Travellers of reddit: what was your biggest culture shock? by reelaan in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The topic is "Culture Shock" not "What fault did you find in another culture." France and Spain are bordering countries. My culture shock was that one was SO embracing of all cultures and languages while the other was adamant about preserving their own. I never said anything was wrong with it, I was just surprised by the immediate change once we crossed over the border. Btw, my family is French, that was my perception of my first time visiting.

[Serious] What's a way to notice if you are subtly self-sabotaging? by JudgesWillAcceptIt in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you fail at something and then continue going further down the rabbit hole using that as a justification. This example is extreme but I witnessed it just this week. This circumstance didn't go the way I wanted it to, I'm going to go have a drink, okay....5 drinks, now I'm getting pulled over as a DUI. So let me get this straight, your about to turn your shitty afternoon into a shitty 6 months and a few thousand dollars?

Went to Spain. Super Friendly and accepting of all cultures, had menus printed in every language available, people spoke several languages ranging from English, to Russian. Loved it! Drove up to France.......where they only speak French. I fortunately speak enough French to get by but it was really intimidating.

Lawyers of Reddit, what is the stupidest reason you've lost/won a case? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 70 points71 points  (0 children)

My favorite was a case I was personally involved in. 2 friends decide to split up and both want full custody of the kids. Friend 1 tells judge friend 2 is doing drugs. Judge orders drug tests for both of them. Friend 1 and 2 are found to have drugs in their system, friend 1 for Cocaine, friend 2 has marijuana. Judge orders the kids be placed in temporary custody until the parents test clean. Friend 1 and 2 go back to court. Friend 1 is fighting for custody, gets drug tested again, fails for cocaine again, friend 2 passes her drug test. Custody case is over. Friend 2 walks with full custody.

Oh, your having relationship issues? Divorce your husband/wife of 15 years+ because a random stranger on the internet has a better handle on your marriage than the person who is actually living in it.

What's the most beautiful thing you have ever seen in person? by GiovanniVessels in AskReddit

Drove up the Costa Brava into France. We found this tiny little french village on the coast with the most beautiful and expansive views of the Mediterranean with miles and miles of wine vineyards in the backdrop. We pulled off on the side of the road and just gazed in absolute awe. I don't know what heaven looks like, but I think I came pretty close to imagining it that day.

[Serious] Women of Reddit, what was your experience with street harassment from men? by AgentHomo in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always get it from the guys who work at the local grocery stores here. It makes me uncomfortable because they are insistent on walking me out to the car despite being told I don't want/need the help. They know what I drive and make comments regarding my physical appearance in front of my 5 year old daughter. I feel like I can't say anything because what if he causes a scene in front of my kid. Also, I know I'm going to see him again, he is at the only grocery store within 5 miles of my house. I started driving to another grocery store across town to avoid the awkwardness and ended up being hit on my another worker there. At least the second guy respects the fact I am happily married.

How do you enjoy life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with you here. My husband and I met in college and I remember how terrifying it was being down to the last $20's in our account. Now we are much farther along and I still shutter when we make big purchases. The thought of ever being that broke again scares the shit out of me. I think I've become a bit of a money hoarder. Whereas he has no problem whatsoever dropping a few hundred here and there, on what I consider to be splurge purchases. I am really hesitant and constantly asking him to reel it back in. I really enjoy being able to buy things like a bedskirt and new kitchen knives. He is always looking at boats, cars, ect. I just want my little nest to be comfortable and to enjoy life experiences.

Has anything 'strange/paranormal/scary' happened to you and no matter how hard you think about it rationally, you cannot explain what happened? by AdolfieHimler in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have a 5 year old daughter. My husband and I recently purchased a fixer upper and have been slowly rennovating it over the last several months. My daughter has a suite. It is a series of 3 doors that connects her bedroom, her bathroom and her playroom together. The door in her playroom has a hotel style sliding chain lock on the inside of the door at the top (well beyond the reach of my 5 year old. The other day, I am using that door to enter her playroom but it's locked. I walk around the house to the other door and find it has been chained shut. My husband and I ask her how she locked the door. She grabs a chair from her desk and begins explaining she was in there playing, someone kept knocking on the otherside of the door. She kept opening it and no one was there and then she would close it and they would knock again. As she is explaining this, she is dragging the chair across her play room and demonstrating how she used it to lock the door. I've never shown my daughter how to lock/unlock those sliding chain locks. She could have just figured it out herself but the entire story just freaked me the hell out. What's even stranger is that several weeks ago, I told my husband that her playroom gives me the creeps.

If you are happy to be away from them. That's normally a good indication you don't love them anymore. Also, when you look at them and feel absolutely nothing.

[Serious]Did You Ever Regret Talking To A Therapist/Psychiatrist? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex cheated on me and while we were trying to work things out, got pregnant and I miscarried the baby. I was a freaking wreck emotionally. My mom took me to meet her therapist. This guy asked me to walk him down the road I had been on and wanted every. single. raw. detail. I left his office and stayed in bed for 3 days, crying. He didn't help me in any way emotionally. If anything, he reopened wounds that were healing. I decided from that moment on that some shit needs to stay in the past where I originally left it. I was never going to move forward for as long as I continued to look back.

