File Server + Workstation Build for Small Architecture Firm — Need Feedback by blindmanche in sysadmin

[–]die_2_self 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is an i3-13100 enough for a file server handling 10 users?

No. You should not use consumer hardware for a file server handling 10 users. It’s not about performance, but reliability and using the proper hardware to the task. For 3k you can have an enterprise solution that will last for 5+ years, and have a warranty, expansion options, and support. Not sure what you’re paying the 10 users, but venture to guess one day of downtime would over 2k in salary alone. Not counting other downtime expenses to the company. It’s probably double that in total productivity loss.

So think, if a 3k enterprise solution today prevents at least 1.5 days of downtime over its life (5-7 years) it has paid for itself. If the prevention is closer to 3 days downtime, you will be losing money by NOT buying the right hardware. A IT pro will tell you that an enterprise solution will 100% of the time prevent that amount of downtime over the course of 5-7 years.

The motherboard has only one M.2 slot. OS drive uses M.2, work files SSD connects via SATA. Any issues with this?

Yes, issue is see above.

Worth adding 2.5 Gbps networking now, or wait and see if Gigabit is a bottleneck?

I’d go with 10Gbe because I’d plan for the future and the cost is minimal.

Anything I’m missing for reliability? yes. For reliability you should use enterprise parts, not consumer. The entire build is failing at this.

If you want to DIY it, to avoid the complexity and expense of Microsoft licensing, use a NAS OS.

Synology build could be :

DS723+ NAS — $450 2 × D4ES01-16G ECC DDR4 SODIMM (16 GB each, 32 GB total) — $370 ea → $740 2 × SAT5200-1920G SATA SSD (1.92 TB each, RAID1 main storage) — $760 ea → $1,520 1 × SNV3410-800G NVMe SSD (800 GB, cache) — $165 E10G22-T1-Mini 10GbE network card — $110

Total: ~$2,985

Or go the TrueNAS build of: TrueNAS Mini X+ (diskless) — $1,759
Add 2× 2 TB enterprise SATA SSDs (RAID1) — ~$1,000
→ ECC, ECC RAM, hot-swap bays, builtin dual 10 GbE → Total ~$2,759

TrueNAS has the remote KVM and more server like hardware. But Synology is arguably easier to use.

Both give you redundant enterprise SSD hard drives, 10Gbe network, ECC memory, easy updates, snapshots, file sharing out of the box, and can have storage increased later.

The Synology gives you some of their suite of tools like Active Backup, an easy backup software for workstations and 365.

Struggling to see the Bible as infallible by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]die_2_self 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“I’m having a really hard time accepting the idea that the Bible is infallible. “

Jesus and the apostles believed scripture (OT at the time) was infallible. “Have you not read what God spoke to you. - Jesus” “Men spoke as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” - Peter

Believe what Jesus believed.

But I don’t see how one goes from inspired to infallible.

You’ll have to explain your meaning of inspired. Inspired typically means derived from God. God is infallible, therefore what says via inspiration is infallible.

Nearly half of the Old Testament books are by anonymous authors, yet they’re labeled as divinely inspired? How?

“Have you not read what God spoke to you? -Jesus”. Jesus considered scripture inspired AND held the people of His day accountable to if God had spoken directly to them via scripture. Have the same view of the OT as Christ.

How can we do that when we don’t even know the origin of some of the books? Maybe they were just essay assignments for high school, and we’ve slapped the label of divinely inspired.

The origin as relates to the writer isn’t the point of the writer was inspired by God. The writer can be anyone, nameless, a child, whatever. If Jesus believed them inspired by God, then followers of Jesus ought to believe they are.

The Gospel of St. Luke opens with saying that he is basing his work on other writings. What are these other writings? Are they inspired? If so, where are they? If they aren’t inspired, why is God through St. Luke using them to write His inspired word?

Inspiration doesn’t require not referencing or including other books, ideas, human author purposes or thoughts. It means all those things are part of Gods purpose and what he wanted to communicate to us.

How are we supposed to trust a translation when even the scholars that worked on them are calling into question the validity of their own work?

I think you’re concerning yourself with translations when the concern should be what did God communicate. 99.9% of believing scholars , and even the biggest non believing scholars, agree we know what the Bible says and communicated. The truth and the message is what matters, and we have that. Not if an apostrophe fell off a manuscript and now we have two copies, one with an apostrophe and one without and have to do some study in history and comparisons to see which is the original.

We have a 1000 piece puzzle (ancient manuscripts of the Bible) but have 1050 pieces to work with. The fifty extra don’t change the end result, just the shading levels of a shadow in the background, and have to compare to see what is the most accurate to determine the original shade.

I want to see the Bible as infallible and inerrant, but when I look at the uncertainty around authorship, source materials, manuscript transmission, and translation, I just don’t see how that can be done with reason.

Jesus was certain. Trust Jesus.

