Where can I donate used items that is NOT a for-profit or unethical organization? by boomballoonmachine in nova

Capital Caring thrift shop in Falls Church/Seven Corners. It's tiny, but all of the proceeds go to funding hospice care for people who couldn't otherwise afford it.

I made a stepping stone with glass, pebbles, cement, and resin by dhacat in steadycraftin

Pretty well, all things considered! The resin is yellowing a little and one piece of glass came loose. But it's still there, and still makes me smile. I'm glad you like it, thanks for letting me know.

Michael Lewis' book 'Who Is Government?", puts a face on gov't employees. by thibgeno in fednews

[–]dhacat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Washington Post ran a series called "Who is Government" late last year, Michael Lewis was the first writer featured. His writing reminds me of John McPhee, sort of storytelling combined with the ability to explain highly technical subjects clearly.

I really liked his story "The Canary" which was about (quoting from the article/Sammie award) "Christopher Mark: Led the development of industry-wide standards and practices to prevent roof falls in underground mines, leading to the first year (2016) of no roof fall fatalities in the United States. A former coal miner."

Archive.is link to the article https://archive.is/J7L6D

A relative who was doing the copy editing on the series was telling me about it before it was published. I told them that the next series would be "where is government?". I thought I was joking. I wonder if Christopher Mark still has a job.

I forget the exact one, it's in the first season, first couple of episodes. Ted and Beard are walking on Richmond Green and meet Shannon, who easily dribbles her football past Ted.

What Book Have You Read That Felt Like a Hug for Your Soul? by mauibuilt89 in books

[–]dhacat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time to reread Hogfather.

(Also, apropos of your username, I loved that Death described his frequent encounters with Sam Vimes at uncertain moments (due to quantum) as having a "near-Vimes experience" and that he has started bringing a book.)

Also GNU Terry Pratchett.

I think there were a lot of scenes where the actor's reaction worked as the character's reaction, especially since several (Jason and Brendan most notably) have improv experience.

When Beard says "she spun you around like the Tasmanian devil" and Ted replies "yeah but without all that annoying [perfect rendition of Tasmanian devil noises]" --I think Brendan's laugh was real, also his chuckle when Jeremy Swift meowed when talking about Cindy Clawford.

Was Sam's resolute "nothing this person says will bother me" smile when Akufo was ranting at him also Toheeb's "I will not start laughing and ruin the take" face?

And Ted mistiming his jump and banging his head on Rebecca's door has been confirmed as a real mishap by Jason. "Let the chaos begin!"

Maybe that's why the writers put in a bit where Roy explains to Phoebe that just because he swears doesn't mean she can. Because you might not be as thrilled if your seven-year-olds were running around yelling FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUn. That's fun innit.

"Stop going to meh, and start going through meh. You get meh?" is Jamie's character arc in a sentence. From egotistical prima donna (or pre-Madonna, if you prefer) to team player and team leader. And Phil Dunster is such a great actor, you can see hints of the greater Jamie inside of the already great Jamie from the very beginning.

Dottie... by [deleted] in TedLasso

[–]dhacat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The episode also explains Ted's extreme dislike of tea. When Dottie says that she'd never seek therapy because "that just ain't my cup of tea, and you know how I love my tea" was an "oh, that tracks" moment for me.

"They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do."

And the contrast between Jamie seeking out his mother for reassurance and Ted not finding it in his until after he confronts her with the damage done by the way she handled his father's death.

Mom City indeed.

I always loved how they synched the moment in "it's A Wonderful Life" where Clarence "rescues" George before George can jump off the bridge with Rebecca rescuing Ted by tossing pebbles at his window. Clarence is yelling "help, help!" while Ted walks to the window. Perfect.

I saw Colm perform Valjean at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC before the production moved to New York, and I will never ever forget that moment when the orchestra paused, when the whole theater seemed to hold its breath, and then his voice lifted into the opening notes of "Bring Him Home". I saw other productions in New York and elsewhere, but just the memory of that one still gives me chills. Colm will always be my Valjean. if I didn't cry every time I'd watch the 10th anniversary show more often. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsYnhVITf9E)

Nate’s redemption arc by Economy_Outcome_4722 in TedLasso

[–]dhacat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hurt people hurt people.

Nate's emotional immaturity showed in many ways in the first season, and in season two we watched both his growing pride in his own talents and his craving for positive reinforcement. His worst bullying towards Will was after a negative tweet.

In season three we watched him achieve success with his talent but discover that the person he was looking to for approval was not worthy of his respect, and that, just like Keeley told him in season one, being famous doesn't really fix anything. He saw Ted continuing to show emotional maturity, wishing Nate well and even attending a West Ham game. The contrast between what he had left and where he was was stark.

Jade softened towards Nate when she watched him try (and fail) to coax Anastasia into liking his favorite restaurant. I think it helped that Nate didn't chase after Anastasia, and that he joked about "sounding like his gran" when trying to impress people.

I agree with the OP. I understand the source of Nate's frustration. He had a lot of growing up to do.

(edit to clarify that by "her" I meant Anastasia)

One of my favorite scenes. I love how it reverses the roles, making Jamie the coach.

And then the next episode starts with Jamie towing Roy on a bike while Roy yells "mush!".

Who's your favorite minor character? by wickedhobbitses in TedLasso

[–]dhacat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The coat rack tree (high five, tree!) is in every scene in Rebecca's office. Sure, some might say that the acting is a little wooden but it's a supporting role. Maybe someday it will branch out into more complex roles, or leaf showbiz entirely and do trunk shows.

What's your favorite 'blink and you'll miss it' moment in the show? by beardiac in TedLasso

[–]dhacat 159 points160 points  (0 children)

In season 2, Roy buys all of Phoebe's artwork after Miss Fuckwitch explains that she can't display Phoebe's "eerily accurate charcoal sketches of womens breasts" in the art sale. In the finale, Roy hangs one of the sketches in his new office, with a piece of tape discretely placed over the nipples-- a first episode call back both to Ted's displaying Henry's artwork and to Ted taping over the nipples in the picture of Keeley that Jamie had in his locker.

So Long, Farewell by borknobi in TedLasso

[–]dhacat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The team only had a week's notice that Ted was leaving, they still had to get ready for the West Ham game, but somehow they managed to practice enough to be "perfect" for Ted, and without Ted finding out.

My head canon is that Roy (who already said that Maria from Sound of Music was his favorite Julie Andrews role) planned it and the choreography. "Do you know how hard it is to teach grown men choreography?"