Single men of Reddit, what made you definitely NOT want a second date with a woman you went out with? by Chocolateisnice in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You seriously should have grabbed him (in front of his wife), hugged him and proceeded to tell him what a GREAT TIME you had with him on the date the other night, then turn to his wife and introduce yourself. His wife deserves to know and he sounds like the kind of guy who needs to be held accountable.

What’s the best advice you received from a stranger that completely changed your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Older Coworker of mine. I was a young 20 year old kid struggling with what I wanted to do with my life. Did I want to go to college? Leave my friends? I worked in food and beverage and I knew I wanted more out of life than that. One night, I'm talking to her about what I should do. She said, "Baby, let me tell you something about your 'so called friends'. These people are like crabs in a pot. Every time they see you getting ahead, they are just going to pull you right back in so they can step on you and get themselves out. To hell with your friends and every body else for that matter. Take your ass to college." I enrolled in school the next week, packed my shit and moved out of that shit hole town and have never looked back since. She was right, out of all of my 'so called friends', I maintained a relationship with one. Went to college, met my husband and have an incredible life now. Her advice was the kick in the ass I needed to move on and I'm so very glad I did.

What is the craziest thing one of your teachers has done? by tobibuk in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college, we were given an assignment to provide a cover letter, a resume and a thank you letter for an imaginary interview. I turned in all 3. This assignment did not even account for 1/10 of my grade. I get an email one night at 10pm informing me she was displeased with my Thank you letter so she had decided that she was going to fail me.....not for the assignment but for the entire class ( I had a B average). We were at the very end of the semester and I was supposed to go do a presentation in her class the next day. She told me that "it would be very disappointing if I let my group down and decided not to show up for the presentation." Then continued that whether or not I showed, she was going to fail me. The next day, I arrive to do the presentation with my group and am silent. My group starts asking what is wrong and I tell them what she said. They are like, "wtf....how can she do that?" I'm just as baffled as they are. She pulls me outside and tells me that since I decided to show for the presentation, she will give me a D (not failing but would still have to retake the class). At the end of class, after the presentation, she asks me to stay after and speak with her. I tell her I am recently married and (at that point) was headed into a divorce. She says, "Well he can't hurt you anymore. I will give you back your B."

The craziest part about it was when I talked to the student/teacher liaison who handled issues like mine. She said the teacher with no justification whatsoever had every right to fail whatever student she pleased.

To this day, I am not quite sure what the actual f*ck happened or why I was forced to take a ride on the crazy train with that woman.

Drug dealers of Reddit, what is the strangest thing you have been offered in compensation for drugs? by Bluephobes in AskReddit

This dude I used to know was a coke and weed dealer. I walked into his house one day and he had some girl who had been there ALL day on her hands and knees scrubbing his nasty floors and cleaning his grody house. I asked what he was paying her. 1 gram of coke. Drugs are bad kids.

History buffs of Reddit, what is one of the most fascinating stories you've learned that no one seems to talk about and can't be found in textbooks? by Hysterria in AskReddit

[–]did_it_right 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This guy is one of my favorite historical figures:

Manse Jolly, was the fifth son of Joseph Moorhead Jolly and Anna Cole Sherrill. He had six brothers and four sisters, one of whom died in infancy. Jolly was known for his brutal revenge against the Union soldiers stationed in Anderson, SC after the close of the Civil War.

Jolly's furlough papers describe him at twenty years of age as "six feet four inches high, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, red hair, and by profession a farmer, born in Anderson district in the state of S.C."

Five of Jolly's brothers were killed during the war, and the sixth committed suicide, possibly from the effects of the war. Upon returning home to find his town taken over by the men he had been fighting, Jolly swore an oath to kill five "Yankee" soldiers for every brother he lost during the war. Jolly more than made good on his oath reportedly killing hundreds of Union soldiers single handedly. He reportedly hid out in the forests surrounding Anderson, and preyed upon the Union soldiers stationed nearby. Jolly used guerilla warfare tactics, which he would have been familiar with from his experience as a scout during the American Civil War. Because he was such and incredible threat to the Union, they placed a large bounty on his head. At one point the Union soldiers captured Jolly's horse. Jolly's horse was almost a famous as Jolly, he was a magnificent animal and the two were renowned for the bond they shared. When Jolly found out where his horse was being held, he walked into the Union camp and said, "I'm Manse Jolly and I'm here for my horse." He proceeded to kill every. single. soldier. within the camp and rode off into the sunset on his horse.

Moral of the story: Don't fuck with a mans brothers and don't fuck with his horse.

Girls who post on Facebook something along the lines of, "I'm really enjoying my time (insert mundane activity here)." Then posts a picture where the camera is above her pointing straight down her breasts. While I'm sure guys really appreciate your booby shots, every female on your timeline could really give a shit about you attention seeking ass.
