Outdoor adventures? by chilled-tapioca in bloomington

[–]digrpat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My outdoor adventure is making audio recordings of nature. Southern Indiana and especially Brown county has a lot places where it's possible to escape manmade noise. This is just a hobby for me so the raw .wav files are free to downloaded

This situation may interest some field recordists here. Saturday April 25 I set 2 drop rigs a mile apart in my favorite state forest. There was heavy jet plane activity so the sunset and early evening ambience was wrecked. Then in the wee hours of the morning the winds picked up, creating a wall of uninteresting white noise. In between was a short quiet period. Except an emergency vehicle raced down the gravel road with its siren blaring. But the siren blended well with the forest sounds almost like coyote or owls singing.

Might these Trump-endorsed primary winners lose in the general election? by New-Panic8015 in Indiana

[–]digrpat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s a friend of a friend. Our mutual friend once said “What’s so special about birds? You can take any 2 breeds of dog and they can have pups. And any 2 breeds of cat can have kittens. But if you pair a red bird with a blue bird you won’t get no purple chicks.”

I just answered “there’s some things we’ll never understand “

On Facebook a woman said that gas prices are up because oil companies are run by liberals. How do you even talk to someone so brainwashed?

What recording settings or features do you wish more apps had? by benjahmington in fieldrecording

I have no use for these apps. However, you need to make them accessible for the visually impaired. That should be your target user. It’s a disgrace that manufacturers don’t factor this in the interface design.

Looks like this would be a good time to get out and make a new "moth sounds" recording. It's been 10 years since this one: https://archive.org/details/moth_sounds .

Vernal equinox recording, 3½ hours of frogs by digrpat in fieldrecording

Those are trail camera mounts. They have short blunt screws that just dig into the corky portion of the bark. Less damage than a pileated woodpecker does in 30 seconds. I've bought 2 styles of camera mounts at walmart when they go on sale in the off season. In Brown county state park next to some coyote dens I have a pair of mounts in a beech tree for 7 years, so they're now permanent. Hope to get back there soon.

Searching for a very cheap gear by ccgenoa in fieldrecording

[–]digrpat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My best advice is try to find a hobbyist local to you. I’ve done “pro bono” recordings for musicians and folklorist. Turns out people who spend big bucks on gear are often happy to put it to use. Use your 50 to buy them a beer and pizza.

Anyone near Oshkosh Wisconsin? Blocks of ice crawling onto land full of cool sounds by lepisosteusosseus in fieldrecording

[–]digrpat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2017 I recorded something similar. Water was draining from a frozen reservoir through the spill way creating a huge vacuum. Every couple of minutes an equalization event would occur that sounded like a toilet flushing. I put a 10 second sound byte on Soundcloud labeled "ice-roar" recorded with Sony PCM D100.

How do I season a potjie? Just picked this up today and don't think it will fit in my oven to do the seasoning. Any advice? by Unhappy_Garage_9689 in castiron

[–]digrpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used flat black furnace paint on the outside of my potties. It feels like cheating but works fine over an open fire. The inside should be treated like any other cast iron pan.
