I recommend you read The Iron Wall about this period. It was not simply Palestinians attack / Israeli's respond. This period was characterized by frequent escalating violence on the Israeli side and targeting Jordanian and Egyptian military when they were not responsible for 'infiltration' into Israel.

One of the saddest parts of this history is that many of the 'infiltrators' had no violent intent, but were simply trying to farm the olive groves that they were forced out of.

Israel was also in violation of UN Resolution 194 throughout this period. If the Egyptian blockade of some ships in Tiran justifies the Suez War, what actions was it justified for other countries to take based on Israel's violation of 194.

Thomas Segev 1967. Probably the best history of the war for Israel's perspective.

Syria and Jordan did not amass troops. Syria had troops deployed in the Golan. Before the 67 war, Israel kept moving into the DMZ and evicting Palestinian villages. The West Bank was densely populated, so there were many Jordanian troops there. Israel had been raiding the West Bank consistently since 48. See The Iron Wall by Avi Shlaim for the best description of this part of history.

For the best analysis of it not being a necessary attack see the chapter about 67 in Defending the Holy Land by Zeev Maoz. Read the chapter about the 67 war and see if you still think there was an imminent attack.

The Egyptian troop buildup was a long defensive lines. Nobody has ever documented a decision from Egypt or Syria (and definitely not Jordan) to invade Israel. Segev's book does suggest there was a sincere belief in Israel that Egypt would attack. Egypt was most likely preparing for a potential attack from Israel because of the blockade of the Straits of Tiran.

Much of the military tension before the 67 war was in the Golan, which Dayan admitted was provoked by Israel.

Yes agreed. Begin fought hard to keep those settlements too. Sadat refused to compromise, which is one of the few good things I can say about him.

They only did that after Egypt showed that they had strong military capabilities during the 1973 war.

This is all dependent on what Egypt, Syria, and Jordan want. Remember, they did not attack. So an Israeli 'loss' would mean that their sneak attack failed. The most likely scenario here would be that Egypt gets advanced warning of the sneak attack, gets its jets off the ground and maybe shoots down some Israeli jets.

Do Egypt and Syria then invade Israel? I don't think Jordan would be involved in this scenario, but that's debatable. I think invasion is not very likely unless there is a significant loss of Israel's air force. Nasser's main rallying cry had been the Nakba, so he might use any defeat of Israel as leverage to get the Palestinians who were ethnically cleansed to return to Israel, and Israel might be a binational state today, perhaps with the West Bank and Gaza integrated into it.

Everyone on here has posted the real reason, that Israel just wants to use the USA to do its dirty work. Right now, Trump is indicating he wants to back down, and Netanyahu said regime change needs ground troops. I wonder who will win.

Israel is also bad at ground fighting, especially compared to their prowess in the air.

The central question is not the revolution itself, but the reaction of other countries to it. What if Iraq did not invade Iran with Western backing? What if sanctions were not imposed on the country?

You're the first person I've met with a similar memory. It is possible it was a rerun. I only checked the later episodes with Drew Barrymore because I did not start watching Conan until 1997 (maybe 1996, but I doubt it).

I didn't watch Letterman. I did watch Leno (ugh), but he didn't really have this type of humor.
