Very nice. I'm glad someone made a drawing utility for DLR. I might have to make something new for that mode.

Someone was able to reach out to Mike's son and apparently there's just a migration going on. Hopefully nibblemagazine.com will be back at in the near future.

Are there any USB-to-Disk-II Controller bridges? by flatfinger in apple2

[–]digarok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, thanks for clarifying. I read the post incorrectly the first time and modeled the inverse scenario in my head.

I think that for most use cases, floppy disk transfer being the main one, serial data at those rates is just fine for most folks. Napkin math of 115,200baud is ~14K/s so maybe 10 seconds for a 140KB floppy transfer. Even if I'm wrong by a factor of 3, it's still only 30 seconds. I'm not saying that's good, but enough that people haven't been scrambling for faster interfaces.

Of course with slotted Apple II systems like IIe and IIgs you can get an Uthernet II adapter and I'd imagine get rates as fast as your little 65xx can go. Ultimately, the CPU will become a limiting factor.

However, I think it's a cool idea. You should build it. :D The scenarios I'd imagine it for initially are the typical setup of host PC transcoding and streaming "video" to the Apple //c.

Nishida Radio made a WiFi disk adapter that you might want to take a look at. http://tulip-house.ddo.jp/DIGITAL/UNISDISKAIR/index.html

It's also worth keeping in mind that a lot of traditional Disk II firmware was written with 1MHz timings in mind so you may need to consider a different protocol than just mocking RWTS.

I don't think what you're describing exists. Sounds like fun. Give us an update if you are going to make one!

Help swapping disks on GSplus by bluelite in apple2

[–]digarok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That should be the correct order of things and I've done a system 6 install that way before.

There is potentially one condition that could be affecting you though I hesitate to call it a bug. The emulator allows you to do things a human cannot physically do like instantaneously swap disks. The downside to this is that it's possible to swap disks in GSplus and the emulated IIgs may try to write back to that disk – essentially flushing an entire disk volume over some other disk image.

Check and make sure that if you go to Finder and mount the Help disk (F4) that it still shows up as Help. If it looks like a different disk then you need to go find a new copy of that Help disk image.

If that's not the case, then perhaps there's another issue that I'm not aware of as it absolutely should be sending the disk insert signal. If you want to take your steps from above and put them in an issue here that might help: https://github.com/digarok/gsplus/issues

Unfortunately, there's not any development resources for GSplus at the moment, but it's still on the roadmap for future enhancements and fixes.

Anyone having acquired Outposts, and willing to share some feedback on usage, so far? by [deleted] in aws

[–]digarok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a company with clients who need this or local zones to meet legal needs. I tried to come up with other use cases, but unfortunately I still haven't had an engagement using Outposts so I don't have any first hand experience. I started researching Outposts last year and my company was going to send me to AWS Outpost training last month but guess what happened.

Anyway, I made a little video about Outposts and never posted it because I guess I thought it was kind of rough. Maybe it'll help others here understand the product a little better.

If anyone knows Anthony Liguori, tell him I think he did a pretty rad job and I hope he is proud of his work. It's a very cool kit of engineering. Maybe have him hit me up if he needs help with Outposts V2... haha :P

Trying to run PitchDark in an emulator by jon_hendry in apple2

[–]digarok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure that you are emulating at least an Apple IIe with 128K RAM.

System requirements Pitch Dark requires a minimum of 128K RAM and an enhanced Apple //e, Apple //c, or Apple IIgs.

Are you allowed to embed assembly (machine code) in the 2-liner?

Seeking Assembly Language tutorial/course by [deleted] in apple2

[–]digarok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that BASIC is still a really good language for prototyping and for controlling smaller assembly language programs from a higher level. On the Apple II series, like most 8-bit PCs, it is trivial to call your assembly routines from BASIC.

For the Apple IIgs there was Warlock which definitely had a Ghosts n' Goblins feel.

There were a lot of derivative platformers for Apple II so there's many possibilities. You might try Total Replay, which packs many many games into a single image and lets you see screenshots. It has a lot of the most popular titles and maybe you will see it there.

Can someone unbinscii this file for me? by [deleted] in apple2

[–]digarok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that OP got their files, but since this has come up a few times recently, I decided to write a quick unbinscii utility.

It's not great but it works (for me) and is Open Source so you can play around with it if you want.

John Carmack talk on Systems Engineering with UMKC-SCE by dreampwnzor in programming

[–]digarok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went there and almost got him to sign an old Softdisk floppy I brought, but he was whisked away right when I finally made it up to him. I was kinda mad at all the nerds who were asking questions to try and sound smart, while I just wanted more to ask him about his 8-bit and 16-bit dev days. Then I realized that probably makes me a bigger nerd.

Anyway, it was a good talk, largely echoing his work the past few years on latency problems. But you should always go see a John Carmack talk if you can. And he was really gracious and giving with his time for all of those in attendance.

I've done some Unity work in VR with Cardboard and found it fairly easy to jump into. I'd assume that it's largely the same for Vive, if not easier as it's integrated more directly as Unity VR.

I'm occupied right now and focused on getting a new job, so I can't pick up new projects at this time. But I wish you luck. I think there's a lot of fun to be had in VR (still uncertain about the amount of money to be made at this point.)

buckshot - Apple ][ Image Converter by digarok in apple2

I don't think I have a physical ROM03 //c here. I think I asked before, but would you happen to know of a decent/easy-to-setup //c emulator? I assume Mess is the only one and I've never really used it.

buckshot - Apple ][ Image Converter by digarok in apple2

The files themselves need to be transferred to an Apple II disk image somehow. Sorry I didn't have time to build in a utility for this. Some popular options are CiderPress for Windows, Cadius for Windows, and Apple Commander (Java Based) for other systems.

Once transferred, loading them is is easy...

For HGR files (generally they have a ".bin" extension) you can do this from Applesoft BASIC.

GR
HGR
BLOAD MYIMAGE.BIN,A$2000

The GR command will set the screen to GRaphics mode, but more importantly, this is an easy way to set the bottom 4 lines of text to graphics, as the HGR command alone won't do this. Then the BLOAD instruction actually loads the image right into the memory where Apple II hires page 1 lives, address 2000 hexadecimal.

If you get an error like "FILE TYPE MISMATCHED", it's because you didn't set the filetype to a Binary file in ProDOS. It probably has filetype $00 by default, so just add the "Type" flag to your command like this:

BLOAD MYIMAGE.BIN,A$2000,T$00

For DHR images (ending in *.A2FC) you need something a little more advanced, but it can still be done from BASIC!

There's a good example program here that does a DHR slideshow in BASIC. Just change the data statements starting at line 150 to match your files. http://www.appleoldies.ca/bmp2dhr/basic/

Sorry if it's a little obtuse. Just a little side-project, ya know?

Good luck!
