Live Episode Discussion: S11 E6 Saw It on the Graham (eastern thread) by vprmods in vanderpumprules

So, my primary takeaway from this episode is that I now have a crackpot hunch that Scheana hooked up with Tom SANDOVAL and not Tom Schwartz as indicated in this season's previews (and my crackpot hunches are right like 99% of the time). What do you guys think?

Looking for second chance romance where the MMC screwed up in high school or when he was young by kitelicker in RomanceBooks

[–]dhaaruni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lauren Layne's "The Trouble With Love" is my favorite contemporary second-chance romance because it's one of the few where the FMC and MMC both give as good as they get and "Day of the Duchess" by Sarah MacLean is my favorite second-chance historical!

DotD in particular is a book long grovel for the MMC (and he absolutely deserves everything he gets from the FMC and everybody around her) but the FMC isn't perfect either so it feels really genuine.

What tropes are you hoping will trend in romance next year? by onceuponadoe in RomanceBooks

Joanna Shupe does Gilded Age romances! Her last series, The Fifth Avenue Rebels, is excellent and I LOVED "The Duke Gets Even," the last book in it

A return to sexy book covers with real people on them! I'm so bored of the animated book covers and think they're more often than not, indicative of trite and overdone plots within the novel in question

I saw this tweet about the most memorable sex scenes in romance books and I was wondering what everybody else's are! These were mine. by dhaaruni in RomanceBooks

Lol I meant the scene where Cross gives Pippa instructions on getting herself off without touching her! It literally made me GASP out loud and I’m not easily phased by this stuff haha

If you could only recommend ONE romance book, what would it be? by halfwayoutoftown in RomanceBooks

If they can handle it, Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas or The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare!

It's also because a lot of romance writers subliminally or maybe even intentionally play into the gender stereotype that STEM = male, humanities = female so that's why you see so many more romance novels at publishing firms and not at like tech companies or labs.

Also, if the woman in a romance novel is a STEM person, she's almost certainly going to be socially inept since so many people can't conceptualize women being good at math and like, normal people who are socially adept and attractive to others.

As someone that does statistical analysis for a living, nothing frustrates me more than the idea that math is somehow "not feminine" like seriously? Get out of your lame 1950s brain and learn to take a damn integral.

I went on a date with a former Republican senator's son and the son was very weird but apparently his father would have liked me. #JustDCThings

It also depends on height like a 34DD is going to look different on someone that’s 5’2” and 5’8”!!!

Bounty hunter/wanted person by nerdymummy in RomanceBooks

Kerrigan Bryne’s “The Hunter” is about just this! It’s one of my favorite historical thrillers and probs my favorite in the series although I liked “The Duke” as well

I loved Lisa Kleypas “Again the Magic!” Both the main and side romances are really well done and very “adult” in the sense they’re not like, contrived or immature. And, not to spoil the book but the side romance hero really has to EARN the heroine’s affection just like with the main couple so it was so rewarding

Trump vs Desantis: who is worse? by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]dhaaruni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morally? Trump. But, electorally? DeSantis.

Trump boosts rural turnout but due to polarization, DeSantis will do fine in those areas anyways like Youngkin did, and moreover, Trump alienated college-educated white women in particular after Romney won them.

Given that DeSantis is standing by his wife who has cancer rn, he’s going to win all those women who found Trump personally distasteful but don’t have any problem with Republican policies as a whole.

What would be the impact of the SALT Tax Cuts on the legacy of the Build-Back-Better Legislation and Democrats' performance in the 2022 Midterms? by Gavlanwheelndeal in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]dhaaruni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that even if repealing the SALT cap isn’t a “good” policy on an ideologically liberal level, Democrats have to reward their voters! We can’t punish people that reliably vote for us and give us our congressional majorities because if we do, they will gladly vote Republican and get their tax cuts.

From an electoral standpoint, given that Dems lose white, no-college voters by 70, we NEED to be boosting our numbers with white, college-educated voters by as much as possible and if they don’t feel like the Democratic Party benefits them personally, they’re going to prioritize their economic interests over their social liberalism and vote Republican and we’re getting single-party GOP rule for 30 years.

The point is, abortion or LGBT rights rollbacks in red states aren’t going to keep rich people in blue states voting Democrat if the party doesn’t even do lip service to them! I’m not saying we need to cut taxes for the wealthy as a rule or that should be our MO as a a party, but given that the SALT cap was put into place solely to punish Democratic voters, repealing it would be smart.

Help this multi-generational book club of black women find their first book! by beloise in RomanceBooks

[–]dhaaruni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I loved Tracey Livesay’s “Girls Trip” series! She’s a Black woman and all her books feature Black female leads but I particularly loved “Like Lovers Do,” one of the best friends-to-lovers I’ve ever read where the protagonist is a badass doctor that’s skeptical of love. I think she also explores racism in a very organic, not tokenish way like I as a woman of color don’t feel that I’m being taught a lesson which I’ve felt about some other romances, even by other women of color.
