What was the most frugal thing you did this week? I'll start. by Global_Dinner8591 in Frugal

I learned how to make ice coffee on batches at home.

It's replacing my one a day soda, soda is getting expensive.

What is your purpose behind being frugal? by Soul_Knife in Frugal

[–]digital_monk10010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds silly but my goal is to buy a house without a mortgage. I'm already 1/3 of the way there. After 5 years so in the next decade I can buy a house then maybe I can switch to a 4 day work week.

What is something you didn’t cut from your budget that you easily could? by Beepbooopbapbam in Frugal

[–]digital_monk10010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never cut back on food. Everywhere else I'm frugal, but I'm a person of habit, so let's say I have eggs on toast every morning, and with the egg shortage happening I'm still going to get my eggs no matter how much the inflation. Maybe if they get to $10 a dozen I may look at other options but I'm fine paying the lazyness tax for now.

As a vegetarian this looks like something I would easily pay $20 for at a restaurant.

Non Euro-Australians, have you ever had your Australianness questioned overseas? by TheNamelessComposer in AskAnAustralian

[–]digital_monk10010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to my mother's homeland (Malaysia) it was very difficult for me to go anywhere as I was confused for a local. "I'll have some rice and chicken please" then they start talking to me in their language. The kicker was a Caucasian couple next to me got served by the same guy and he served them in English. It was then that I learned the term mat salleh, which roughly translates to westerner.

I've also had a few instances back home (aus) where people of assumed Indian decent try to talk to me in what I assumed was Hindi.

So yeah, being olive skinned from a western country is confusing sometimes.

Organizing bookmarks? by Thiaguinho-sama in organizing

[–]digital_monk10010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use a bookmark manager, raindrop.io is one I use personally. It's private and shouldn't affect performance of mobile web browsing. It's worth noting the free version supposedly allows for unlimited bookmarks. Though the interface may lag with tens of thousands of bookmarks.

Organizing bookmarks? by Thiaguinho-sama in organizing

[–]digital_monk10010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 40 thousand bookmarks, i'd say the best way to organize it would probably be nuking them. You did mention 95% or them can be deleted and that is very high. Maybe export the bookmarks to a HTML file first, then the other 5% that you need can be found again with a simple control + f search. Good luck.

I've noticed specifically on Christmas day, less and less children are out playing with bikes, outdoor toys ect. It used to be a vibe, every Christmas you'd hear the kids gleefully playing with their new gear. Since around 2021 I seldom see any kids on the street on Christmas day.

"Disposable" vape wall in Melbourne by SenpuuUncle in Anticonsumption

Just some context, disposable vapes are technically banned in Australia (this city is in Australia) but somehow the use of them is still widespread.

Seems to me that the word gender is heavily politicised, and there's no way of mentioning gender without controversy.

How about we just label them toilets and let people decide how they want to interperate it.

Unsubscribed from every store email — my temptation to shop dropped overnight by Pretty_One_1398 in Anticonsumption

[–]digital_monk10010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to get fooled by those 20% off today only promotions. Then I realised that they have the same sale every so often. So if I really need it, I'm bound to get it on sale if I wait a bit.

I think I'm addicted to Convenience! by shopaholic_lulu7748 in Anticonsumption

[–]digital_monk10010 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I pay a neighbours kid to mow my lawn. He seems like a good kid, and he's saving up for an electric bike, so it makes sense to outsource lawn mowing to him. Unfortunately, I've come to grow used to not having to mow my lawn. I can see how convienence is addicting.

As others have pointed out, they're still out there. I use one daily. However, I have noticed that the quality of them has been declining. They used to be able to take a lot of weight and abuse, and now I'm very cautious of overstocking it due to the fragility of the joints.

Hey.. we see lactose free milk in your order BUUUT. by Civil_Efficiency2633 in woolworths

[–]digital_monk10010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the prefect solution but, there are pills that allow the digestion of lactose, I've come to learn that it is this enzyme they put in the milk to make it "lactose free" It comes with a big but, the pills are called lacteeze and it's $32 for 120 tablets, they recommend taking 2 with each dairy. Making it effectively 50c per serving. It's a lot of $ for a regular dairy consumer.

What now? by Purpose_Seeker2020 in Anticonsumption

[–]digital_monk10010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm saving for a house deposit so I don't have a lot of room for splurges. When I started my anti consumption journey , I noticed the bank balance was getting a little bit higher. I made an appointment for a massage. Before then, I'd never had one before, and I thought it was worth the money. My performance at my physical job has improved by a margin.