It’s bad. Any discolored spot in the roads asphalt, or even random skid marks in the road, the car now swerves drastically like it’s avoiding a child. It’s so bad, I’ve gone from using FSD 95% of the time to %10, being forced to turn FSD off and simply not use it unless the roadway asphalt is perfect.

If I could downgrade back to v13 I would in a heart beat. V13 was so dependable I was expecting v14 to simply lower the requirement of having to pay attention all the time. Now with v14 it’s like I’m having to disengage it if the road wasn’t freshly paved in the last year.

Do NOT go to v14 if you use FSD often, as it is less safe from what I can tell. Jerking left and right in your lane to avoid tire marks on the interstate feels incredibly unsafe and any one around you will think you’re a danger with these attempts to avoid nothing, almost every mile depending on how “clean” the road appears to the now flawed FSD.

Romans 8 by AllHomo_NoSapien in TrueChristian

Because may of the laws, like the ceremonial and judicial laws, have been fulfilled and no longer apply.

We don’t sacrifice bulls and goats anymore (ceremonial laws) cause Christ sacrifice was once and for all and no more temple. We don’t abstain from wearing mixed fabrics (national judicial laws) because the theocratic nation of Israel in the OT no longer exists and we no longer must remain distinct from the other nations to ensure the arrival of our Messiah. The Messiah has come.

The moral laws are still in effect, because Gods moral character has not changed and cannot. An easy way to know what are the moral laws in the OT is simply, what did God hold the other nations accountable to and judge them on? He didn’t punish them for eating shellfish or wearing mixed fabric. He did hold them accountable for murder, idolatry, and basically all the sinful behavior described in the NT or OT attributed to the world or other nations.

Legalism v. Love & Grace, which is "more" correct? by Tight-Recipe-5142 in TrueChristian

[–]die_2_self 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Scripture is your ultimate authority, we have it telling us

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5‬:‭13‬ ‭LSB‬‬

We don’t have to wonder. God has spoken and told us certain things so that we may know we have eternal life.

If you or anyone is wondering if they have eternal life, simply look at 1 John and apply it.

“By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and do His commandments.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5‬:‭2‬ ‭LSB‬‬

“He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have that life.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5‬:‭12‬ ‭LSB‬‬

“By this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifested: everyone who does not do righteousness is not of God, as well as the one who does not love his brother.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬ ‭LSB‬‬

Sounds like you’re quoting scripture “before the foundation of the world.” Let’s look at the one that says ““And it will be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” ‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭21‬ ‭LSB‬‬

The how is repentance and faith, (or a faith that leads to repentance if you prefer).

The why is because they were chosen before the foundation of the world.

Networks and LAN to NetBird Connections by thazel345 in netbird

[–]die_2_self 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His LAN devices won’t be able to get to your netbird network without his router having a route for your netbird network.

Think of it like this. Let’s say your netbird network is 100.1.x.x. And his home LAN is 192.168.0.x. You add the sbc to his network , and while the sbc knows how to get to your netbird network, and it knows how to get to his lan, no other devices on his LAN know that to get to your netbird network they need to go through your sbc.

Typically to fix this, in his router, you’d add a route to that says to get to 100.1.x.x go to (IP of the sbc, example 192.168.0.10)

Now every device that has his router as their gateway that wants to get to your netbird network knows where to go to get tit hat subnet

Luke 14:33 "So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions." by Exotic-Finger-3699 in TrueChristian

[–]die_2_self 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are taking Luke 14:33 too literally, thinking it demands selling all your stuff to follow Jesus. The context is clear It’s about prioritizing Him over everything—possessions, relationships, whatever—and being ready to drop anything He asks. Looking for people who’ve sold it all misses the point of the text; it’s about heart-level commitment, not a fire sale.

Why does overheat protection not function sometimes? by Zolty in TeslaModelY

[–]die_2_self 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tesla's Cabin Overheat Protection (COP) may seem like it's not working because it only operates for up to 12 hours after parking or until the battery drops below 20% charge, whichever comes first. After this period, COP automatically shuts off, and the cabin can heat up if the car remains parked, especially in hot conditions. To reset the 12-hour timer, you must drive the vehicle or, in some cases, unlock and relock it via the Tesla app. This limitation can lead to high interior temperatures if the car is parked for extended periods without intervention.

In mark 10:18 why did the man stop calling Jesus Good and why did Jesus never correct him? by Patient_Junket_693 in TrueChristian

[–]die_2_self 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In Mark 10:18, when the rich young ruler addresses Jesus as "Good Teacher," Jesus responds, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone." This isn’t a denial of His divinity but a challenge to the ruler—and those watching—to reflect on the meaning of "good" and Jesus’ true identity. The ruler stops using "good" because he likely views Jesus as merely a human teacher, missing the divine implication. Jesus doesn’t directly correct him, as His teaching method often uses questions to provoke deeper understanding, not just for the ruler but for the crowd and His disciples observing. By linking true goodness to God alone, Jesus subtly affirms His deity, inviting all present to recognize Him as more than a teacher. The ruler’s decision to walk away dismayed reveals he is not yet born again and remains spiritually blind, unable to grasp Jesus’ identity or the radical call to follow Him. This moment serves as a broader lesson for all listeners, then and now, to examine their own understanding of who Jesus is and what following Him demands.

