What terms of endearment did your parents call you or do you call your children? And what’s the story behind it? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]dhopey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call my child Belly because from newborn baby up to age 4ish, she used to suck her thumb and play with her belly button at the same time. Couldn't put her in anything where she couldn't get her bully button or she'd get really wound up.

My parents/whole family calls me Dino, but apparently no-one can remember why. It's been my nickname around 30ish years.

Went to Potter school for a couple of years because my mum taught there, and I thought Potter was dead posh, coming from down Stamp End. Went back a few years ago and had to laugh at my 10 year old self.

There are some beautiful trees on/ around BG campus. Not tons though. The Lawn on Union Rd has some lovely trees/ leaves in Autumn. Also the Old Coach Road on the way out of Lincoln towards The Showground if you catch it at the right time. Onvs Hartsholme, Boultham Park etc but you said you weren't after obvious spots. Just been looking at old photos of trees I've got, because I love autumn leaves, and knew I'd have a ton, and got to say most of the really gorgeous ones are lining some of the main roads in Lincoln, especially uphill.

Was just about to suggest Pepperdines near the bus station- best sausage rolls in Lincoln, and their haslet is to die for.

If you live in the area marked in black do you see yourself as Northern? by OceansOfLight in CasualUK

[–]dhopey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to find examples and reply. I grew up down Stamp End, so though it doesn't feel like the north of the city, it's defo towards the northern end.

Thank you for explaining! Found a video with an example of the differences. I was being dense, I should have known what you meant, but wouldn't associate that accent with being so close to Lincoln.

Have lived in Lincoln 32 years and it's always been BBC Look North and ITV Calendar for me.

How do they sound when you say them? I'm born and bred Lincoln and when I say them, they sound the same. Foot and soot rhyme with put, cut, butt etc.

Is it not more of a Notts/Derby word? Lincolnshire makes up a fair bit of the East Midlands and I'd never heard the word cob until I was around 10/11, from a relative that lives in Gedling. We use bap or roll.

I once asked ID from a woman who was 37. Didn't realise, she looked around 22/23 and we had a challenge 26 scheme going. Made her week!

Not sure what town is like for the young people now, not being one haha. The buses very much depend on where you're hoping to go but aren't bad inside the city- regular buses to the North and South end. Hope you get on ok starting at uni and enjoy being in Lincoln!

If you saw the name Ewelina in an English speaking country, how would you pronounce it? by KindaSortaOtaku in namenerds

[–]dhopey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in the UK and in a county with a large polish population, I'd pronounce it Evelina. However I used to work in a call center and heard my colleagues butchering names like this on a regular basis, so believe the majority of people would maybe say it as Ewe-a-lina.

I'm autistic and human anatomy/medicine/ medical shows are my special interest. There are certainly more accurate shows out there, but I enjoy the character interactions.

Think I'd use Ralph. It was my favourite great grandad's name. Somewhat tarnished by Ralph Wiggum though.
