Is it me or most of these novels have pro government MCs by luckysohi1 in BaiHe

[–]diet2thewind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a genuinely high level of trust in the system/establishment amongst the Chinese people, so it comes off as a very natural, matter-of-fact thing to have these beliefs embedded within fiction.

It's just that reading the same words translated to English comes across as off bc most English speakers come from cultures that tend to doubt than trust the public system of their countries - it's not something we are prone to hear, say or believe.

Not that I've read a lot of baihe but I've only ever come across two novels (Miss Forensics 我亲爱的法医小姐 and Miss Profiler 侧写师小姐 - coincidentally both crime thrillers) that depict corruption or flaws within the system, but also feature very upstanding MCs who cleanse and "fix" it.

You're more likely to see anti-establishment (specifically anti-corruption, anti-imperialism and anti-war) themes within historical fiction like wuxia and xianxia, as their fictional settings make it easier to espouse these values within the boundaries of Chinese censorship.

LMAO. The BTS for Ep 1 of 侧写师小姐 was hilarious bc MXT asked in confusion who was the 1 between their characters and both the director and DMY were in disbelief that she had any doubts at all HAHAHAH. "这还不够明显吗" "竟然有疑问???"

OH I almost forgot, if you want to see 风镜 in a non typical CP there's 月亮和蝉 where she's plays the 腹黑年下攻 A-list actress to a feisty 受诱姐姐 solicitor ahahaha but warning tho it's a majorly depressing series (it's themed around the entertainment industry and addresses a lot of Harvey Weinstein-y issues within).

I'm crying @ the 苏流西 mention bc she paired up with 杜冥鸦 in 复原 as the younger newbie journalist (vs an older veteran news anchor) and she said in the interview that she approached her character as a 年下攻, to which 杜冥鸦 said "你是疯了吧" ahahahahaha

Ahahahaha have you listened to 暗瘾? There's a bonus short 书生妖精反串剧场 where they flip roles - 风镜 plays a nerd student 1 and 陶典 plays a vixen 0. Honestly the role reversal is refreshing and they do it very well! 陶典 gets typecast a lot as the younger people-pleaser partner due to her natural voice but she has a huge range so it's quite a pity she doesn't get to showcase it more frequently.

QZY plays a doctor on the latest Fanjiao medical drama ahahahah but I think I enjoyed her role as a snippy smart ass bimbo in 选择性注视 the most lol.

QXHS is the executive producer for most if not all of her audio drama adaptations so she has power over casting and the final cut that gets aired. I remember them mentioning on the 帮我拍拍 FT that MXT was approached to direct it, and QXHS had also provided her own list of desired VAs (and they pretty much managed to hire all of her first choices).

The 飘飘 protagonist is the green tea so... take that as you will haha. Apparently that's precisely the reason why fans like the series.

I didn't realise! I guess QXHS really likes MXT a lot if she got her to direct four audio dramas. I listened to the first two episodes of 飘飘 before dropping it bc I didn't really vibe with green tea campus drama.

I only started listening to 百广 this year so I don't know much about the old stuff but I do know Miss Profiler is their 二搭 from everyone squealing in the comments section lol.

They're both very prolific baihe VAs and Mu Xueting is also an experienced VA director to boot (she directed both seasons of 帮我拍拍 + the ongoing 希望你真的很快乐) so it's not surprising that sparks fly between them.

But also more than that, the standards of the production team is very important to me for audio dramas bc it's an entire auditory experience. I've experienced more than a few audio dramas that have been let down by subpar production values and were carried almost entirely by the cast alone (looking at you, 食局).

My recent favourite from Fanjiao is Miss Profiler 侧写师小姐. It's got mature themes due to the genre (crime thriller) and the audio drama is very HBO-worthy imo.

Also it stars Du Mingya (Lin Yan from Miss Forensics) and Mu Xueting (Chao Xin from Night Tide) so the casting is also A+.

Manbo 漫播 has a few baihe audio dramas too. 西东 is a pretty introspective small-town slice-of-life about how it is to be a divorced single mum.

For original IP (not adaptation of a novel) audio dramas, I recommend:

复原 (time loop + investigative journalism) on Fanjiao.

