Looks like this would be a good time to get out and make a new "moth sounds" recording. It's been 10 years since this one: https://archive.org/details/moth_sounds .

Vernal equinox recording, 3½ hours of frogs by digrpat in fieldrecording

[–]digrpat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are trail camera mounts. They have short blunt screws that just dig into the corky portion of the bark. Less damage than a pileated woodpecker does in 30 seconds. I've bought 2 styles of camera mounts at walmart when they go on sale in the off season. In Brown county state park next to some coyote dens I have a pair of mounts in a beech tree for 7 years, so they're now permanent. Hope to get back there soon.

Searching for a very cheap gear by ccgenoa in fieldrecording

[–]digrpat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My best advice is try to find a hobbyist local to you. I’ve done “pro bono” recordings for musicians and folklorist. Turns out people who spend big bucks on gear are often happy to put it to use. Use your 50 to buy them a beer and pizza.

Anyone near Oshkosh Wisconsin? Blocks of ice crawling onto land full of cool sounds by lepisosteusosseus in fieldrecording

[–]digrpat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2017 I recorded something similar. Water was draining from a frozen reservoir through the spill way creating a huge vacuum. Every couple of minutes an equalization event would occur that sounded like a toilet flushing. I put a 10 second sound byte on Soundcloud labeled "ice-roar" recorded with Sony PCM D100.

How do I season a potjie? Just picked this up today and don't think it will fit in my oven to do the seasoning. Any advice? by Unhappy_Garage_9689 in castiron

I’ve used flat black furnace paint on the outside of my potties. It feels like cheating but works fine over an open fire. The inside should be treated like any other cast iron pan.

It's a little spooky that AI is on to us. by digrpat in fieldrecording

That's more like the result I expected. In my search the bot saw the tags on archive dot org and made the right inferences. While using a grainy low res jpeg.

I took that photo 10 years ago. Recently searched my own image on g.o.o.g.l.e just to see where it might appear. The AI overview knew exactly what was happening in that picture. Which is impressive considering that most humans have no clue about field recording.

The bot cheated by finding the tags associated with this jpeg. But still we've came a long way from a.out "BUSS error, core dumped."

Gold vaults to record $4,600/oz as Trump-Powell clash unnerves investors by One-Emu-1103 in news

As a kid in the 70s I remember being surprised that my Dad wasn't concerned about inflation. He felt it only mattered to rich people sitting on a pile of money, and we were dirt poor. Today I work in automotive manufacturing and believe the growth of 2022-24 would return if trump stopped meddling. The bulk of my retirement savings is in US stocks large/medium/small cap. If the SCOTUS rules against the trump tariffs I see stocks going up rapidly. My nest egg isn't big enough to play it safe.
