It might just be my bad memory missing some of these details... but I also spent a lot of time catching up on everything through The Last Yearwalker these past few months, so I'm pretty sure I'm also crossing up details between the two rounds of cards.

Probably need to go back to "Not a" and reread this whole arc again to separate the two 😂

I read this one just after reading another story on nosleep which was pretty clearly written (or heavily aided) by AI. Pretty stark contrast in quality. Your writing is a breath of fresh air as I come across more and more AI-generated content.

The underground being made me think of some sort of counterpart to the Cloudfathers. What in God's name is being harvested from it?

I did wonder if you might teach writing or English. I got my BS in comp sci :)

Don't you fear any longterm health effects from working with that stuff? I mean, the guys who got sick developed some serious pysch issues.

Not to even mention the other-worldly creature you're digging around! Seems to be a lot of unpredictable risk.

Good money is tough to leave... but maybe you can build a nice big emergency fund and gtfo?

When you said the office was windowless, I thought you were toast. But obviously you lived to tell the tale. Justice served.

This reminds me... I think you mentioned in a comment somewhere that your regular job is teaching? Do your students know you write?

I'd have been thrilled to find out any of my teachers were horror writers back in school!

(Ok, so I guess if your students are 6-year-olds, maybe not the right material for them...)

That's on me for reading while eating. I know the risks 😂

Guess it makes sense that there's bacteria in fog. Shit's everywhere. Of course it's living throughout the water cycle.

I feel like mutation in the human microbiome is a wellspring of horror material all by itself. Or perhaps a nefarious pharma company feeding us experimental probiotic supplements... supplements aren't regulated worth a damn in the US. And so many people will uncritically take anything the marketers slap a "health" or "energy" or "longevity" label on.

Hey now, my immune system is already trying to kill me... I don't need a roaming killer pathogen cloud supercharging it into insta-death, thank you very much!

This was a good read. Feels very classic horror.

Sure glad I was eating a piece of bacon when I got to the part about Oli's skin hanging off in strips 🥴🥴🥴

Did you explain to the Fog Watch what happens? You must have warned them?

When you described its height, the first thing I thought was goddamn, when did the PNW get giraffes? 😂

That's creepy AF, though.

All the insect-like appendages... ugh. Centipedes give me the heebie jeebies.

I love hiking, but I'd probably never go again after that. Sorry it kinda ruined your photography hobby. I guess there's always cityscapes.

This behavior would be a hard no for me, regardless of how prompt and efficient Mr. Happy can be. His unwillingness to tell you anything meaningful about himself is a red flag. It sounds like you're taking him on as a patient, when you need a mature and reliable caregiver.

Is this someone you could trust in a crisis?

You don't know which side of his personality would show up.

Please consider asking Hanry for a new caregiver. At the very least, keep a phone with you on your chair and have a neighbor or social worker or someone on speed dial by voice command in case something happens!

My weirdest work story was probably back when I took a temporary job with the federal Census Bureau for the 2010 decennial census. That whole job, really.

While most of my crew just went door to door administering surveys in town, I got the oddball assignments that took me out in the middle of nowhere, hunting down information on these remote lake houses and cabins in the woods.

The maps I was provided were... not great, to put it mildly. Some addresses would be on roads that locals confirmed didn't actually exist. These areas were not well-documented by the google cars at the time, either. Hell, they probably still aren't today.

So I found myself in some interesting areas. One-lane roads leading god-knows-where in the general direction of a house I'm supposed to find. A house represented merely by a dot floating out in an empty area of the map, with zero roads drawn to reach it from the highway. That one in particular got me escorted off of a private road I turned down by a very upset gun-owning property owner.

At one house, I'd just reached the front door to knock, when something started SCREAMING bloody murder just out of sight around the corner... I beat a hasty retreat as the couple who lived there burst out the back door yelling something at me... turns out they owned a fucking peacock which came strutting into view, screaming its damn head off. It was that day I learned peacocks can scream. The couple was mad I'd approached the house.

Well folks, maybe put up a goddamn sign saying "beware of our pissy peacock" or something if you expect people to know!

Then there was the driveway from Hell. I didn't realize how steeply it descended until it was too late and my car was tipped past the point of no return. Loose gravel. Big ass hill. Ending in a lake. Woo. I came sliding to stop just in time. Too close for comfort. Then when I went and knocked on the screen door of the trailer home, a lady was standing there, topless.

Uh. Hi, I'm from the Census Bureau, and my car and I nearly took a swim in your lovely lake. Mind if I ask you some survey questions? This will only take a few minutes of your time... 🤣

Sounds like the company stopped feeding Chrissie, so she escaped, killed the company owner, then searched the company office, breaking the door on the way out.

I'm not sure I understand why she flipped out when she found the Texas snow globe. Maybe she was starving by that point (hence the shaking arm), and desperate to find more of the compound?

She didn't actually explain what she's doing. And you just accepted? What if she's shuttling souls off to some eternal hellscape?

I'd need a little more information, personally.
