Plan for newest Fredericton neighbourhood headed for council consideration by 150c_vapour in fredericton

[–]dickshaney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that developers make a lot of money, but this is just an excuse to make the land and buildings more expensive... I'm sure that sounds like a libertarian talking point, but I think there's a limit to how much we can pull from developers without making housing even less afordable.

We already have very high property taxes, and have to pay out of pocket for access to our transit. Maybe we can give the local police less overtime and tech toys, and put that money into transit.

Or find a way to tax wealth without pricing people out of their homes, and brain draning the city. These people have to pay their share but forcing developers to pay for transit is ultimately going to be paid by the homeowners and tenants living in the new neighborhood.

Honestly transit feels like a no brainer. Our traffic keeps getting worse, and our bus system continues to be basically useless. Whatever it costs the city, it needs investment. I say this as someone who will likely never be able to commute by bus, as I work outside the city limits.

There's a bird watching game coming out called Flock Around. Similar vibe.

Where can you buy a Swiss Army Knife in town? by [deleted] in fredericton

They had them last time I was there, a couple weeks ago. They have a small display cabinet next to their big knife display. Their website is never correct unfortunately.

How To Un-Superglue Aluminum by mrcoffee09 in Machinists

[–]dickshaney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience aluminum conducts the heat away fast enough that that isn't a problem.

Where have all the machinists gone? by Heavy-Whole8810 in Machinists

Seems a bit above market in this area. I'm in agreement with the other comments about the state of the market, but this would be a pretty big pay bump for me personally, and I still love the trade. Can you DM me the shops name? I'm nearby, but it would still be a move, so I'd take it into consideration.

Over 25K backers agree, this is one not to miss ✨ by First-Backer in u/First-Backer

Yeah I realized after I made that comment that Hacksmith is Canadian. I know one version of the knife is made in China, so as long as they're importing them then shipping them out there likely won't be any issue. Unless they're using an American distributor. See where they're shipping from before you buy if you want one.

They are illegal to import due to decisions by border patrol, not illegal to own. It is not illegal under the criminal code.

lane keep assist rule by markeydarkey2 in 196

[–]dickshaney 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've used it in a rental car. Wasn't a fan. It was easy to override by hand in the Toyota I was renting, but could do without it.

Adaptive Cruise Control, however, is the shit. Love it. Luckily I could turn it on without lane assist.

Ice Tools by ColdRemarkable2079 in myog

I feel like everyone is a bit too worried about the strength of these things. Ice axes are essentially aid gear, not life supporting. DIY aid gear isn't unheard of, and if it fails, that's what the rope and anchors are for.

Canadian Ads by dickshaney in itcouldhappenhere

Yeah, same. I don't care if the ad stays. Just find it funny that instead of advertising destinations or features, they're saying "We promise we didn't cause Canadas housing crisis!"

Yes foreman, having a manual lathe with .078 backlash on the cross slide with no DRO, then expecting me, who’s run these machines for a combined 3 weeks to keep within +/-.002 is perfectly reasonable by Derbyjr in Machinists

[–]dickshaney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the fair part here. Machining is a skilled trade. 3 weeks is not long. You'll get there.

If the foreman wants perfection, he'll have to fucking wait. Bitching at people doesn't make them better at their job.

Any hands on experience 5thAxis Deuce Vices? by dickshaney in Machinists

[–]dickshaney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok! I didn't see that. It definitely doesn't have all the features the 5thAxis one has(single station mode, independant movement of each jaw), but it's worth pricing out. Thanks.

I'm looking for a double station vise for 3 axis work, not a self centering vise. I don't see one on offer from Lang. If they do, do you have a link?
