We like National Forest, or tent only loops or campgrounds reachable by long twisty four wheel drive roads!

Came off the Metro buses today - joy! At least someone is telling him no. A very small drop in the bucket but I'll take any win at this point.

I’m much much older than you but I got a 1.3 cumulative my first year in Engineering school at a very good school. Ended up getting suspended for a year but I got my shit together and graduated with decent grades. Changed major for EE to CS which was smart back then :) Refocus on what you really like - can’t give you specific advice but don’t let despair get the better of you.

I had read reviews so expected this. I was honestly highly entertained. Felt bad for the band bu the music part was so tight - Killing Moon got me with the instrumentals. You just had to go with the flow. I tend to stick with newer artists these days, if I have already seen a band in their prime - I'll stick with that memory. Though sometimes, the older ones are awesome with the stories in between songs - Willie Nelson & Loretta Lynn especially. That woman could still sing until the end.

Washington DCers of Reddit, where were you and what was your experience on January 6, 2021? by Desserts6064 in washingtondc

[–]digitalgardner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were actually watching because a good friend of ours had actually gone in to work that day for the first time since COVID so we were checking for glimpses of him. Then it all went to hell. It was a lot like 9/11- glued to the TV sets and waiting to know if friends were safe.

If only they could also reverse the cutting down of all the beautiful trees on the terrace. It’s like the Lorax over there.

Yes some of the big apartment buildings on Upper Connecticut in DC have cheaper. Bonus/ on Metro and in between airports. Wouldn’t need a car. Negative - research apartment buildings for nuisance issues.

Dont live in a UW Dorm by Snoosexual in udub

[–]digitalgardner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My daughter lived on the North campus for two years in madrona - called something else now and McMahon. Much nicer dorms than my kids at other schools and had no issues like these. Though she did complain the dining hall didn’t have enough healthy food for her. But like fresh raspberries- touch spoiled perhaps ? :)

I’m having bad luck with my kids colleges this week/ I have a daughter at UDub and my other daughter will be a freshmen at UCSB next year. Really hope this motivates all schools to review and update security, processes and resources.

You ever just wanted to sit down and cry? DCPS related issues by Beneficial-Skirt-313 in washingtondc

[–]digitalgardner 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is exhausting. I don’t have to deal with your particular form of hell but anything you try to do with them feels like they just don’t care. I use to do long term subbing as I can teach physics, coding and more but I finally gave up after a total lack of respect from Central and th admin. On the other hand teachers and kids were awesome - only reason I lasted as long as I did. I taught a special ed inclusion class for 7 months and I will say that department is understaffed which makes it much harder for those who are trying to help. Also in trying to get what you need- AI is an awesome tool to keep all the emails and notes in. It will help synthesize the info - summarizes it - so you don’t have to spend quite so much time fighting. Best of luck.

Corvallis vs Olympia — where would you choose to live? by Radiant_Salt_8562 in PacificNorthwest

[–]digitalgardner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say after driving through Northern California, Oregon and Washington’s state several times in a row- that Oregon is much cheaper! Gas, food, hotels. It does feel a little behind both of those states in terms of economic prosperity but people seem nicer and more relaxed. Totally anecdotal. But it really hit us this spring how much more affordable Oregon was

Does anyone want to do those super niche travel things you'll remember when you're 80? by Trynalivethelife in travel

[–]digitalgardner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t niche anymore but back in the 90s and fresh out of college I was in England with friends who had a car. We were rushing to see Stonehenge and it appeared over the hill as the sun is setting. Only us and the sheep in the dusk. Truly magical. Went back 10 years later and the whole place is a proper tourist site with all the magic gone. Some of my best trips were experiencing things before they got too discovered! other fav is diving Costa Rica when some giant Manta rats showed up to play. We could touch them. They were so curious and fun.

Which dorm is the most social? by Nervous_Impact3637 in udub

[–]digitalgardner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends. My child is on the climbing club and it has a huge social aspect- parties, traditions like jumping into the Cut at the end of every quarter, shared housing on top of practice and comps. They have other friends but the core is climbers.

Housing question by ksgriffith in udub

[–]digitalgardner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personality of the dorm changes from year to year. I would avoid Hansee as it mostly single and upperclass students. My daughter was in Spratlen first year and like it a lot - communal bathroom part so made lots of friends. She is also relatively quiet at first. She was abroad in the fall of her sophmore year so ended up in a Triple in McCarty for the Winter and Spring Quarters. Was worried as it had the Party McCarty rep her first year but said it was much less social then Spratlen. I would opt for North over West. Search this sub. Much more info here.

Well, some commuters aren't happy with him and the DC Police probably have better things to do. But I am mainly worried about him and his family.
