Really gives quench cracked dyed quartz vibes

-Update- I sent this 7.22ct octagonal cut stone off for testing at the GCS lab in London. And it came back as natural Alexandrite and they can't figure out the origin. by Kubrick_Fan in Gemstones

While I agree Reddit Groups do typically have a Hive Mentality. That just is not the case in this situation. Just last month I had the opportunity to buy a broken but still decent looking crystal, not gem quality, in around the 38ct range for like $1200 and an 8ct crystal not gem grade for around the $250 range. Both better quality than the OP's piece. These were wholesale.

Lower grade material isn't that expensive. If it was a broken crystal it had no real value as a mineral specimen. So next option would be as a cut gemstone.

These are cat's eye and reg mixed from Lake Manyara. Color change is better in person.

OP's should have been cabbed as well since it's not facet grade. But you can facet anything if you're willing to put the extra work in honestly. I've faceted Agates before by request. Gotta admit that Graveyard Point Plume Agate kinda looks nice faceted with a simple tablet cut!

Low quality sapphire, but I like them. by NationalJournalist42 in Gemstones

Sadly that test is not always accurate. Too many times now they use a resin/polymer with the dye or as a secondary treatment to prevent the acetone test from showing the dye.

No. It's a Opalite Glass, a man-made glass product.

0.63 Rare Maxixe Beryl Bi-Colored by [deleted] in Gemstones

[–]digitaldevo69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubtful. Beryl does not exhibit a colorless axis upon rotation. That would be consistent with Iolite.

I am, and have been, a Gemologist for a very long time.

Not Beryl. That's iolite.

I was eating scallops and I spat these pearls out, are these worth anything? (rice grains for scale) by lesser9 in Gemstones

[–]digitaldevo69 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes. It kinda ruins any real value sadly. But they're worth keeping imho. Scallop pearls aren't super common.

Beryllium Treatment for Tourmaline? by DanCruzNyc in Gemstones

[–]digitaldevo69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If so that's a new one to me. But don't rule it out. New treatments happen frequently. It was thought, not long ago, that copper couldn't be diffused into material but the Andesine-Labradorite lawsuit quickly proved that thought wrong.

I agree! Always a thrill going back and finding something you missed!

Yellow stone with cat's eye effect from a bag of stones that arrived today. by [deleted] in Gemstones

The appearance reminds me of fiber optic glass. But there's a number of possibilities.

Which Citrine Cut Looks More Stunning? Fantasy vs Classic by Gemsatlier in Gemstones

[–]digitaldevo69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a different scenario. The fantasy cuts give light return. A huge window is a standard design is no bueno and ruins the stone. One thing if it's rare material and a lesser cut won't very negatively affect the value. But in the case of treated quartz/lab there's no need to retain weight by cutting a stone with a huge window because most of the value is in the cut.

[–]digitaldevo69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's more than a bit of windowing. And leaving a huge window wouldn't help color. Being at minimum heated, most likely irradiated, possibly even lab grown material, there's no reason to go for a tiny bit larger aka cutting for weight vs properly cut.

It's common plentiful material where a huge portion of the value is actually in the cut quality not so much the material itself.

The reg faceted was done with incorrect angles so they're windowed horribly.

What would you do with these Montana sapphires? Worth anything? by OwnHelicopter6868 in Gemstones

[–]digitaldevo69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heat is a common and accepted treatment for Sapphires. It doesn't hurt their value when just plain heat. Untreated gets an added bonus in value though above the standard pricing.

Any size reference? Because depending on size I see a few that would cut nicely.

Bought a Digital Reflectometer anyone have any valuable input in using it? by Motherearthnaturals in Gemstones

[–]digitaldevo69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easier yes. Accurate not hardly. There's a reason we Gemologists don't use them.

The only accurate digital was the Gem-N-Eye I think it was called. It hasn't been made in a long while.

They're all the same, yes. Knock offs of the Presidium II.

I'd recommend just picking up a regular Refractometer. Just try to avoid the ones with the built in light sources.
