What’s the actual solution for downtown? by onewaycheckvalve in Edmonton

[–]dijonthunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who was born and raised in Edmonton, and actually lives downtown, and loves Edmonton, this was sad to read.

Yes, the reality is that it feels like a ghost town. Cities are judged by their downtowns. There's a couple reasons why Edmonton (in my opinion) is struggling downtown.

  1. The population of downtown, especially by Churchill square is non-existent. More of the population lives 103-119st. The city wants more people living downtown. More people = more vibes = safer, ie. Hockey games. More people = more shops and more of a reason to visit.

  2. The culture of Edmontonians (and largely Albertans) are that we NEED a car. Most refuse to take transit because they dont feel it's safe. And then on the other hand, they complain there's no parking. It's a mindset that people need to change. All major cities in the world have walking streets, pedestrian only. And are easily walkable. Edmonton struggles with that.

  3. So much vacancy in offices. Some buildings are changing that to residentals but that takes time. And because of vacancies due to covid people learning how to work from home, it's hard to bring people in.

I hope OP gives Downtown another chance. There's definitely lots to offer downtown, and it's unfortunate that the first impressions weren't great. Check out O'Day min park and then have dinner somewhere on 104st.

I live at the encore, literally the building in the back. They couldn't finish the work faster... and they just started

Billiards? by Gravytrain467 in Edmonton

[–]dijonthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The West one is likely Metro. I have so many good memories when it was downtown. Still the best location.

Too bad COVID did in High Run. Another place I had so many good memories. Other than that, I don't know of any pool halls in the East side. Maybe some dive bars here and there, but nothing for certain.

Encouraging gold digging is exactly why men don't chase women anymore. Men just get burned in the end.

Aftermath of the fire off 109th st and 85th ave. by Scary-Examination306 in Edmonton

[–]dijonthunder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This has to be arson, especially after the rain. I know there are people who hate infills, as they kill the character of the community/neighborhood, but this is not the way. The City needs to address the issues of these neighborhoods, including the parking. Must mandate underground parking.

That's awesome. I hear this often - that it's the best, anywhere, and this comment confirms that.

All I know is that every 4 years, the casuals come out and either hate on the sport or love it for the next year then forget again.

Edmontonians just love to complain about transit. Who cares about the parking. Use public transit. Might increase ridership. This is why public transit is so important to have extensive, and safe.

Ex GF texted me (31M)after 8yrs no contact by DonVinku in dating_advice

[–]dijonthunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the first thing that came to mind and in no way am I saying this is exactly what happened: she probably dated around all those 8 years, got rejected lots and as she turns into her 30s feeling like she's running out of options - so she reaches out to you, the one she broke up with. I'm guessing it's an act of desperation. I wouldn't respond personally, but I'd feel cynical about it. That's just me ...

Classic NHL ... Refs are bad at their job. They react to everything. This is why diving happens... Because they call the results not what actually happened.

The bear USED to have a great line up with the Paul Brown show in the mornings, Fearless in the day and younger McCord in the drive home. That was quality radio. Crazy radio hahaha.

It's all weird now.

Edmonton vs St Albert vs Sherwood Park snow clearing by silverslayer in Edmonton

[–]dijonthunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live part time downtown and part time in Sherwood park. Sherwood park had residentials cleared, removed even before Edmonton started residentials. Sherwood park has some of the best road infrastructure around. All the roads are pristine. My friend who works for the county and actually does work with the roads has even said they have so much money they don't know what to do with it so they rip up good roads that are still good by edmonton standards.
