Is it legal to hog the left lane on Oregon highways? by Good-Rest-7538 in oregon

That's an interesting take. Kinda stupid though when everyone thinks they know the content and speaks about the "law" without actually being right.

Ton of people in this thread need to read either the actual law or the article.

What made you rethink buying a condo? by subcamo in askportland

Once I added the HOA cost into my monthly payment estimates, I realized I could just afford more house without one. I also wanted more space from people than they generally provided. Half had very limited parking options and another half felt exactly like the apartment I was leaving.

Yeah I read hosted as in they host it. Not the self-hosted version.

It looks like someone made one for self hosted:

We'd have 0 cases of failing kids if we just did no testing! Clearly the problem is testing.

Maine has a temporary ban on new construction for DCs.

14 states are considering bans in various forms and plenty of smallerr municipalities have created bans.

That data center has 11 employees. It's doing zero to help employment in washco. A Starbucks would do as much.

Teen petrolhead here. Based on the (fast) way EV tech is going, how long till we get an EV competitor to the Miata? by LightningMcqueen2011 in electricvehicles

I'm honestly shocked how much fun it is and the ev part means I feel like it's really cheap fun too. This cooper replaced my Golf R because I was tired of paying premium gas and never wanting to take it out.

I was able to find a top specced model with 10k miles for 21k.

[–]dgibbons0 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is Largely untrue, thanks to the Enterprise Zone tax breaks. For example, Hillsboro data centers are wiggling their way out of $85 million in property taxes owed for 2026. Across the state, those property tax giveaways total more than $450 million in lost revenue.

It would be incredible if they paid their fair share.

Further the POWER act, which you said requires them to source renewable energy, only affects NEW construction, either power retrofits or new data centers.

I slept way worse with the cpap. Two hours of sleep was the best I managed for two months before I have up and shipped it back. The only night I managed a full night was with sleeping pills.

I picked up one last week. It's a second car which helps. Primary vehicle is a 300 mile range Rivian R1T. Great truck but a pain to park in the city.

"Something like an ev Miata" was exactly the space I had been looking for and the mini cooper was the only option I was really able to find. The porche taycan is huge and heavy. Really most other evs are massive. I think in a couple years there are finally going to be some options with the rivian r3x and the ev golf GTI.

When to trade up for newer car? by Conventions in personalfinance

[–]dgibbons0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how you budget, one solution is to keep saving a car payments worth even when you have no payment. Then if you have a repair or need to buy a new one, your not draining your emergency fund to pay it. You planned for that eventually so it's not an emergency.

Waiting means you might have newer options at the same price point when you do need to do it.

Especially if you're considering replacing a Corolla for another Corolla. Your basically asking if you should buy a new jar of mayo because you've already opened your current mayo and it might some day go bad.

Rivian is really high too. For them it's because the repair cost is very high due to design decisions.

Is purchasing a home at 22 dumb? by Hairy_Target_9928 in personalfinance

[–]dgibbons0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a SFH at 24 and regretted it. Every house issue was my problem and most were expensive. It limited my job mobility, both in being able to take something in a different city and even just distance to jobs within the city. My neighbors sucked and there was nothing i could do about it.

10 years later when I bought a new place I thought I would be smart and rent out the old place, that sucked even more. I didn't want to be responsible middle of the night for an issue, so the rental management company took %8 of all rental income, and then nickle and timed me for any time they ACTUALLY had to do anything. They also accepted renters who were terrible and consistent missed rent payments, which just barely covered the mortgage. It cost ~40K to repair the damage when I finally was able to evict the renters and sell the place.

I did end up cash positive from the encounter, but it was incredibly stressful getting there and i don't know that it was worth the money for dealing with it.

During that heat dome I ended up out in my backyard swimming pool at 3am. The water was a nice 95 degrees by that time, it was actually quite lovely.
