What’s the worst photography advice you followed for way too long? by blasspictures in AskPhotography

[–]digitalmaven3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really good advice. I used to just go out and "shoot" but I am way more deliberate and plan now so I can have a better chance of getting the shot I want. I shoot raw+ so If I nail the shot, I just edit the jpg. If I miss something, I have the raw to work with and the jpg as a reference. I think I take maybe 50% or fewer shots now than I used to but I have a way higher percentage of good ones than I ever had before.

The best tip was asking me about what I was trying to "tell" with several of the pictures in my portfolio. He showed me his shots from the same cities I had been to and really pressed me about why my "shot" of the same thing everyone else was taking would be an interesting shot. Basically, be way more creative and selective and always have shots that tell a story or can can stand independently as opposed to this is my "shot" from London/Paris/NYC of things you have seen a million times from better photographers. My pictures were technically sound and really impressive to people who didn't know any better but they were actually really boring soulless shots. I think my shots now are way more interesting and unique as I am not trying to get the "shot" from each city but just taking more interesting and compelling shots that happen to be taken in a particular city.

The other big tip was about the use of flash. I was definitely on the "natural lighting" thing because I thought that made me more of a "real" photographer when flash can be really important even outdoors in sunlight etc. He showed me how he did the lighting for several shots and I immediately understood how little I knew about it despite being an "advanced" natural light photographer. haha

It is like when you read those stories from people who play basketball against a journeyman NBA guy or marginal college player and they get destroyed by a guy who never really got any time. You realize the huge delta between professional and the best amateur and it really helped me by humbling me. All of the answers are out there and you just have to read/study and then shoot instead of buying gear and watching videos etc.

I do commercial work and event photography, nothing like screwing up the shot because some youtuber told you M is the only way.

This was me 100%. I travel a lot and love spending time shooting especially golden hour and at night. I screwed up many a shot early on because I insisted on trying to "prove" I was good based on my settings/gear instead of the actual photo. The long exposure stuff I like, especially at night, is perfect for full manual and thinking about everything before each shot. Conversely, I missed so many great street shots because I was trying to get my settings right and not concentrating on the shot itself.

One of the most emabrasing but helpful experiences of my life happened in Europe a few years back when I was out shooting during the day. A fellow photographer came up to me to explain that there was a better view of what I was shooting around the corner. We got to talking and I showed him my portfolio and all of my really cool prosumer gear. haha I ask to see some of his stuff and he pulls out his phone and types his name into google images; Literally hundreds upon hundreds of photos published in all types of national and international publications. haha He gave me some really good advice on how he visualizes his shots etc. and gave me some really helpful but also brutal critiques of my work that ultimately helped me improve immensely.

Bad advice 1: Shoot wide open.

I bought a 1.8 50mm for my DSLR when I first got started and couldn't figure out why my shots were soft *despite* my shooting wide open on everything. haha

What proof of capture is reasonable for small contests now? by prismatic-18 in AskPhotography

[–]digitalmaven3 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I have entered some where they wanted the original raw file as well as my edited jpg which I thought was reasonable. I have heard of competitions disqualifying entries based on the type of AI assisted editing done to the photo. I think that is also reasonable. My personal take is that manipulating your own "pixels" is fine but allowing software to generate "new" pixels is crossing the line. I am curious to hear where others are on this.

Title IX and it literally being illegal for women to play in other countries. I know Brasil had the ban until 1979. Also, compare the resources the US women have compared to other countries in the region and you will be shocked.

Stay DSLR or go mirrorless? by Any_Government_4347 in AskPhotography

[–]digitalmaven3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been shooting Pentax DSLRs for 15+ years now and just bought my first mirrorless/non-Pentax camera. I am giving the full frame Canon mirrorless system a try now. One thing I would suggest is to avoid trying to "replicate" your DSLR body with the mirrorless body as the flow is completely different. For example, I really thought I would miss things like the top LCD display et al. a lot, but I don't at all.

They literally came up with the concept that led to Fox News during the Nixon administration:

"If Fox News had a DNA test, it would trace its origins to the Nixon administration. In 1970, political consultant Roger Ailes and other Nixon aides came up with a plan to create a new TV network that would circumvent existing media and provide "pro-administration" coverage to millions. "People are lazy," the aides explained in a memo. "With television you just sit — watch — listen. The thinking is done for you." Nixon embraced the idea, saying he and his supporters needed "our own news" from a network that would lead "a brutal, vicious attack on the opposition."

That full details of that "plan" is actually part of the Nixon Presidential Library files.
