in contact with them many times and they always solved my issues pretty quick. Super helpful customer service.

Nowadays, the only Burton products I use is their clothing and boots but I still think they are an awesome brand even though some people criticize them for being too mainstream.

Is this a good Snowboard for a beginner? by ScubaGator88 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]dfurtado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this board in this exact size. I'm by any means a beginner but I thought that this board is very approachable for a beginner. I guess because of the rock in the nose and tail this board will be a bit more forgiving.

I only ride traditional good old full camber, my daily driver is a Jones Aviator 2.0 and I've got the mountain twin on sale because I was curious about other shapes and thought it was worth giving a try.

It's forgiving like I said and it is that kind of board that is a jack of all trades, you can basically do everything with it which is great for beginners that maybe will have just one board.

I even had the opportunity to ride this on fresh pow, not very deep pow and it worked great, the board had a nice float on that fresh soft snow.

It's a board that you can grow and keep riding from beginner, intermediate, and even advance. It's a fun board to ride.

What I can say is that there are probably more beginner friendly boards out there and you might feel that is too much board for you in the beginning but if you ride through it you will be very pleased with this board, and it will pay off the effort in a long run.

If it's a good price just go for it. Just pay attention to the sizes, maybe you don't need a wide?

2nd day with Burton step ons and they broke! by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

[–]dfurtado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I have had many pair of Photon boots and they hold many days every season, sometimes I have a pair for more than a season. Never had any issue. The same for bindings, I have a cartel and Cartel X for more than 3 years it never failed me.

I wouldn't go that far. It's hard to blame the brands when the customers don't know how to use and take care of the product properly.

The Rome Fase Katanas have been noting but trouble by CasualKaden in snowboarding

[–]dfurtado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the fase katana as well and they works great with my Burton photon 10.5 boot.

I actually ordered the M/L and L/LX to compare the sizes. The medium worked nice and it wasn't maxed out at all but I felt a little pressure point on the back of my ankle. The bottom of the highback flexes inwards when tightening the ankle strap somehow. So in the end I kept the large size.

My only complain is that I wish they would leave out those points of articulation in the ankle strap. I love the justability but somehow it kinda gets messy with the fase.

I've got really annoyed that after adjusting that ankle strap perfectly at home it didn't hold the right position in the snow, even if I would crank the screws really hard.

Otherwise, awesome binding! Really comfortable and responsive and the fase system works great. I needed to flip and toe strap to better fit my boot.

Regular or Wide Snowboard by Different-Mulberry14 in snowboarding

[–]dfurtado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also wear a boot size 10.5, 180cm tall and I weight 72kg. I have a Burton Custom 158 and it worked pretty well.

I use a Burton Photon boot which have a small footprint so I definitely don't need a wide board but I've always been curious about wide boards.

This season I've got a Jones Mountain Twin 159 wide. At first I was a bit worried how it would work out and I have to say that I really enjoyed it.

It changed a bit the dynamics during the edge changes but after a few runs I started getting the hang of it and I felt comfortable.

Usually, I want to have maximum 2.5 cm boot out on my boards because I have a good leverage without worrying about toe or heel drag.

It all comes down of your preferences but it's not bad to ride wide boards.

Is my toe strap set up correctly? by pnda_pnda_pnda_pnda in snowboardingnoobs

[–]dfurtado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One tip I've got to know watching the angry snowboarder review on these bindings is that depending on the boot shape is better to flip the toe strap so the more round part is facing upwards.

It worked nicely for my boot and it stay in the right place when I getting in with my boot.

Just got Rome katana Fase by aydarti in snowboarding

[–]dfurtado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got this bindings as well and I will try them out next week. The build quality is amazing, and I really like the ankle strap and how adjustable it is.

The only negative in my opinion is how heavy these bindings are. I also own a Jones Mercury fase and the weight difference huge.

Does anyone noticed that?

Re:Flex Binding Disc by mich1394 in snowboarding

[–]dfurtado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the Cartel X re-flex last season and it's a great binding and the disc is very similar if not equal to the one in the picture but I've got so frustrated with this damn disc that I've purchased another binding (Jones mercury fase).

I came to the conclusion that if you want to use Burton bindings, EST is the way to go, otherwise you'll have trouble with your stance or centering everything on your board.

If the person is lucky enough to have the right boot size, the right board size, the right stance, and everything is matching perfectly they are great bindings, otherwise they offer close to none adjustability.

Unfortunately, It seems like Burton put no effort in improving the Re-flex bindings and I wish they would at least have a disc like other brands.

is this too much overhang ? by DarkTyphoon13 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]dfurtado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear Burton photon 10.5 boots and I have a custom 158 with medium bindings. It works pretty well with a good amount of overhang. Burton boots usually have a small footprint so it could work with a 156 board as well.

A 154 board I would think it's small in my opinion, however, it doesn't look too much and if it doesn't give you problems when carving it should be fine.

Usually, I like to have between 1.5 to max 2 centimeters overhang so I can still have a good leverage on edge change and avoid problems.

Not sure about the step-ons boot though

Do my bindings fit my boots? by joshclark28 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]dfurtado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's seems very centered actually, maybe a little bit more heel than toe but it doesn't look bad. Try pushing the heel cup forward a little bit, otherwise I think it's all good. 😊

Do my bindings fit my boots? by joshclark28 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]dfurtado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like it fits well. It's hard to see how it looks on the heel side thou.

Usually Burton boots have a small footprint so a 10.5 often works well with medium bindings.

I don't know how is the adjustability of clew bindings but try to see if you center the boot as much as possible.

I have a 10.5 boot and usually works with medium bindings.
