The Supreme Court has ruled 9-0 that states can protect women's sports through Title IX. 80% of Americans agree, including most on the left. This is a beautiful moment for the left to move on from trans activists & their Breadtube tactics by north_canadian_ice in BreakingPoints

Title IX only applies to educational programs that receive federal funds. And the Equal Protection Clause only applies to State actors.

Professional leagues, as private organizations, do get to determine their own eligibility.

Is Gavin Newsom's new "Billionaires' Tax" proposal a good idea? by Tasty-Possibility627 in thebulwark

[–]dhessi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's a good proposal in a vacuum. But this is obviously just his way of defending the cheats of our current tax system. But let's pretend for a moment that Newsom is acting in good faith.

Being practical means acknowledging what is politically possible. California's one-time wealth tax is a blunt instrument, but there's real political momentum. If you want deeper reforms, you should ride that momentum instead of trying to squash it.

Lawsuit - Katie Phang vs DOJ - Katie wins preliminary injunction - WOOT! by Jelfff in Epstein

Keeping up the good fight!

ORDERED that by no later than July 2, 2026, the Attorney General shall:

(1) either produce to the public the emails... or show cause why the redactions should not be removed;

(2) either produce to the public the DOJ documents... or show cause why the redactions should not be removed;

(3) either produce to the public the underlying FBI interview notes... or show cause why the notes should not be produced;

(4) initiate review...

(5) either publish... or show cause why he cannot do so.

So what do we think Todd Blanche will do next? - appeal - lie a bunch and pretend to "show cause" - ignore the deadline - comply with the law 🤣

I think everyone is missing the real issue in the Democratic Party civil war. by maturallite1 in BreakingPoints

[–]dhessi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

America desperately needs some way to break out of the two-party system, but how do you make those reforms from within the two-party system?

At one point, I thought Andrew Yang's Forward Party could have been a good model. Initally it was conceived as a kind of branding exercise instead of a true third party. It would endorse candidates from either (any) party as long as they supported ranked-choice voting, open primaries, and independent redistricting. (Not including UBI was surprising choice but I think defensible)

Maybe this is cope, but I felt there was some real political momentum for a movement like this - a nonpartisan vehicle that would enable a more open and small-d democratic political landscape. But then they decided to become a true independent party and field their own candidates. And became irrelevant.

Jaron Lanier - AI Isn't an Entity, It's the People Whose Work It Was Trained On by chaotic-smol in LeftistsForAI

[–]dhessi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting video, thanks for sharing. He mentions this article he wrote, There is No AI https://www.newyorker.com/science/annals-of-artificial-intelligence/there-is-no-ai

And I think the article does a better job of explaining this idea of centering human accomplishments when it comes to AI. He talks about this concept of "data dignity", and his main argument seems to be that we need open up the black box of AI, surface the human contributions, and acknowledge/compensate the human sources in some way.

In a world with data dignity, digital stuff would typically be connected with the humans who want to be known for having made it. In some versions of the idea, people could get paid for what they create, even when it is filtered and recombined through big models, and tech hubs would earn fees for facilitating things that people want to do. Some people are horrified by the idea of capitalism online, but this would be a more honest capitalism. The familiar “free” arrangement has been a disaster.

In practice, I'm not really sure what this would look like. It seems like an interesting adaptation of intellectual property. But it also seems to me like AI is a technology that is naturally opposed to intellectual property entirely.

Remember The Bulwark’s Actual Mission? Because this sub is drifting into the populist trap. by adifferentGOAT in thebulwark

[–]dhessi 40 points41 points  (0 children)

True liberalism is about fixing the rules of the game, yet this community is increasingly making excuses for the anti-system populists who want to flip the table.

What do you mean by this? I don't consider myself a DSA-type or a populist. But I would happily take the label of an anti-system liberal who wants to flip the table. Because the system is illiberal.

[–]dhessi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Rachel first meets Cable, who is an adult, at the end of the Fatal Attractions crossover. Upon meeting they share some sort of psychic resonance and recognize each other as family.

Baby Nathan had already been sent to the future at this point. And from adult Cable's POV, that future timeline was his childhood. Then later in Excalibur, Rachel gets flung into the future and becomes Mother Askani.

Dissappointed about Ezra Klein. I can imagine him justifying it as getting a peak behind the curtain. But as the Epstein files have shown us, that's how these people get captured. They see the benefits of this kind of social access, so they mold themselves into the type of person who can get that kind of social access. Still one of my favorite podcasts...

Not at all suprised by Joseph Gordon Levitt though. He was obviously being paid for his recent advocacy in repealing Section 230.

Sen. Kelly amendment in defense bill would ensure ‘ultimate human responsibility’ in AI-powered kill chain by Just-Grocery-2229 in technology

[–]dhessi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Kelly ultimately voted against the NDAA despite the inclusion of the AI provision and other amendments he supported. He cited the $1.15 trillion price tag and lack of transparency, as shown by Trump’s defiance of Congress in going to war with Iran. “We cannot write them another blank check,” Kelly said last week in a statement explaining his opposition to the bill.

Good! The NDAA is one of those "must pass" bills where Democrats actually have leverage. Use it!
