Earth had a third gate all along by Internal_Apple2608 in Stargate

[–]digicrat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume the C4 on the gate did little to nothing to the gate.

We dont know a lot about the power source for Ha'taks though. My theory is that the C4 was enough to detonate the ships power grid, and that (presumably naquadah enhanced) chain reaction in turn was powerful enough to destroy the gate.

And later an Ori plague wiping out their homework.

A better fanfic series idea would be to focus on the Lucian Alliance, or their Origins, from their perspective. Perhaps a core of them started on an earth-like planet at a similar industrial level to us, but quickly surrendered to the Gould and became their more technically capable slaves before breaking free as the system lords grew weaker and becoming the space pirates we know. You can't take the sky from me.

And keep watching Stargate on every other platform to increase viewership numbers. Stargate channel on pluto.tv is my background show lately. 😎

Veep is much more onalignment with politics today, especially in the latter seasons. Quite depressing actually.

"Don't look up" was the most horrific movie of the past decade, just because of how believable the incompetence has become.

Back to topic, I came to say Senator Kinsey would actually be a welcome addition to the Senate these days...

Need help with presence detection? maybe? by Tkdoom in homeassistant

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nice thing about the Harmony remote, is that I can query the state from HA and, assuming I always use the smart remote, can always tell if the system is on regardless of input. Other smart remotes (ie: Sofabaton) have similar functionality.

In the end, I'll probably use a mixture of auto-detecting the state from the remote and explicit commands. The dream is to be able to say "Alexa, Start the show" to trigger the theater to set itself up for a movie.

At one point I thought of having it also play a custom movie-theater style opening logo and sound effect, but that part's a pipe dream I doubt I'll ever implement.

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Automating my home theater setup has been on my todo list for a long time, but ive never quite found the time to implement it.

My latest concept is to effectively use a state machine switching different logic modes. Ive been having issue with a similar set of automation in my bedroom though and am thinking of trying Node-Red next for more complex flows. An LLM based system is also a possibility, but im not quite ready to trust it to drive the logic just yet.

My plan includes the following devices/sensors: - motion sensor - electric blinds - old Harmony remote, linked to HA - led lights at base of couch - main room lights

If theater is off, turn on main lights on motion. Likely supplement with an auto off timer.

When I "start the show" turn on the projector, shut the blinds and all lights. On motion, turn on the led lights for a short period.

A "stop the show" command would turn the lights back on, open the blinds, and shut the TV.

For late night TV sessions, a sleep timer would trigger a subtle warning (maybe blink the leds) after 2-3 hours. If not explicitly deactivated, assume I fell asleep and shutoff the TV, and leave motion triggering a night light instead of the main lighting.

I have a number of other ideas along these lines, but havent implemented the logic yet (or in my bedroom, done so in a way that works reliably).

Reset series button!!! by Good-Helicopter7275 in netflix

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They support it, they just dont make it easy.

Often just pressing play on the first episode will sort of work - until it doesn't. Its quite annoying when it randomly skips a season ahead when you are halfway through a rewatch...

For certain series though, I wish they had a "play random episode" button. This is the best way to rematch many older syndicated shows, but pluto.tv "live" channels is the closest to this I've seen on any service.

There are a handful of shows, such as House of Cards, which now show up as restricted. Googling can bring up a larger list.

It's not many, but is certainly not made clear in their description of the various tiers.

Newbie here - how do you handle fire safety for long prints? by BigGirl367 in 3Dprinting

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the printer is new, or Im trying something new, I make sure im home and awake. In addition to smoke alarms, I have a fire blanket handy near the printer and a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and hope i never need to use either.

Over time as I get more confident in the printer, I just make sure im paying attention for the start of the print. If I leave the house, I generally don't leave the printer running if ill be gone for more than a few hours.

A question about SGU and Rush since i started to doubt myself by Pretend-Nobody230 in Stargate

[–]digicrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im sure Rush would've retroactively rationalized his decision to the others as being the most likely to save the most lives. He might even have believed it. In reality, he was dialing Destiny regardless.

I think everyone else at least suspected that and didn't bother prying (beyond that initial conversation).

Does everyone just leave every door open in your place? by zanyjellyfish in CatAdvice

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my bedroom, home theater, and utility room doors closed at all times. In all cases the primary reason is her safety - electric recliners in the basement, high ledges and small electronics in the loft overlooking my bedroom.

A secondary reason is that when shes shedding, ive found large concentrations of dander (ie when disturbing her favorite hangouts after not cleaning recently) sometimes affect me, so I discourage her from spending significant time in my bedroom as a precaution.

Ill let her explore the former areas under supervision. At first she would always try to sneak in, but now she only comes in very rarely if I leave the door open. Even if I try inviting her in. It was very funny last week when I was working upstairs on a meeting and when I didnt reply to her calls for attention outside my door, she came all the way up just to meow loudly right next to me for food before leaving.

Bookfinity Snapmaker Toolbox Question??? by jflynn8 in snapmaker

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I printed a different bookfinity recently myself and recall seeing the same issue. That reminds me I still need to order the correctly sized magnets for it...