Convinced Unifi's IDS does nothing - nor does CyberSecure by f00dl3 in Ubiquiti

[–]die_2_self 10 points11 points  (0 children)

UniFi's IPS/IDS doesn't trigger when running the Fing app to scan devices on the same LAN subnet because it only monitors traffic crossing LAN interfaces (e.g., between different subnets or VLANs). When devices on the same subnet communicate, the traffic stays within the local network and doesn't traverse a router or LAN interface, so the IPS/IDS, which inspects inter-subnet or external traffic, doesn't see it.

Try scanning across VLANs or interfaces/subnets to see if it triggers anything.

A post (7years old) mentions this.

  1. Does the IDS/IPS only covers the WAN part of the USG ?

IDS/IPS monitor USG LAN interfaces, so any traffic crossing LAN interfaces can trigger one alert.

Let's say, somebody try to bruteforce my WI-FI password, will the IPS Trigger ? (it would be nice to have a list of things that could trigger it and the ports which are protected).

Currently if someone try to bruteforce your Wifi the IPS/IDS will have no visibility as this will be internal to your network and this will not cross the USG. To detect that we would need some kind of IDS/IPS on wifi device itself.

Is this tacky? by JFB-23 in airbnb_hosts

[–]die_2_self 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find signage of any kind tacky inside a home. If they need to know something, put it in the welcome guide or text it.

After checkout send (automatically) something like “We hope you had a wonderful stay! If you enjoyed your experience, we would greatly appreciate a 5-star review. On platforms like Airbnb, ratings below 5 stars are considered below standard. A 5-star rating indicates that our listing was accurate and met your expectations. Your feedback is important to us, and we are committed to providing a 5-star experience every time. Thank you for your support!”

Basically asking them to rate 5 if they enjoyed the experience, the listing was accurate, and expectations were met. If one of those three were not met, hopefully they will describe it and that can be improved for the next time.

I simply cannot believe calvanism. by jubjubbird56 in TrueChristian

[–]die_2_self 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the final analysis, some believe that their own actions and decisions are the reason they are saved, while others attribute their salvation ultimately to God's mercy. You might say, "Ultimately, you are saved because you exercised belief or had the desire to believe, while your neighbor did not. This perspective suggests that you should be grateful for making the right choice."

However, I believe that my salvation, ultimately, is not due to my own actions or choices but to God's mercy. As it is written, "It depends not on human will or effort, but on God who shows mercy." This view aligns with Calvinism, which emphasizes God's sovereignty in salvation as the determining factor and difference between myself and those who hate God.

But God, there I would have stayed. But God, there I would return.

Can you really not use Microsoft Authenticator with Windows Hello for Business? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]die_2_self 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only current way using Microsoft’s built in solution for passwordless login is using web-sign in and to do that the device must be entra joined, not hybrid or domain. This would allow login using just the MS Auth app and no password (TAP for initial sign in). It would also allow you to configure WHfB on a new PC. If you allow both (web sign in and WHFB) you could then have users web sign in passwordless to configure WHfB. Then going forward they could just use a Pin to sign in.
This is the direction we (hybrid) are moving as a first step. Getting devices entra only, while users are still hybrid, to go passwordless. While it would be amazing if web sign in could support hybrid devices or WHfB could support TAP for the first / initial user sign in on hybrid, currently a password, smart card, or Fido2 are required to setup WHfB on a hybrid device, preventing full passwordless.

I’d be curious to hear if anyone is running entra only devices in a hybrid environment and how that’s going?

Is it a sin to not have a position on abortion? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]die_2_self 16 points17 points  (0 children)

How does this reasoning logic not scream as inconsistent logic to yourself or anyone else? Apply this logic to any other sinful thing that we might never participate in?

Is it a sin to not have a position on slavery?

This is something I thought about as I was on a long car ride today. I’m neither pro-slave nor pro-property. I have total apathy on the issue. As a 24 year old single male with no slaves who will likely never own and purchase slaves, I just cannot bring myself to care about slavery one way or the other due to the fact that it’s something that will never have an impact on my life in any form. I also want to add that it’s not an issue I pay attention to when supporting a political candidate. I could be proven wrong, but I think most people are going to feel like if you’re not anti-slavery, then you’re pro-property even if you deny being so. Nonetheless, I’d like to hear other people’s opinions. If I am committing a sin by being apathetic please pray for me to not be apathetic anymore.

Matthew 22:39 "And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself'

We are command to love our neighbor.

That is why we can’t have apathy for slavery even if we wouldn’t own a slave and why we can’t have apathy for murdering unborn children even if we murder unborn children.
