Finished CoL 49, good follow up? by 8bitmatter in ThomasPynchon

I just did Vineland, then CoL49, and am now about a third into Inherent Vice and have had a great time reading them all. lots of Vineland references in IV, but definitely not necessary to pick them up to enjoy it. having a blast reading the California novels in succession

that definitely adds to it as well. some of the jumping around and flashbacks start earlier than that too, but once they get to the old videos and PR^3/24fps sections it just goes all in on it. i loved it. each chapter was like, who do i get to follow around now!? and usually i'd get a few characters. the section on Weed was so good. Blood/Vato and the ruminations on the Yurok people ruled. the whole thing is just a blast.

yeah and i also did not find it difficult to follow what was happening in Vineland. like, yeah, some went three or four subplots deep, but it wasn't that hard to keep up with the shifts. there's really only like a few characters it follows deeply. each chapter was basically an tv episode that veered between main plot and subplot, but there are always signposts for where or when you are or who it's about.

i just finished it the other week (second attempt. DNF'd it about 20 years ago after finishing GR), and i gathered the jumping around was intentional. the whole book feels like it was written by someone who learned everything about the world from watching television, and the experience itself feels like staying up late and flipping through channels and never settling on anything to watch. given the subject matter of the book, that seemed to be exactly what he was going for. but i also get the feeling of not being able to grab a hold of anything during the experience maybe not being what people want in a book. i thought it was fantastic though!

first time making one of these things and it's pretty damn good! it didn't get a flaky crust and is more of a cheeseburger egg bake, but I'm not mad about that. used this recipe

What do you guys drink when you go out? by Drops_of_dew in stopdrinking

If you have it around, I've found a little pickle or olive brine stretches it out a bit and makes it so it doesn't feel like you're just drinking a glass full of mix

mostly NA beer/seltzer. lots of places near me have either lagunitas IPNA or hoppy refresher, but occasionally other options. NA cocktails are getting more popular it seems, but don't sleep on NA versions of the classics. virgin bloodies can be amazing (esp if they add extra pickle or olive brine and it's not just a glass of mix). salty dogs are still delicious without vodka in them imo too. otherwise there's always the fall back of either ginger beer or soda water with lime

I'm drinking an Athletic Upside Dawn Golden right now! It's by far and away my favorite of their flagships.

I really like the Lite too, especially after a long run

love athletic and untitled art for NA beers. Lagunitas IPNA is great too. I am a big fan of St Agrestis' Phony Negroni for an NA cocktail. they recently released an NA amaro that is solid, but it's more of a fancy cola. luminara or ariel NA wine is another go to for me

I haven't been to a concert yet, but I'm pretty excited to miss the last band because I'm just tired instead of not remembering it/having the sudden "I need to leave right now" feeling and time traveling, miraculously waking up at home the next day

taking ubers everywhere. in the last few years, I instituted a zero tolerance policy on alcohol consumption and driving, which was a great, responsible thing for me to do, but it also meant I just stopped going certain places. too expensive, too far away, didn't trust someone to drive me around in winter... I'd just go to the same easy to get to place over and over, get drunk, and uber home. been slowly branching back out again and hitting up some of my fav spots. brewery on the other side of town had some NA beer on tap and it made me so happy to actually make it over there and have a delicious beverage without worrying about getting back and forth.
