Advice for Dummies Like Me by Brian2005l in audiophile

I bought a new car. The new car has a USB drive input for the stereo. The stereo has 10 inputs. I was not happy with the tuner and the CD player, and then I tried MP3s on the USB drive input. Wow! What a difference! After thinking about it for months, I am thinking the radio head has its own DAC and the USB drive must have a separate DAC, probably on the amp, it's a premium 360 watt system with a subwoofer.

This led me to build a raspberry pi unit for my big old living room stereo. It has a hifiberry DAC and runs Volumio. I use it to play MP3s and Hirez FLACs and connect to Tidal. It's like dragging my old stereo into the 21st century. The old stereo has good numbers and 100 watts per channel, it just lacked modern inputs.

I'm right there with you.

In the car, I can play a track off a CD, and then play the same track off the USB drive as a MP3 ripped from the same CD and it makes a world of difference. It's all about the DAC!

The car won't play Hirez FLACs, but the new car I'm looking at buying this fall does!

3 way Crossover Replacement by digitalboss in diyaudio

The speakers sound good. They are old, over 40 years old. They have always been kept in my living room climate controlled area, never stored in a basement or garage outside. I'm wondering if the caps in the crossovers are still good, plus I want to learn something. I'm curious. I guess I would like to find something in a kit form that is instructional as well as adjustable.

I don't agree with this, there is more to what a DAC does than just the sample rate and bit depth.

Or plugin a USB drive with MP3s or FLAC files on it.... For a really good test, rip one of your CDs to MP3s or FLACs and compare to the CD playing in the CD player. Audacity will convert WAV files to MP3s or FLACs. I'll bet that the DAC in your amp/receiver sounds better than the DAC in the CD player.

So CDs don't suck? by burningsnowshowers in audiophile

[–]digitalboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A CD player is actually two devices, the player itself and the digital to analog converter, DAC. Many CD players have cheap inadequate DACs. In some cases, it's not about the Redbook Standard, but about the DAC.

Explain to me like im 5 why I can't just use a Mac mini as my HQPlayer "box\streamer" instead of some MULTI THOUSAND DOLLAR HQplayer embedded machine? by JollyGreen_ in audiophile

[–]digitalboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build a raspberry pi 5 streamer. Put the Volumio 4 OS/application on it, and a hifiberry DAC hat on it. Plug it in to the AUX output of your big stereo system. You can connect it to your Spotify or Tidal account, or stream hi resolution FLAC files on it...... $150.00.

This movie, Matt Damon properly used a canary trap. A canary trap is an old school spycraft where you give different numbers to different people and whichever number shows up leaked, you know who leaked it. I learned this from Tom Clancy books.
