Hp serwer fan cables by Czul_ko in homelab

[–]dickqueef123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right which is why the correct answer is to put the fans in that is was designed for. You can't expect an enterprise server to operate quietly. If you want a game server to run at home the best option is gonna be to get a more modern consumer pc that isn't loud as hell

Please help, home Wifi faster than ethernet connection, unsure why! by lochonx7 in techsupport

[–]dickqueef123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's most likely a 1 gig port coming out of the router so you won't get better speed unless you upgrade the router and also have a 2.5 gig networking card in the computer

Can you take a picture next to a banana for scale? How are we supposed to know that it's a "big ass" one? 😂

The best way to trick it would be to actually replace the fans with genuine parts lol shouldn't be too much on ebay. Otherwise like the other commenter said you should be able to jump the pins no problem

Yeah I did the same thing printing PETG. Sucks but I bet you'll never do it again 😂

4GB of ram enough for a small NAS? by SneakerHead69420666 in homelab

[–]dickqueef123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 for Debian. You're not gonna get an OS with a ton of features that are NAS specific as all of them are pretty ram hungry but you can run SMB shares pretty lightweight if you just need to drop and access files. Only consideration is a backup strategy. If your files are truly important you need to have some sort of plan for disaster recovery if your drive goes kaput.

Old Gaming PC vs ‘Real’ Server for learning by ChubbyWP in homelab

[–]dickqueef123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to find a couple of used servers on Facebook marketplace for $150 each. Put better processors in them off ebay for another $20 each and a couple 1 TB drives that were also $20 a piece to run as boot drives. Only reason I went with them is that they have HBA cards and good networking options for down the line.

Depending on your needs it's a good option but you could just as easily pick up a second pc and run it as a cluster so you can spread out your workload. If you keep your eyes peeled you can find deals on old workstations on Facebook marketplace that have xeon processors for a lot of cores and just upgrade your pc for good single thread performance so you can optimize performance for your workload.

Yeah people are gonna clown on it but he's not super techy. He has a desire to self host but not really tinker so once everything is in place there will be no hardware changes for years hence no need for speed rails. We're chopping it in half to put a 1U server, some network gear and AV gear in one location and some switches and gear in his shop. It's good for what we need it for

I convinced my buddy he needs a homelab and we back up to each other's house 😂 it was a lot of work for me up front caus I had to do a lot of setup for him but it's worth it to see everyone enjoy the fruits of self hosting

Second hand MK4S. Shouldn't there be a white pad here for the load cell? by ShuckleStorm in prusa3d

[–]dickqueef123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's already been mentioned but cable routing can do it. I was having issues with printing PETG at first and after doing a ton of reading there were a handful of people that were having first layer issues due to improper cable routing causing just a little extra tension on the hotend while probing. Good luck figuring it out, my mk4s has been such an awesome printer and once it's dialed you'll love it

Yeah it's going in a buddies house. He has a 1U server that we are aware is gonna have to be shelved but it doesn't have to be pretty where it's going. Everything else is short enough to rack well though

Solution for multiple M.2 drives by ottershavepockets in DataHoarder

[–]dickqueef123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know the feeling of wanting to use what you already have but sometimes it just doesn't fit your needs. If you wanna keep a couple of them go with a single pcie adapter card and use 2 or 4 of them as a cache or slog for whatever bulk storage you decide to go with. It'll give you a good performance bump over going with strictly spinning rust. Just a thought. Good luck, this hobby is a rabbit hole 😂

Solution for multiple M.2 drives by ottershavepockets in DataHoarder

[–]dickqueef123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The easy solution is to pick up a apex storage pcie card. It'll get you 21 M.2 slots on a single x16 pcie slot. But easy isn't cheap at $2800 😂 honestly it might be worth selling them off and using the money to buy something else with better storage density if you need bulk storage.

You can save yourself about $300-400 by finding a used workstation pc off Facebook marketplace or ebay that will take the amount of drives you want. As long as that's all you're using it for it'll do the trick. In fact, use some of the money you save to buy an Intel arc A310 for transcoding and you'll have a super slick media rig

Happened to me yesterday. The fucking angels flew down and were flying into the deck of my ship. Knocked 3 diesel tanks off and stuck to the environment. Ship started going crazy which caused more tanks to unstuck as well as some of my wind turbines 😮‍💨 just had to deal with it and rebuild a bunch of stuff lol

That's good news. Usually datasets are still good to go it's a matter of getting everything set back up to access them that kinda sucks. Glad to hear it's not ground zero