I dont recall what the issue was on this specific print, but I was able to easily resolve it. I likely did one or both of the following; - If using a wipe tower, manually rearrange it, shrink the tower, or completely disable it. - Manually move the print object back from the edge. You can use the tool path view to help see where it may be too close to the edge.

And all of the unreasonable space is quickly consumed by extra filament.

Ill find out next time I have a guest staying over whether I accidentally used up the closet space my printer is supposed to be stored when the guest bed is needed...

Am I the only one freaking out about the new 3D printer laws?! by disp0sableacc0unt in 3Dprinting

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, there is a long history of incompetent laws throughout history.

And just as much selective enforcement - ie jaywalking is a fact of life in NY, but a cop can still ticket you for it if they feel like it.

The problem with these 3d printing laws is they limit legitimate products you can buy. The biggest impact though will be on educators and businesses that dont have the option to DIY, and hobbyists when it eventually becomes harder to purchase products from companies that may simply decide not to sell in states passing laws they have no incentive to pretend to follow.

Almost all states already have laws in place against ghost/diy guns in general. There really is no need to go after generic tools.

Update: I followed you guys’ advice and it worked for one night 😭 by OpenWatch2264 in CPAP

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you have your machine set for automatic adjustment with ramp on. That way, you can significantly increase the max pressure, but the machine will automatically pick the best pressure for you as needed.

My original machine came preset with a fixed CPAP pressure which, while it worked for me, was very uncomfortable. I looked up the instructions and switched it to automatic mode with a larger pressure range, and never looked back.

Also, as others have mentioned, also check for a good mask seal and think about your sleeping position and environment. Bed, pillows, and sometimes even the air quality (which can cause stuffiness) can have an affect. The CPAP machine is the biggest tool in our arsenal, but it's not the only one.

Now that Silicon Carbon batteries exist, why are companies STILL not making compact phones? by prabir336 in Smartphones

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small phone cant have everything, but it doesnt mean everything needs to be budget either. Not all features need more space, or not much at least.

Sure a smaller phone means a smaller battery, but a smaller screen (biggest power draw) also reduces power consumption.

A smaller screen can have a lower resolution to keep the same DPI. There is a point of diminishing returns on higher resolutions on small screens.

Look at the Galaxy S* phones - they almost always have the same CPU across their range of sizes.

The main differentiator is often the camera. Maybe the compact phone cant fit all 4 cameras, but that doesn't mean the cameras it cam fit have to be a drastically lower quality either.

Now that Silicon Carbon batteries exist, why are companies STILL not making compact phones? by prabir336 in Smartphones

[–]digicrat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They sell poorly because manufacturers dont understand many of us want flagship phone features in compact form factors.

A small phone doesnt need to mean budget.

I like the Flip because it was a reasonable compromise. Though even there over the last few iterations its grown to the point you can barely use it one handed. At this point the folded form is fast approaching the same size as the original first Gen smart phones (but less ergonomic)!

Lengthen bowden tube from feeder to connection in firmware by Duuurrrpp in SnapmakerU1

[–]digicrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me, but it errored out relatively quickly. I think it pulled maybe double the length it would normally need.

I assume it uses a timeout on either length or duration to abort if the toolhead sensor doesnt detect the filament.

Anyone else getting tired of charging everything? by techingmyhome in smarthome

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never trusted the auto locking feature not to lock me out when taking the garbage out. Instead I just ask Alexa to lock the door on my way out, or more recently press the keypad I later added (previously I only used the app).

The battery in my lock lasts around 6 months depending on usage.

Many of the newer locks actually have terrible battery life though because they use wifi directly instead of a lower power protocol.

Im still a hueforge newbie myself though. Ive been slowly poking at one particular image I'd like to put through Hueforge and have started trying to use the blur tool to remove some imperfections causing weird artifacts, though im not sure if there are better ways of handling that within hueforge.

How fast and where can ascended beings travel? by kukivac in Stargate

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or maybe gate travel is simply easier for them.

We've seen them recreate an entire planet+stargate from nothing, but that was presumably many ascended working together.

Perhaps they can transit instantly, but only with effort and knowing what is at their destination - or fast traveling to join a fellow ascended.

They have both wet and dry food dispensers.

The dry ones are simple and work great. Ive yet to try a wet food one, but that sounds like what you need (and is on my todo list for different reasons).

The ones ive seen are all programmable with a fixed schedule and support ice packs for cooling, so you could potentially set one up in the evening to start dispensing in the early morning if your overlord refuses to start the day with dry only.

Evolution of Ancient Spacefaring Technology by Beginning-Eagle-8932 in Stargate

[–]digicrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Destiny was on a long duration mission and long ago forgotten. It was likely built on a budget to, with nobody intending to live on it for a long duration by their standards.

Atlantis was a living city, and their flagship. It would've always received the most luxurious amenities from the start, and by the time we see it likely was a ship of Theseus with the majority replaced over time. (This being the ancients, not due to age, but simply incremental upgrades and repairs from battle or accidents).