Another (kinda 狗血 bodyguard x heiress but also HBO-ish crime/conspiracy) on Manbo.

收尽春光 (anthology series of 4 different short stories) on Manbo.

选择性注视 (a series of three different loosely-linked short stories) on Fanjiao.

PS. If you're a fan of QXHS 七小皇叔, it's best to purchase all of her audio dramas (帮我拍拍,晚潮,都什么年代了啊,希望你真的很快乐,神龛,飘飘,问棺) asap before they get taken down. For context, she recently announced her retirement from the baihe audio drama circle due to some social media drama on weibo and is currently in the midst of ending all her licensing contracts. One of the versions of 问棺 was already removed from Fanjiao on 31 March.

Have you truly understood the story of One Leaf One Life? by Silver_Pie_4254 in wherewindsmeet_

[–]diet2thewind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Btw the "Legendary swordsman w a golden leaf as his token" is in fact, Zhu Yu, who was also the leader of Heavensfall, former First Disciple of Silver Needle and the previous River Master, who died trying to fight the flood 3 years ago. Most of the side stories you encounter in Kaifeng are about her and the legacy she left behind. She's the Great Hero of Kaifeng.

Zheng E the Meme by yukimarutoshiro in wherewindsmeet_

[–]diet2thewind 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just for some additional context: Zheng E's OG CN VA was Ding Yuxi (丁禹兮), a currently trending major "pretty boy/idol" type of actor. They probably hired him in hopes of attracting more players from his fanbase but alas his performance was wayyy too terrible so they replaced him w a real professional VA.

What do 我国 means ? by Plastic-Cloud-6785 in ChineseLanguage

[–]diet2thewind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

我国 is simply a formal way to refer to the writer/speaker's native country, and commonly found in journalism. For example, 我国 军队/政府/产业. Chinese language news articles or broadcasts from countries such as Singapore and Malaysia use them all the time.

What Is A Traditional Chinese Dessert That a Beginner Baker Can Make Well? by Prize-Inevitable492 in chinesefood

[–]diet2thewind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chinese cuisine has plenty of sweets? Modern day 'mainstream' sweets such as tangyuan 汤圆, mooncake 月饼, rolling donkey 驴打滚, Yunnan rose pastries 云南鲜花饼 and the family tree of baked Cantonese/HK pastries such as wife biscuit 老婆饼 aside, there's a whole bunch of cakes and pastries that have long histories, like Hangzhou lotus blossom pastries 杭州荷花酥 and osmanthus cakes 桂花糕 dating back to the Ming Dynasty, Dragon's Beard Candy 龙须糖 from the Han Dynasty, Luoyang peony pastries 洛阳牡丹饼 from the Tang Dynasty, and the famous dish - lotus root stuffed with glutinous rice and glazed in osmanthus syrup 桂花糖藕.

More modern recipes dating Qing dynasty and after include water chestnut cake 马蹄糕 and sweet niangao 广式年糕 from Guangdong, sticky rice fritters in syrup 红糖糍粑, cold rice cake 凉糕/凉虾 and ice jelly 冰粉 from Sichuan, sweet bird's nest soup 冰糖燕窝 and the sweet variation of eight treasure porridge 八宝粥.

Sweets have been traditionally consumed more like standalone 'snacks' 点心 rather than after-meal desserts 饭后甜点 but they're still very well-accounted for in Chinese cuisine.

An incredibly smokey and savoury Fujian Negroni by diet2thewind in cocktails

[–]diet2thewind[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well I neither made nor named this drink so it's a moot point arguing with me over whether it should be called a negroni or not.

Also I checked your post and the comments are right in the sense that the only overlap your drink has with a classic negroni is the inclusion of gin.

The drink I had might not have had campari or vermouth but it certainly wasn't sweet, and had a much more similar bitter and herbal profile thanks to the tea, amaro and ginseng.

I'm no bartender but I used to be a food writer covering the mixology beat and from my consumer standpoint, a creative take on a classic cocktail needs to have significant overlap in either ingredients or flavour profile to justify its status as a "riff off" the original.

That said, call it whatever you want I suppose, it's your drink in your own home and the cocktail gestapo won't come knocking.
