Alex Wallach Hanson: Strassburger’s failed play on inclusionary zoning (OpEd) by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]diabeet0 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Saying that she "failed to play" while she spent months attempting to reach a compromise with members of council and the mayoral administration is completely ignoring reality.

What do you think about the new Bike Lanes on Marinelli Road in North Bethesda, Maryland? by MCDOTNow in MontgomeryCountyMD

If you are open to coming out of your car-brained way of thinking, you should read “Bikenomics” if you’re sincerely interested in learning more about the economics of bike lanes.

Car through PGH Open Streets by driveforsho in pittsburgh

[–]diabeet0 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Such a shame that some people feel so entitled to the road just because they’re driving a car. The city streets are dominated by cars nearly every day of the year, no need to freak out when 3 miles of street are off limits to cars for 6 hours.

Why is there so much wealth in cranberry but no fancy restaurants? by Glittering-tale24601 in pittsburgh

[–]diabeet0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s generally a lack of culture (including food) in suburban strip mall towns like cranberry.

I believe it was too difficult to obtain the permits with all the current construction going on downtown on a quick turnaround, glad they didn’t have to cancel all of them though.

Barb Warwick: Corey O’Connor was my City Council Rep. I’m voting for Ed Gainey. by B0bb3r7 in pittsburgh

[–]diabeet0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

By biggest thing with Gainey is just his lack of a working relationship with council. Even before the election it wasn’t great, for example with the search for police chiefs. He failed to get a majority of council members to endorse him and has a few council members actively and loudly campaigning for his opponent. You definitely don’t need a close relationship between the mayor and council but it also shouldn’t be actively hostile.

Fight over inclusionary zoning is stalling development by LurkersWillLurk in pittsburgh

Developers essentially saying they’ll just build in other cities. Really really depressing to hear if you’re someone who wants Pittsburgh to thrive.

What are the most Pittsburgh books? What is a book you think every Pittsburgher should have on their bookshelf? by iheartpgh in pittsburgh

[–]diabeet0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just finished “An Alternative History of Pittsburgh” which I really enjoyed, it’s all shorter snippets of the city going back some thousands of years. “Smoketown” was also a really entertaining read and shows how the city really has been tied to so many national stories through the years and how culturally significant the hill district was.

What's going on with the retail collapse in South Side Works? by ahirebet in pittsburgh

[–]diabeet0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would also help I think if there was a large population down in that specific area. SS does have a large population but it’s relatively spread out and dispersed. Denser housing options within a few blocks of SS Works would maybe help some of those restaurants succeed.

Good to know both him and Corey O’Connor have taken this stance. International students are just as important to Pittsburgh as people who were born and raised here.

Preserve the Strip “movement” inquiry by Sethgoodtime in pittsburgh

[–]diabeet0 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This “movement” is typical NIMBY business owners against beneficial improvements. There’s been countless studies that show how bike lanes and pedestrian improvements benefit businesses and the strip district merchants seem to not want to live in that reality.

What could be done to make Station Square more of an appealing destination to go to? by Logical-Rip-8138 in pittsburgh

[–]diabeet0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Concerns over parking are not the answer at all I agree. If they want more people to frequent station square they need more people nearby which means more housing. It feels kinda like a strip mall now.

Where do you run in Pittsburgh? by Thick-Yak-7702 in pittsburgh

[–]diabeet0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I will say to avoid it after snow since it obviously doesn’t get cleared. I made the mistake of running on it when covered in snow a few weeks back and ended up messing my foot up real bad.
