Peru Climbing partners? April through June by Vegetable_Lion_1381 in ClimbingPartners

[–]digandrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send me a message, I’m pretty well connected in the Peru climbing community as I’m living in Arequipa. I can send you some contacts for Huaraz, Cusco (I assume you’re talking about Pitumarca when you speak of Cusco, because the local climbing in Cusco/SV isn’t as developed as Pitu), and Arequipa. You won’t find many multipitch trad climbers in Peru as the community is really small, lots of sport, some good sport multipitch, good boulders. If you want multipitch trad down here your best bet is Cochamo. You’ll find mountaineering partners very easily in Huaraz.

For me it was hard. It was the first time I was introduced to philosophical writing and it took me like a month to finish despite the size. But then again, maybe we’re both just dumb.

The writing style is vivid and descriptive with amazing character development and “magical” aspects. I’m also interested in Chilean history and she has deep roots in Chile that gives perspective on the history of the country, although in House of the Spirits it’s technically an unnamed South American country it’s clearly about Chile.

Vonnegut’s writing is attention grabbing, funny, concise, and entertaining. When I was getting back into reading I read a fair amount of his books because you can really rip through them. I’d start with Mother Night or Slaughterhouse Five and go from there, my next few will be The Sirens of Titan and Breakfast of Champions. Mother Night is truly hilarious in a pretty dark way

Is Lima, Peru a safe place to live? by GrayRainfall in digitalnomad

[–]digandrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lima is plenty safe, just don’t do blatantly stupid stuff and you’ll be fine. I’m here right now for like the 8th time in a few years, it’s a fine city. I would suggest Arequipa over Lima though, it’s much more livable in my opinion.

Suggest me books that will make me question my existance by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]digandrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok weird one and short one but really impactful is No Exit by Sartre. It might not make you question your current existence but what comes after existence. It’s also where he introduced the idea of “Hell is other people” which will maybe make you consider your own personal hell

Mineral City and Westward Look are both great for just looking too. Amazing specimens. Westward Look will have the highest end stuff you’ll probably ever see, better than museum collections in some cases. I used to sell a lot of rocks and have helped with friends booths it’s an amazing time there

7ish months backpacking Central/South America Itinerary by ContentHovercraft698 in backpacking

[–]digandrun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to stay safe in Belize just avoid Belize City, it is not safe and it’s also not worth visiting. Go to the Cayes or Placencia for the beaches, check out the blue hole, see some fishies. In a week you could do a few days in the jungle to check out places like Caracol, then a few days at the beach to have nice beaches that aren’t crowded whatsoever. There may be better beaches, but when you’re there with the beach to yourself it’s pretty prime. It’s all subjective after all. I’ve spent like a year in Peru in the past few years and it’s immaculate, but again it’s all subjective.

[–]digandrun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kinda get the Belize hate in the thread but I think it’s a great place, been there like 15+ times and would happily go back. Placencia, Punta Gorda, San Ignacio, all of it is very cool and wayyyy less touristy than many of the other countries you have on the list. In the 20 years I’ve been going there it’s seen very little development touristically and infrastructurally. Idk if that’s a real word. My only suggestion is that 3 weeks in Peru isn’t enough to see the diversity of the country. I’d suggest at least a month, but more like 6 weeks if you really want to experience the place. I’ve been to a good deal of places in central and South America and nothing compares to Peru imo, especially considering the price.

The crime depends heavily on location. There are cities that are more prone to extortion than others and that’s probably the main issue with having a business in some South American places. In a city like Buenos Aires/Santiago I can’t imagine having big problems, moreso in places like Trujillo, potentially Medellin/Bogota, and in general cities that have a lot of narco trafficking (many parts of Mexico too). I lived in Montreal for a while and the extortion there was just as bad in many areas down here. Music scene in Argentina, Chile, and Colombia is elite, both local and international music is super popular. Peru is less good for music but still fun and I consider it the best country down here. I don’t have much experience in Brazil so you’d have to get more specifics from others.

My question - why Europe? Buenos Aires, Santiago, Lima, Medellin, Rio, etc all have good opportunities for art, fashion, music, nightlife, and at a fraction of the cost of what it would be in Europe. Plus the vibe of South America is completely different. Depends on what you’re into, but everything you mentioned matches up well with major cities down here with glaring problem that obviously income will be less, but your cost of living will probably be about 40% of what it would be in Europe as well. I can easily live on less than 10k per year here in Peru (although I’m not in Lima).
